Interactive simulation of one-dimensional flexible parts

2006

Computer simulations play an ever growing role for the development of automotive products. Assembly simulation, as well as many other processes, are used systematically even before the first physical prototype of a vehicle is built in order to check whether particular components can be assembled easily or whether another part is in the way. Usually, this kind of simulation is limited to rigid bodies. However, a vehicle contains a multitude of flexible parts of various types: cables, hoses, carpets, seat surfaces, insulations, weatherstrips... Since most of the problems using these simulations concern one-dimensional components and since an intuitive tool for cable routing is still needed, w…

AUTOMATIC DETECTION OF SMALL SPHERICAL LESIONS USING MULTISCALE APPROACH IN 3D MEDICAL IMAGES

2013

International audience; Automated detection of small, low level shapes such as circular/spherical objects in images is a challenging computer vision problem. For many applications, especially microbleed detection in Alzheimer's disease, an automatic pre-screening scheme is required to identify potential seeds with high sensitivity and reasonable specificity. A new method is proposed to detect spherical objects in 3D medical images within the multi-scale Laplacian of Gaussian framework. The major contributions are (1) breaking down 3D sphere detection into 1D line profile detection along each coordinate dimension, (2) identifying center of structures by normalizing the line response profile …

Educational experiences and perceptions of occupational hierarchies: The case of the Norwegian working class

2019

In this article we present the experiences of members of the Norwegian working class in the educational system and show that the findings contradict established theories in the sociology of education in a way that calls for a re-examination of the function of societal hierarchies in such studies. Secondly, we report how working-class individuals comprehend society’s valuation of their work and whether these experiences affect their own judgments and evaluations of work. The findings reveal an enlightened working class when it comes to conventional occupational hierarchies, but also show that members of the working class classify status in their own, distinctive way. The egalitarian cultural…

Jet launching from binary black hole-neutron star mergers: Dependence on black hole spin, binary mass ratio and magnetic field orientation

2018

Black hole-neutron star (BHNS) mergers are one of the most promising targets for multimessenger astronomy. Using general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of BHNS undergoing merger we showed that a magnetically--driven jet can be launched by the remnant if the NS is endowed with a dipole B field extending from the interior into the exterior as in a radio pulsar. These self-consistent studies considered a BHNS system with mass ratio $q=3:1$, BH spin $a/M_{BH}=0.75$ aligned with the total orbital angular momentum (OAM), and a NS that is irrotational, threaded by an aligned B field, and modeled by an $\Gamma$--law equation of state with $\Gamma=2$. Here, as a crucial step in establi…

WISDOM IN HIGHER EDUCATION

2015

In higher education, much attention is being directed at the quality of the student experience. It is up to educators to begin to answer the sophisticated questions about the quality of undergraduate education, conceptualized in its broadest form by the institutions’ primary stakeholders. In this current context, the time is nigh for career services to maximize its contribution to the creation of powerful learning environments and take a greater role in shaping this discussion. This guiding model will benefit students, employers, and institutions alike. Wisdom is a construct of six interacting dimensions: 1) self-knowledge, 2) understanding of others, 3) judgment, 4) life knowledge, 5) life…

Testing the Trust Game with undergraduates: An experiment with wealth heterogeneity

2017

Ponència presentada a 3rd International Conference on Higher Education Advances, HEAd’17, Universitat Politècnica de València, València, 2017 Trust, reciprocity and a fair distribution of resources are cruzial in the sustainability of any economic system. As a matter of fact, those are values that should be promoted among the new generations, especially among university students enrolled in degrees that are related to economics. Under this context, we are interested in enhancing criticism and active reflection among undergraduates with respect to social values. With such a goal in mind, we designed a two step classroom task that includes playing the Trust Game (TG) in the first place and, s…

Instructional factors and over-education of university graduates

2015

The aim of this work is to test the role of the level of generic competences developed during University studies and the professional and practice orientation of instruction (PPOI) in the prediction of graduates’ initial vertical fit and vertical fit change over an 8-year period. The study sample comprised 334 graduates who finished their degrees two years before they were interviewed for the first time (Time 1). Four and eight years later they were interviewed again (Times 2 and 3, respectively). All of them had employment at Time 1, 2 and 3. Hypotheses were tested by means of Latent Growth Curve Analyses. Contrary to our expectations only PPOI was positive and significantly related to gra…

Improving point matching on multimodal images using distance and orientation automatic filtering

2016

International audience; Speed Up Robust Features SURF is one of the most popular and efficient methods used for image registration task. In order to achieve a correct registration, a good matching of feature point is required. However in the case of multimodal images, the high and non-linear intensity changes between different modalities led to many outliers (mismatching of detected points) and consequently a fail in the registration. Therefore, in this paper we introduce an efficient method devoted to the detection and removal of such outlier. It's based on an automatic filtering of outliers on both distance and orientation between features points. We tested our proposed method on a set of…

Reconstruction of 3D grain boundaries from rock thin sections, using an advanced polarised-light microscopy method

2017

Grain boundaries play a significant role in materials by initiating reactions and collecting impurities. Here we present FAGO (Fabric Analyser Grain boundary recOnstruction), a first step towards the automatic determination of three-dimensional (3D) grain boundary geometry using polarised light. The trace of the grain boundaries from 2D rock thin sections are determined primarily from data acquired using an automatic fabric analyser microscope and the FAME software (fabric analyser-based microstructure evaluation; Peternell and colleagues and Hammes and Peternell). Based on the Fabric Analyser G50's unique arrangement of nine differently oriented light sources the retardation can be determi…
