Safety and immunomodulatory effects of three probiotic strains isolated from the feces of breast-fed infants in healthy adults: SETOPROB study.
2013
We previously described the isolation and characterization of three probiotic strains from the feces of exclusively breast-fed newborn infants: Lactobacillus paracasei CNCM I-4034, Bifidobacterium breve CNCM I-4035 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus CNCM I-4036. These strains were shown to adhere to intestinal mucus in vitro, to be sensitive to antibiotics and to resist biliary salts and low pH. In the present study, a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 100 healthy volunteers in three Spanish cities was carried out to evaluate the tolerance, safety, gut colonization and immunomodulatory effects of these three probiotics. Volunteers underwent a 15-day washout perio…
Selective downregulation of the MDR1 gene product in Caco-2 cells by stable transfection to prove its relevance in secretory drug transport.
2005
Considerable interest is focused on overcoming multidrug resistance (MDR) in cancer chemotherapy. The in vitro experiments to characterize P-glycoprotein's (P-gp) function and to decrease its effects have led to a variety of strategies such as addition of competitors or supplementation of the medium with oligonucleotides complementary to the 5'-end of the MDR1-mRNA. For the Caco-2 cell line, an in vitro model for absorption screening, expressing multiple transporters including P-gp, which pumps substances back into the apical solution, P-gp activity might mask other relevant transport proteins' activity. The objective of the present study was to construct a Caco-2 subline with reduced P-gp …
Un paisaje que cambia. Monumentos que fueron en tierras valencianas
2001
Life-history traits, abiotic environment and coexistence: The case of two cryptic rotifer species
2015
Abstract Trade-offs are important in life-history evolution and coexistence of competitors. However, how alternative life-history optima might promote competitor coexistence has received little attention. The rotifers Brachionus plicatilis and Brachionus manjavacas are two cryptic species with a considerable ecological overlap in relation to biotic factors. These species often co-occur in temporal brackish ponds characterised by environmental fluctuations. In these rotifers, sexual reproduction results in diapausing stages, which are able to survive through adverse conditions but constrain current population growth. In the present work, the differential responses of both cryptic rotifer spe…
A radiometric and petrographic approach to risk assessment at Alte Madonie Mounts region (Sicily, Italy)
2013
The main goal of this work was to assess the radiological hazard at Alte Madonie Mounts region (north-central Sicily, Italy) in response to rumours of an increase in the incidence of cancer in this area. A correlation between the natural radionuclide contents and the petrographic features of the soil and rock samples was also evaluated. A total of 41 samples of selected soils and rocks were collected, powdered, dried and sealed in 'Marinelli' beakers for 20 d prior to measurement to ensure that a radioactive equilibrium between (226)Ra and (214)Bi had been reached. A gamma-ray spectrometer was used to quantify the radioactivity concentrations. To determine (238)U and (232)Th activities, the…
Fontane e acquedotti nella Sicilia tra XV e XVII secolo
2014
Between XV and XVII century, the Sicilian cities deal with impressive works of modernization, trough the construction of new conducts and aqueducts. The most eloquent signsof this activity are the precious fountains, built in Messina and Palermo, with a clear role of civic propaganda. In addition to these works, the documents tell, with reference to several cities of the island, of a lasting and dramatic series of quarrels that reveal the political and economic value of the water’s domain. Le città siciliane tra XV e XVII affrontarono una imponente opera di modernizzazione attraverso la costruzione di nuove condutture idriche e di acquedotti. La prova più evidente di questa attività so le p…
Machine learning of reverse transcription signatures of variegated polymerases allows mapping and discrimination of methylated purines in limited tra…
2020
AbstractReverse transcription (RT) of RNA templates containing RNA modifications leads to synthesis of cDNA containing information on the modification in the form of misincorporation, arrest, or nucleotide skipping events. A compilation of such events from multiple cDNAs represents an RT-signature that is typical for a given modification, but, as we show here, depends also on the reverse transcriptase enzyme. A comparison of 13 different enzymes revealed a range of RT-signatures, with individual enzymes exhibiting average arrest rates between 20 and 75%, as well as average misincorporation rates between 30 and 75% in the read-through cDNA. Using RT-signatures from individual enzymes to trai…
Production of Adenosine by Ectonucleotidases: A Key Factor in Tumor Immunoescape
2012
It is now well known that tumor immunosurveillance contributes to the control of cancer growth. Many mechanisms can be used by cancer cells to avoid the antitumor immune response. One such mechanism relies on the capacity of cancer cells or more generally of the tumor microenvironment to generate adenosine, a major molecule involved in antitumor T cell response suppression. Adenosine is generated by the dephosphorylation of extracellular ATP released by dying tumor cells. The conversion of ATP into adenosine is mediated by ectonucleotidase molecules, namely, CD73 and CD39. These molecules are frequently expressed in the tumor bed by a wide range of cells including tumor cells, regulatory T …
The influence of food competition and host specificity on the transmission of Triaenophorus crassus (Cestoda) and Cystidicola farionis (Nematoda) to …
2000
Abstract As a superior competitor for planktonic food, vendace ( Coregonus albula ), when abundant, is expected to displace whitefish ( Coregonus lavaretus ) from feeding on plankton and to force it to rely more on benthic food. The predicted result would be a reduced abundance of the copepod-transmitted cestode Triaenophorus crassus in whitefish, but an increase in the abundance of the nematode Cystidicola farionis transmitted via benthic amphipods. We studied the occurrence of both parasites in whitefish during 1991–1996 in three interconnected areas at Lake Saimaa, Finland, where the densities of the vendace stocks varied due to natural fluctuation in year-class strengths. In accordance …
Signal Characteristics of EMG at Different Levels of Muscle Tension
1976
Electromyographic activity of m. rectus femoris at submaximal and maximal voluntary contractions was quantified by conventional integration technique and also be a more "qualitative" procedure of automated motor unit averaging and frequency spectrum analysis. By relating the EMG parameters to produced muscle tension it was observed that the integrated EMG increased in a slightly nonlinear fashion with the increase in muscle force. The other EMG variables also showed clear changes as a function of muscle tension. The averaged motor unit potential (AMUP) and its specific parameters (number of spikes, amplitude, rise time and amplitude-rise time ratio) showed such changes with muscle tension t…
