pH stability of ophthalmic solutions.

2004

Background In this study, we evaluated the pH value of 17 ophthalmic solutions, and we investigated whether the pH of these solutions changed over time after the bottle was opened. Methods Fifteen bottles of each type of solution were chosen at random from different production lots. A 0.05-ml increment was taken from each bottle and was measured daily using a micropH 2002 Crison pH-meter over a period of 30 days. Results The results revealed differences between the pH values of the solutions; nine solutions presented pH values within ocular comfort range and eight solutions presented pH values between 3.5 and 6.4. Ten solutions presented non-statistically significant variations over time ( …

Platelet-rich fibrin for wound healing of palatal donor sites of free gingival grafts: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

2020

Made available in DSpace on 2021-06-25T10:22:28Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 Background: Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has been referred to as a second-generation platelet concentrate, associated with improvements on the healing of palatal wounds followed by FGG harvesting. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the complete wound epithelialization and postoperative pain when PRF was used in palatal wounds following free gingival graft (FGG) harvesting. Material and Methods: PubMed (Medline), EMBASE and Scopus were searched by two independent individuals up to and including March 2020 in order to identify controlled and randomized cont…

Web Personalization : The State of the Art and Future Avenues for Research and Practice

2016

Provide a review of current developments in web personalization.Show evolution toward more complex contextualized approaches.Identify research gaps in web personalization and in six specific research streams.Propose web personalization to be complemented with interpolated approaches. Although web personalization has been examined by earlier literature reviews, an updated analysis of recent advances in the field is needed. The authors extend prior reviews of web personalization by discussing current areas of interest, research gaps and future directions. A literature review of the top 20 marketing and information systems journals published during the period of 2005-2015 (May) shows active re…

Single snapshot RGB multispectral imaging at fixed wavelengths: proof of concept

2014

A concept of single snapshot multispectral imaging by standard RGB image sensors under spectrally-specific illumination comprising a fixed number of narrow spectral lines is discussed and experimentally validated. The limiting conditions, RGB band spectral crosstalk corrections and potential applications for parametric mapping of skin are regarded, along with the preliminary results of the proof-of-concept measurements.

Who says this is a modern disorder? The early history of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

2015

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a complex, heterogeneous and multifactorial neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Although the first clinical description of a constellation of symptoms highly resembling to what currently could be diagnosed as ADHD is generally attributed to George F Still in 1902, there are scattered but significant published historical medical, scientific and non-scientific reports, much prior to Still's lectures, of what is currently conceptualized as ADHD. The present report aimed at exploring the early history of ADHD, prior to the 20(th) century in the medical literature and in…

Stimulatory effects of DB-c-AMP and adrenaline on myocardial contraction and 45Ca exchange. Experiments at reduced calcium concentration and low freq…

1973

The effects of adrenaline (2.2×10−6 M) and cyclic N6-2′-O-dibutyryl-adenosine-3′,5′-monophosphate (DB-c-AMP; 10−3 M) on mechanical performance, 45Ca uptake and total tissue calcium concentration were investigated in electrically stimulated left auricles isolated from female rats weighing 180–220 g. The experiments were performed at reduced [Ca]e of 0.45 mM and at various frequencies of stimulation (0–120 beats/min). In the first series of experiments 45Ca incubation time was 5 min. Under these conditions DB-c-AMP as well as adrenaline enhanced contractile force to 300–450% of the control values at all frequencies tested (Fig.1). This increase in contractile force was accompanied by a signif…

Self-Concept, Body Image, and Perceived Health

2001

Studies of chronically ill adolescents have typically concentrated too much on social resources as factors that can buffer the effects of stress, while neglecting internal resources, such as self-concept and overall health (Cohen & Wills, 1985; Jamison, Lewis, & Burish, 1986). For a long time, studies on diabetic adolescents only focused on certain aspects of internal resources. Corresponding to studies carried out on adults with diabetes, much research concentrated on understanding the “diabetic personality” (Dunn & Turtle, 1981). It is surprising that so little consideration has been given to examining the role of the self-concept, because it is known that this internal resource is centra…

Osmolality of various viscoelastic substances: comparative study.

2000

Abstract Purpose To determine the osmolality of various viscoelastic substances. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, and Institute for Medical Device Testing, Memmingen, Germany. Methods The analysis was carried out according to the European Pharmacopoeia by means of a calibrated osmometer using the freezing-point depression method. Each syringe was analyzed as a duplicate analysis. Results Mean osmolalities (mOsmol/kg) of the sodium hyaluronate viscoelastic substances were Allervisc® 299; Allervisc® Plus 307; Amvisc® Plus 335; AMO Vitrax® 284; Biolon® 279; Dispasan® 311; Dispasan® Plus 314; Healon® 295; Healon GV® 312; Healon®5 322; HYA-Ophtal® 376; M…

Do human concepti have the potential to enter into diapause?

1999

Although there is no direct evidence as to whether human concepti have the potential to enter into diapause before implantation, the possibility that human concepti may be capable of following this developmental pathway if exposed to an appropriate environment cannot be ruled out. Direct evidence remains elusive because of the ethical restraints associated with research activities within this area of knowledge. If conceptus diapause has evolved in primates and persists at the present time despite its apparent limited or no adaptive advantage, artificial induction of diapause in humans may have clinical implications for increasing: (i) the viability of concepti after biopsy, freezing-thawing…
