Logic appears, on the one side, as having the metaphysical pretensions of universality and wholeness and, on the other side, as having local efficiency in computers' concrete world. ‘I don’t know the answer to that question’: a corpus-assisted discourse analysis of White House Press Briefings

White House Press Briefings, daily meetings with the press held by the White House Press Secretary, are the main information conduit for the White House (Kumar 2007). They are considered a “political chess game” where the Press Secretary and the press face a “wrestling match” (Partington 2006: 16). Our analysis is carried out on a corpus comprising all the Press Briefings across three presidencies from Clinton to Obama. The additional mark-up includes information about individual speakers and their role, allowing us to compare different discourse strategies adopted by the participants in the briefings at different points in time. Photokinetic examination of (Z,E,E)-4,4′-distyrylazobenzene

Abstract 4,4′-Distyrylazobenzenes demonstrate a photokinetic equilibrium and a superimposed thermal backward reaction in which the absorption coefficient of one of the partners in the equilibrium is principally unknown. Using the dependence of the photostationary state on the irradiation intensity, the photochemical quantum yields ϕ 1 A and ϕ 2 B were determined, as well as the thermal rate constant k , as a function of the irradiation and observation wavelengths. Experimental difficulties and the wavelength dependence of ϕ 1 A and ϕ 2 B are discussed.

Physical Cross Links in Amorphous PET, Influence of Cooling Rate and Ageing

A Continuous Cooling Transformation (CCT) procedure can be used to distinguish the initial “state” of the amorphous PET samples produced upon solidification from the melt at different cooling rates. The material frozen at this stage behaves as a rubber when brought above the Tg due to the onset of physical cross links. The rubber is not a stable network, however, since physical cross links may eventually dissolve. Their size distribution, and possibly their number, depend on cooling rate and ageing. Photoelectrochemical study of passive films on stainless steel in neutral solutions

Abstract Passive films formed on AISI 304 stainless steel in neutral solutions are studied using photoelectrochemical technique. Photocurrents were investigated as a function of the wavelength of the incident light, the electrode potential and the time. The results of the measurements together with capacity measurements indicate that the passive film on AISI 304 shows characteristics of a highly doped amorphous or highly disordered n-type semiconductor. The potential dependence of the optical gap values and of the photocurrent transients can be interpreted assuming that the passive film is an iron-chromium oxide solid solution.

In Situ Heating TEM Study of Onion-like WS2 and MoS2 Nanostructures Obtained via MOCVD

We report on the in situ heating transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study of WS2 and MoS2 nanoparticles obtained from metal–organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The general behavior of MoS2 and WS2 is similar: Round, amorphous particles in the pristine sample transform to hollow, onion-like particles upon annealing. A second type of particle with straight layers exhibits only minor changes. A significant difference between both compounds could be demonstrated in their crystallization behavior. The results of the in situ heating experiments are compared to those obtained from an ex situ annealing process under Ar.
