How partnerships end in guillemots Uria aalge : chance events, adaptive change, or forced divorce?

Divorce in socially monogamous species can result from different mechanisms, for example, chance events, active desertion of the partner, or the intrusion of a third individual ousting the partner. We compared the predictions associated with such mechanisms with data from common guillemots (Uria aalge) breeding on the Isle of May, Scotland. The data cover the years 1982--2005 and show a yearly divorce rate of 10.2%. In most divorces (86%), one of the original partners moved to another breeding site, whereas the other bird stayed and bred with a new partner. Rocking of rigid block on nonlinear flexible foundation

Abstract The two prime models used currently to describe rocking of rigid bodies, the Housner’s model and the Winkler foundation model, can capture some of the salient features of the physics of this important problem. These two models involve either null or linear interaction between the block and the foundation. MARL-Ped+Hitmap: Towards Improving Agent-Based Simulations with Distributed Arrays

Multi-agent systems allow the modelling of complex, heterogeneous, and distributed systems in a realistic way. MARL-Ped is a multi-agent system tool, based on the MPI standard, for the simulation of different scenarios of pedestrians who autonomously learn the best behavior by Reinforcement Learning. Recent studies show that the handling of thin wafers in the photovoltaic industry can lead to unacceptable yields due to cell scratching and breaking. This paper presents the concept and design of a novel modular conveyor that is intended for handling planar fragile objects at a high speed without contact. Each element of the conveyor is a square block that is able to generate tilted air jets that lift and push the object in a single direction. Abstract In the paper, a numerical and experimental study was carried out to highlight the effect of the distance d between the weld seam and the reinforcement on the residual stress distribution in Friction Stir Welded AA6082-T6 structures. The phenomenon of so-called break-away forces, as maximal actuation forces at which a sticking system begins to slide and thus passes over to a steady (macro) motion, is well known from engineering practice but still less understood in its cause-effect relationship.
