DNA oxidation products determined with repair endonucleases in mammalian cells: Types, basal levels and influence of cell proliferation

Purified repair endonucleases such as Fpg protein, endonuclease III and IV allow a very sensitive quantification of various types of oxidative DNA modifications in mammalian cells. By means of these assays, the numbers of base modifications sensitive to Fpg protein, which include 8-hydroxyguanine (8-oxoG), were determined to be less than 0.3 per 10(6) bp in several types of untreated cultured mammalian cells and human lymphocytes and less than 10 per 10(6) bp in mitochondrial DNA from rat and porcine liver. Abstract The organotin(IV) compounds Me2SnCl2(dbtp)(1), Me2SnCl2(dbtp)2 (2), Et2SnCl2(dbtp) (3), Et2SnCl2(dbtp)2 (4), Et2SnCl2(dptp) (5), nBu2SnCl2(dbtp)2 (6), nBu2SnCl2(dptp) (7), Ph2SnCl2(dbtp) (8), Ph2SnCl2(EtOH)2(dptp)2 (9), where dbtp = 5,7-di-tert-butyl-1,2,4-triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine and dptp = 5,7-diphenyl-1,2,4-triazolo [1,5-a]pyrimidine, have been tested by MTT for their cytotoxic activity on three tumor cell lines, HepG2 (human hepatocellular carcinoma), HeLa (human cervix adenocarcinoma) and MCF-7 (human breast cancer). Acridine orange in a pumpkin-shaped macrocycle: Beyond solvent effects in the UV–visible spectra simulation of dyes

Abstract We present simulation of the UV–visible spectra of acridine orange, a widely used photosensitizer for in vivo studies due to its highly environment-dependent spectroscopic properties. This dye has been investigated both in its protonated and neutral forms, either isolated or embedded in a pumpkin-shaped macromolecular cycle (cucurbit-7-uril), using time-dependent density functional theory techniques. Micellization properties of cardanol as a renewable co-surfactant

With the aim to improve the features of surfactant solutions in terms of sustainability and renewability we propose the use of hydrogenated natural and sustainable plant-derived cardanol as an additive to com- mercial surfactants. In the present study we demonstrated that its addition, in amounts as high as 10%, to commercial surfactants of different charge does not significantly affect surfactant properties. This sector, throughout the ages, has been characterized by a decrease of the invested areas and by a reduction of the fresh product’s demand; in the meantime, the competitiveness of the new producer countries is increased for a better commercial organization and for lower production costs. Impairment of leaf hydraulics in young plants of Citrus aurantium (sour orange) infected by Phoma tracheiphila.

Phoma trachephila (Petri) Kantschaveli et Gikachvili causes dieback of several Citrus species. The impact of this fungus on leaf hydraulics was studied in Citrus aurantium L. (sour orange) with the aim of identifying the primary mechanism of damage to leaves. Leaves inoculated with a conidial suspension were measured for conductance to water vapor (gL) and specific hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) every 3 days after inoculation. The earliest symptom of infection consisted of vein chlorosis. Functional vein density (FVD) was monitored and microscopic observations were made of major vein conduits. The potential impacts of herbicide utilization compel producers to use new methods of weed control. The problem of how to reduce the amount of herbicide and yet maintain crop production has stimulated many researchers to study selective herbicide application.
