Computer-assisted orientation and drawing of archaeological pottery.

2018

Archaeologists spend considerable time orienting and drawing ceramic fragments by hand for documentation, to infer their manufacture, the nature of the discovery site and its chronology, and to develop hypotheses about commercial and cultural exchanges, social organisation, resource exploitation, and taphonomic processes. This study presents a survey of existing solutions to the time-consuming problem of orienting and drawing pottery fragments. Orientation is based on the 3D geometry of pottery models, which can now be acquired in minutes with low-cost 3D scanners. Several methods are presented: they are based on normal vectors, or circle fittings, or profile fittings. All these methods see…

An Overview on Solar Shading Systems for Buildings

2014

Abstract In recent years, different types of solar shading devices have been proposed, depending on building orientation, location, window characteristics, etc. They can contribute to improve or worsen building thermal and lighting performances both from an energy and comfort point of view. The present paper reports a critical analysis of some studies that investigate shading devices’ effects on building thermal and/or lighting performances. This article points out the difficulty in comparing the different results given the lack of uniformity between the studies, since they analysed buildings with different characteristics, locations and using various indices. Therefore a protocol to carry …

Low-cost underwater navigation systems by multi-pressure measurements and AHRS data

2017

This paper deals with accurate navigation for underwater remotely operated vehicles. A feasibility study for a multi-pressure device to be mounted on an ROV is presented. The device can provide accurate estimates of a ROV orientation and angular speed. It is based on the well-known total pressure principle, also used in a Pitot tube, and allows reconstruction of static and dynamic pressures, which in turn provide good estimates of the ROV's orientation and rotational speed, respectively. An appealing feature of the proposed device is its ability to provide accurate estimates even for low-speed movements.

Head and Body Coordination during Locomotion and Complex Movements

1994

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses theory in which it is argued that during complex movements, the head is stabilized intermittently under the control of gaze, and that this stabilization allows the head to serve as an inertial guidance platform for the control of multilimb movement. The otolithic organs, sacculus and utriculus, are inertial detectors of linear acceleration of the head in the plane of their macula. It is well established that in normal gravity conditions, although the perceived gravitational vertical deviates from the objective vertical by a few degrees, gravitational reference is used not only for posture but also for perceptual tasks that involve orientation in spac…

A model of goal dynamics in technology-based organizations

2011

The purpose of the present work is to build a suitable system dynamics model for goal dynamics in organizations, as proposed by Barlas and Yasarcan (2008). The proposed model does not bear any ambition of being exhaustive: the main objective of this paper is to propose a model of goal dynamics in which Goal Setting, Management by Objectives and Training are viewed as human resource practices able to enhance workers' goal commitment, and therefore, improve organizational performance. In the first part of this paper, an analysis of the Goal Setting Theory and the role of goal setting practices, in bettering worker's performance, are stressed. In the second part, a case-study, the causal loop …

Economic evaluation of PV system for EV charging stations: Comparison between matching maximum orientation and storage system employment

2016

This article addresses the problem of the choice of a generation system to be implemented to reduce the impact of charging electric vehicles at University. Based on the behaviour of the student population, it is identified the electrical load. Two possible solutions are evaluated in order to manage the peak load: an orientation of the panels in order to increase the power at defined time and the use of storage system. The main strength and weakness points of two systems are investigated by taking into account the Levelized Cost of Energy.

Three dimensional reconstruction of intracoronary ultrasound images: roadmapping with simultaneously digitised coronary angiograms

2002

Three dimensional reconstruction of intracoronary ultrasound images offers a better appreciation of the axial relationship of vessel features and permits volumetric assessment, both of which depend critically on the spatial accuracy of the technique. This in turn is dependent on precise longitudinal orientation of the transducer in the vessel. The authors have developed a system which utilises simultaneously digitised fluoroscopic tracking of the radio-opaque transducer to orient the corresponding 2D ICUS images. This system may offer improved spatial accuracy of the three dimensional reconstruction and a means of precise identification of the 2D ICUS image which corresponds with a selected…

Error and Uncertainty Analysis of Non-Uniform Residual Stress Evaluation by Using the Ring-Core Method

2016

Like other mechanical methods used for the residual stress evaluation on a generic structural component, the Ring-Core Method (RCM) is potentially subjected to various error sources that in some particular experimental conditions can lead to significant errors and/or uncertainties on the computed residual stresses. The accuracy of the residual stresses computed by the RCM can be improved by a proper error analysis that allows the user to correct the systematic errors, as well as to evaluate the remaining stress uncertainty due to the random errors. Therefore, in order to give a contribution to the accuracy of the RCM, in the present work the list of the main error sources is presented and t…

Drosophila-inspired visual orientation model on the Eye-Ris platform: Experiments on a roving robot

2011

Behavioral experiments on fruit flies had shown that they are attracted by near objects and they prefer front-to-back motion. In this paper a visual orientation model is implemented on the Eye-Ris vision system and tested using a roving platform. Robotic experiments are used to collect statistical data regarding the system behaviour: followed trajectories, dwelling time, distribution of gaze direction and others strictly resembling the biological experimental setup on the flies. The statistical analysis has been performed in different scenarios where the robot faces with different object distribution in the arena. The acquired data has been used to validate the proposed model making a compa…

Shape and dimensional accuracy in Single Point Incremental Forming: State of the art and future trends

2007

Abstract The paper is aimed to discuss some relevant issues concerning an innovative sheet metal forming technology, namely Single Point Incremental Forming. The advantages of this technology are addressed, including its capability to provide effective answers to some impellent industrial requirements: process flexibility, strong customer orientation, production of highly differentiated goods at low industrial costs. As well some relevant drawbacks are highlighted, mainly as concerns the level of accuracy permitted by the process. A wide recognition of the research efforts in this field is presented, taking into account some general considerations on the difference sources of shape and dime…
