Morphological characteristics of microcirculation in oral lichen planus involving the lateral border of the tongue.

2009

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic mucosal condition commonly encountered in dental practice. Lichen planus is believed to represent an abnormal immune response in which epithelial cells are recognized as foreign, secondary to changes in the antigenicity of the cell surface. It has various oral manifestations. The aim of the study was to evaluate the morphological characteristics of microcirculation of lingual lichen planus (LLP). Twenty patients (10 patients with LLP and 10 healthy patients) were examined by means of videocapillaroscopy. The left margin of the lingual mucosa was examined in each patient. The capillary loop length, loop diameter, and capillary density were analyzed on ev…

A validation study of an Italian version of the ID Migraine: preliminary results

2005

Migraine is a highly prevalent and disabling disease that is substantially undiagnosed in primary care. Recently, the ID Migraine, a self–administered questionnaire, was shown to be a valid and reliable screener for migraine in primary care in the USA. To validate an Italian version of the ID Migraine, we planned a multicentric study, evaluating at least 220 patients affected by various form of headache. The responses to the questionnaire were compared with the diagnosis of headache made by a headache specialist blind to the result of the questionnaire. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values for migraine were calculated. The statistical analysis on 140 patient…

Clinical and microbiological findings in patients with peri-implantitis: a cross-sectional study

2015

Objective The aim of this study was to analyze clinical and microbiological characters in subjects and implants affected and not affected by peri-implantitis. Additionally, same features were analyzed also intra-individually, comparing healthy and diseased implants within the same subject. Materials and methods A total of 534 patients who received at least 1 implant and coming to routine check-up or spontaneous visits at the University of Valencia were recruited. Clinical parameters including Bleeding on probing (BoP), Probing pocket depth (PPD), and Pi were screened. Samples for microbiological analysis were obtained from three locations: peri-implant sulci (PIS), inner parts of the implan…

Influence of soft tissue grafting, orofacial implant position, and angulation on facial hard and soft tissue thickness at immediately inserted and pr…

2018

Background Resorption of hard and soft tissues following immediate implant insertion is frequently reported. Data regarding the influencing factors on facial tissue thickness are rare. Purpose This retrospective study investigated the impact of connective tissue grafting, the orofacial angulation and position of immediately inserted and provisionalized implants on the facial hard and soft tissue thickness in the anterior maxilla within a 1- to 5-year follow-up. Material and methods Implants with the prerequisite of having preoperative and postoperative cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and a follow-up of 1 to 5 years were included. Facial bone deficiencies were grafted flaplessly with au…

Periodontal Alteration of the Microcirculation and Hypercholesterolemia: A Possible Correlation?

2011

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the morphological and parametric characteristics of the periodontal microcirculation in patients diagnosed as having hypercholesterolemia and high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL). METHODS: Forty patients were recruited, 20 of whom were affected by hypercholesterolemia and 20 of whom were considered healthy. A videocapillaroscopic examination was carried out on the periodontal mucosa in the proximity of the frenulum (II, V sextant). RESULTS: The difference between the parameters of the hypercholesterolemia group and the control group was evaluated with the Mann-Whitney U-test for non-parametric ordinal data; the level of significance being P < 0.05. The videoc…

Periodontal microcirculation in diabetics: An in vivo non-invasive analysis by means of videocapillaroscopy

2012

Summary Background Diabetes mellitus is today considered a society-wide disease of a chronic/degenerative nature. Among the secondary effects of diabetes, the one that interests the dental surgeon most is diabetic parodontopathy. The aim of this study was to underline and objectify microcirculatory variations at a periodontal mucous level in type 2 diabetics. Material/Methods The study enrolled 80 subjects: 40 subjects with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus type II (18 males and 22 females, between 44 and 85 years of age); and 40 healthy subjects (17 males and 23 females, between 44 and 78 years of age). All the subjects, both diabetic and healthy, were submitted to a videocapillaroscopic ex…

IVIVC for fenofibrate immediate release tablets using solubility and permeability as in vitro predictors for pharmacokinetics.

2010

The goal of this study was to investigate the in vitro-in vivo correlation (IVIVC) for fenofibrate immediate release (IR) tablet formulations based on MeltDose-technique. The in vitro determined drug solubility and permeability data were related to the C(max) values observed from two in vivo human studies. Solubility and permeation studies of fenofibrate were conducted in medium simulating the fasted state conditions in the upper jejunum, containing the surfactant compositions of the six formulations at different concentrations. The behavior of all surfactant compositions was characterized by surface tension, dynamic light scattering, and cryo-TEM. The obtained solubility and permeation dat…

Acute effects of an exposure to 100 ppm 1-methoxypropanol-2 on the upper airways of human subjects.

2013

Abstract The German MAK value of 1-methoxypropanol-2 has been fixed at 100 ppm. The aim of this study was to evaluate possible acute effects of an exposure to 100 ppm 1-methoxypropanol-2 on the upper airways of human subjects. Twenty subjects were exposed in a crossover design to 100 ppm 1-methoxypropanol-2 and to air in an exposure chamber for 4 h. Subjective symptoms were assessed by questionnaire. Olfactory thresholds for n-butanol and mucociliary transport time were measured before and after exposure. Concentrations of interleukin 1β and interleukin 8 were determined in nasal secretions taken after exposure. mRNA levels of interleukins 1β, 6 and 8, tumor necrosis factor α, granulocyte-m…

On-eye optical quality of daily disposable contact lenses for different wearing times

2012

Purpose To quantify the optical quality of various daily disposable contact lenses in vivo and to ascertain its variation in terms of wearing time by means of objective non-invasive determination of wavefront patterns. Methods The crx1 adaptive-optics system was used to measure the wavefront aberrations in 15 myopic eyes before and at 2-h intervals after contact lens fitting, over a 12-h wearing period. Seven types of contact lenses having different material, water content and lens design were evaluated in this study: Dailies Total1, Dailies AquaComfort Plus, Proclear 1 Day, 1-Day Acuvue TruEye, 1-Day Acuvue moist, SofLens daily disposable and Clariti 1-Day. The aberration data were analyse…

Impact of antifungal prophylaxis on colonization and azole susceptibility of Candida species.

2009

ABSTRACT Two large studies compared posaconazole and fluconazole or itraconazole for prophylaxis in subjects undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation or subjects with acute myelogenous leukemia. To assess the impact of prophylaxis on colonization and the development of resistance in Saccharomyces yeasts, identification and susceptibility testing were performed with yeasts cultured at regular intervals from mouth, throat, and stool samples. Prior to therapy, 34 to 50% of the subjects were colonized with yeasts. For all three drugs, the number of positive Candida albicans cultures decreased during drug therapy. In contrast, the proportion of subjects with positive C. glab…
