Numerical simulation of fibre growth in antitaxial strain fringes

A two-dimensional computer model (‘Fringe Growth’) is used to simulate the incremental growth of crystal fibres in undeformed antitaxial strain fringes. The user can define the shape of a core-object (e.g. a pyrite crystal), the growth velocity and anisotropy of growing crystals, the rotation of fringes and core-object with respect to a horizontal datum and with respect to each other, and the opening velocity of fringes. Growth is simulated by movement of nodes connecting line segments that define the grain boundaries. Tetragonal tungsten bronze compounds: relaxor versus mixed ferroelectric-dipole glass behavior.

We demonstrate that recent experimental data (E. Castel et al J.Phys. Cond. Mat. {\bf 21} (2009), 452201) on tungsten bronze compound (TBC) Ba$_2$Pr$_x$Nd$_{1-x}$FeNb$_4$O$_{15}$ can be well explained in our model predicting a crossover from ferroelectric ($x=0$) to orientational (dipole) glass ($x=1$), rather then relaxor, behavior. We show, that since a "classical" perovskite relaxor like Pb(Mn$_{1/3}$ Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$ is never a ferroelectric, the presence of ferroelectric hysteresis loops in TBC shows that this substance actually transits from ferroelectric to orientational glass phase with $x$ growth. Abstract The nature of fabric accumulation in high strain zones such as ductile shear zones depends on the nature and orientation of flow eigenvectors or apophyses. Some flow apophyses can act as ‘attractors’ of material lines or principal finite strain axes. This paper explains the nature of such attractors and discusses their significance and orientation in different monoclinic flow types. In ductile shear zones, strain values are high enough to show the effect of attractors in deformed rocks clearly. Solid solutions of ${\mathrm{Ar}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$(${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$${)}_{\mathit{x}}$ have been investigated by x-ray powder diffraction in the range 0.5x1.0, 8T60 K, and under hydrostatic pressures up to 2200 bars. The structural hcp-cubic (Pa3) phase transition is identified as a martensitic transformation with a wide transformation hysteresis. For x0.8 and T30 K the solid solutions show the orientational glass state, which is characterized by a superposition of inhomogeneous and homogeneous lattice strains. Simulation of Models for Isotropic and Anisotropic Orientational Glasses

“Orientational glass” behavior is found when molecular crystals are randomly diluted, and quadrupole moments get frozen by random alignment of the molecules, similar to “spin glass” behavior of randomly diluted magnets. Monte Carlo simulation of lattice models where quadrupole moments interact with nearest neighbor Gaussian coupling is a unique tool to study this behavior. The time-dependent glass order parameter exhibits anomalously slow relaxation, compatible with the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) stretched exponential function. X-ray-absorption fine-structure study of ZnSexTe1−x alloys

X-ray-absorption fine-structure experiments at different temperatures in ZnSexTe1−x (x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.55, 0.81, 0.93, 0.99, and 1.0) have been performed in order to obtain information about the structural relaxation and disorder effects occurring in the alloys. First and second neighbor distance distributions have been characterized at the Se and Zn K edges, using multiple-edge and multiple-scattering data analysis. The first neighbor distance distribution was found to be bimodal. The static disorder associated with the Zn–Te distance variance did not depend appreciably on composition. A differentiation of short-latency (alpha) and long-latency (delayed) classically conditioned behavioral and evoked neural (hippocampal) responses was attempted. Further, facilitation and retardation of these responses were studied in an experimental design in which 10 paired conditioning sessions either preceded (CC-CO group) or followed (CO-CC group) 10 randomly unpaired presentations of conditioned stimuli (CS) and unconditioned stimuli (UCS). Frank H. Knight on social values in economic consumption: an archival note

We reproduce an unpublished address on “Social Values in Economic Consumption” which Knight prepared for a SSRC Conference in June 1931. This material sheds new light on Knight in two respects. First, anticipating what is known as the relative income hypothesis, Knight indicated that a general increase in income, not only leaves the individual’s relative position in society unaltered but makes her/his situation worse off due to the peculiar characteristics of the market for “personal services.” Second, this address provides further evidence of how, in spite of some substantial methodological differences, Knight’s research interests converged with those of the institutionalists.
