Occult Hepatitis B Infection in the Immigrant Population of Sicily, Italy.

2012

In Italy, about 7 % of the resident population is represented by immigrants originating from geographic regions at high endemicity for hepatitis B virus infection. This study aims to assess the prevalence of occult HBV infection (OBI) including the identification of HBV-genotypes in a population of immigrants serologically negative for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). Between May 2006 and May 2010, 339 immigrants were tested for markers of HBV, hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections. HBV-DNA was tested by using nested-PCR assays on three different genetic region. HBV-DNA was detected in plasma samples of 11/339 (3.2 %) patients. Most of them had no ser…

Epstein Barr Virus detection and latent membrane protein 1 in oral hairy leukoplakia in HIV+ Venezuelan patients

2008

Purpose: To determine the prevalence of Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) in oral hairy leukoplakia lesions (OHL) in HIV+ Venezuelan patients. Material and Method: In this case study, we evaluated 21 HIV+ adult patients with clinically present OHL lesions, 11 who were undergoing antiretroviral therapy, 10 who were not undergoing therapy and 10 HIV-negative adult patients with hyperkeratotic oral mucosal lesions. All of the subjects were assessed at the Infectious Disease Center, Faculty of Dentistry, Central University of Venezuela, and were clinically examined to detect oral mucosal lesions with the confirmed histopathologic diagnosis. Nested-PCR was used to determine the EBV infection and the late…

Epirubicin, Folinic Acid, Fluorouracil, and Etoposide in the Treatment of Advanced Gastric Cancer

1999

In the authors' previous experience, the addition of epidoxorubicin to the FA-FU regimen obtained a better response rate than that of FA-FU alone in patients with advanced gastric cancer. Furthermore, considering the good efficacy and mild toxicity observed with the addition of etoposide to the FA-FU combination in the German study, the authors conducted a trial to explore the efficacy and tolerability of the ELFE regimen (epirubicin, folinic acid, fluorouracil, and etoposide) in previously untreated advanced gastric cancer patients. Of the 55 patients entered, 51 were evaluable for efficacy. Four complete responses (8%) and 21 partial responses (41%) were observed, with an overall response…

Phase II Study of the Etoposide, Leucovorin and Fluorouracil Combination for Patients with Advanced Gastric Cancer Unsuitable for Aggressive Chemothe…

1995

Many patients with advanced gastric cancer cannot be treated with intensive chemotherapy. In an attempt to provide a feasible regimen for such patients, the combination of etoposide, leucovorin and fluorouracil (ELF) has been developed with promising results. The present study involved 42 patients with advanced gastric cancer who where unsuitable for cisplatin- or anthracycline-containing regimens because of their age (24 patients over 65 years), poor performance status (12) or the presence of concomitant illness (6). The treatment consisted of etoposide 120 mg/m2 i.v., 1-leucovorin 150 mg/m2 i.v. and fluorouracil 500 mg/m2 i.v. for 3 consecutive days every 3 weeks. Among the 41 evaluable p…

Extra-Adrenal Adult Neuroblastoma With Aberrant Germ Cell Marker Expression: Maturation After Chemotherapy as an Important Clue to a Challenging Diag…

2019

Adult neuroblastoma is an extremely infrequent neoplasm, usually occurring in the adrenal medulla or in the paraspinal sympathetic ganglia, as its childhood counterpart. We report a very unusual case of a Schwannian stroma-poor adult neuroblastoma of inguinal location, showing aberrant expression of germ cell markers: SALL4 and OCT4. This aberrant marker expression, the unusual positivity for NKX2.2 and the very scattered (instead of diffuse strong) PHOX2B expression, complicated the initial diagnosis. In this case, the posttreatment histological evaluation revealed the neuroblastic nature of the lesion. Neuroblastoma maturation after treatment is an unusual finding in adults, and in this …

A validation study of an Italian version of the ID Migraine: preliminary results

2005

Migraine is a highly prevalent and disabling disease that is substantially undiagnosed in primary care. Recently, the ID Migraine, a self–administered questionnaire, was shown to be a valid and reliable screener for migraine in primary care in the USA. To validate an Italian version of the ID Migraine, we planned a multicentric study, evaluating at least 220 patients affected by various form of headache. The responses to the questionnaire were compared with the diagnosis of headache made by a headache specialist blind to the result of the questionnaire. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values for migraine were calculated. The statistical analysis on 140 patient…

Detection of human immunodeficiency virus-1 DNA, RNA and antibody, and occult blood in inactivated saliva: Availability of the filter paper disk meth…

1996

Eighty three samples of saliva were collected from 60 subjects who were asymptomatic carriers of AIDS related complex (ARC) and AIDS. They included hemophiliacs, homosexuals and heterosexuals. Occult blood, human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) antibody and DNA were assayed after heat treatment at 56 degrees C by strip method, particle agglutination and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), respectively. HIV-1 RNA was assayed by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR after heat treatment at 56 degrees C or 90 degrees C, or after application to filter paper disks with drying and heat treatment at 90 degrees C. Positive results were found in 53% (occult blood), 73% (HIV-1 antibody), 23% (HIV-1 DNA, 56 de…

Conceptual proposition selection and the LIFG: neuropsychological evidence from a focal frontal group.

2010

Much debate surrounds the role of the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG). Evidence from lesion and neuroimaging studies suggests the LIFG supports a selection mechanism used in single word generation. Single case studies of dynamic aphasic patients with LIFG damage concur with this and extend the finding to selection of sentences at the conceptual preparation stage of language generation. A neuropsychological group with unselected focal frontal and non-frontal lesions is assessed on a sentence generation task that varied the number of possible conceptual propositions available for selection. Frontal patients with LIFG damage when compared to Frontal patients without LIFG damage and Posterio…

Changes in At-Risk Behavior for HIV Infection among HIV-Positive Persons in Italy

2009

Many HIV-positive persons reportedly continue to engage in at-risk behavior. We compared the sexual and drug-using practices of HIV-positive persons before and after the diagnosis of HIV infection to determine whether their behavior had changed. To this end, in 2006, we conducted a cross-sectional study involving clinical centers in five Italian cities. Each center was asked to enroll 100 persons aged 18 years or older who had a diagnosis of HIV infection that dated back at least 2 years. Data were collected with a specifically designed questionnaire, administered during a structured interview. The McNemar chi2 test was used to compare the data before and after the diagnosis. A total of 497…

Periodontal status of HIV-positive patients

2008

Objective: To assess the periodontal status of HIV positive individuals and to compare it with age-and gendermatched controls.Materials and Methods: The cross-sectional study comprised fifty-two HIV positive individuals and fifty-two controls. OHI-S and PI were recorded by a single pre-trained and pre-calibrated examiner. Results: Based on antiretroviral therapy use, mean OHI-S was higher among HIV positive females undergoing therapy. A significant gender difference was observed in the PI score among those on antiretroviral therapy, with females having a lower score (p = 0.04). Also, significant gender difference was observed in the mean PI score among HIV positive individuals, with males ha…
