Treatment Initiation in Therapy-Naive COPD Patients: An Analysis of the German Real-Life Daccord Register
2020
IκB kinase-driven nuclear factor-κB activation in patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
2011
Background Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) is a transcriptional factor of different inflammatory patterns involved in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that is tightly controlled by IκB kinase (IKK) complex. Objective We investigated the dysregulation of IKK-driven NF-κB activation in patients with asthma and COPD. Methods We assessed IKKα and IKKβ expression and activation, their regulation by glucocorticosteroids, and their involvement in IL-8 synthesis in PBMCs isolated from asthmatic patients, healthy smokers (HSs), patients with COPD, and control subjects. PBMCs from control subjects were stimulated with TNF-α and cigarette smoke extract in the presence or absence of fl…
Prevalence and 30-Day Mortality in Hospitalized Patients With Covid-19 and Prior Lung Diseases.
2021
Patients with pre-existing respiratory diseases in the setting of COVID-19 may have a greater risk of severe complications and even death.A retrospective, multicenter, cohort study with 5847 COVID-19 patients admitted to hospitals. Patients were separated in two groups, with/without previous lung disease. Evaluation of factors associated with survival and secondary composite end-point such as ICU admission and respiratory support, were explored.1,271 patients (22%) had a previous lung disease, mostly COPD. All-cause mortality occurred in 376 patients with lung disease (29.5%) and in 819 patients without (17.9%) (Previous lung disease is a risk factor for mortality in patients with COVID-19.…
Māsas un pacienta sadarbības hroniskas obstraktīvas plaušu slimības gadījumā
2021
Smoking cessation opportunities in severe mental illness (tobacco intensive motivational and estimate risk — TIMER—): study protocol for a randomized…
2019
There is an increased risk of premature death in people with severe mental illness (SMI). Respiratory disorders and cardiovascular disease are leading causes of increased mortality rates in these patients, and tobacco consumption remains the most preventable risk factor involved. Developing new tools to motivate patients towards cessation of smoking is a high priority. Information on the motivational value of giving the lung age and prevention opportunities is unknown in this high-risk population. In the context of community care, screening and early detection of lung damage could potentially be used, together with mobile technology, in order to produce a prevention message, which may provi…
MUC1-CT mediates corticosteroid responses in COPD
2016
Background: Corticosteroid resistance is an acquired condition in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients and a challenge to develop new anti-inflammatory therapies. In previous reports we showed that cytoplasmic tail of the membrain tethered mucin 1 (MUC1-CT) interacts with glucocorticoid receptor (GR) mediating corticosteroid anti-inflammatory efficacy. Objectives: To analyze the role of MUC1-CT as a key marker of corticosteroid efficacy in COPD Methods: The expression of MUC1-CT and the anti-inflammatory role of dexamethasone were evaluated in neutrophils and bronchial epithelial cells from healthy and COPD patients. Anti-inflammatory effects of dexamethasone and glucocorti…
Novel in vitro and in vivo data on the cellular localization of Hsp10 in smokers affected by COPD and in lung-derived cell lines exposed to cigarette…
2013
Cigarette smoke is a potent stressor for the respiratory system, contributing to pathogenesis, for instance in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but its effects on the expression, function, and cellular localization of mitochondrial chaperonins are still largely unknown. We studied in vivo (airways biopsies) the localization of Hsp10 and Hsp60 in patients (smokers and non-smokers) affected by mild-moderate COPD, and characterized the effects of non-lethal doses of cigarette smoke extract (CSE) on the expression of these molecules in two human cell lines: lung fibroblasts (HFL-1) and bronchial epithelial (16HBE). We applied various in vitro methods: immunohistochemistry (IHC), su…
