Chromosome painting for cytogenetic monitoring of occupationally exposed and non-exposed groups of human individuals.

2001

The suitability of a three-color fluorescence in situ suppression hybridization technique was examined for monitoring five different groups of individuals: 30 occupied in radiology, 26 occupied in nuclear medicine or radiation physics, 32 patients with breast cancer, 26 occupied with military waste disposal, all presumably exposed to low doses of radiation or chemical mutagens and a non-exposed control group (N=29). The average frequency of breaks constituting the various aberrations did not significantly differ between the groups of medical radiation appliers and the control group. However, breast tumor patients and military waste disposers, as groups, showed a higher aberration rate than …

The Effectiveness of Laser-Assisted Surgical Excision of Leukoplakias and Hyperkeratosis of Oral Mucosa: A Case Series in A Group of Patients

2019

Introduction: In the different branches of dentistry, the use of laser to solve different clinical situations is increasing due to numerous advantages that have been studied in literature since the 70s. Leucoplakia and hyperkeratosis can benefit from laser-assisted treatment. In most cases biopsy sampling, histological examination and, if no malignant cells are present, the follow-up is needed. However, even if the lesion is free of dysplasia patients often ask to eliminate these white spots that are always a cause of concern. Aim: From these numerous requests comes the idea of setting up a laser-assisted protocol as less invasive as possible to be offered to patients. The aim of the study …

Pepsinogen testing for evaluation of the success of Helicobacter pylori eradication at 4 weeks after completion of therapy.

2014

Background and objective: Pepsinogen levels in plasma are increased by inflammation in the gastric mucosa, including inflammation resulting from Helicobacter pylori infection. A decrease in pepsinogen II level has been suggested as a reliable marker to confirm the successful eradication of infection. The aim of our study was to evaluate the potential role of pepsinogens I and II, gastrin-17 and H. pylori antibodies in confirming successful eradication. Material and methods: Altogether 42 patients (25 women, 17 men), mean age 45 years (range 23–74), were enrolled. Pepsinogens I and II, gastrin-17 and H. pylori IgG antibodies were measured in plasma samples using an ELISA test (Biohit, Oyj., …

Plasma resistin levels are associated with homocysteine, endothelial activation, and nitrosative stress in obese youths.

2013

To evaluate whether serum resistin levels are related to cardiovascular risk in obese children.Cross-sectional study of 110 children (40 normal weight and 70 severely obese). Clinical and biochemical parameters, including lipid profile, fasting glucose and insulin, and homocysteine, were determined. The levels of adipokines (adiponectin, leptin, and resistin), markers of inflammation (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP)), endothelial activation (serum concentrations of soluble intercellular and vascular cellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1, sVCAM-1)), and oxidative/nitrosative stress (malondialdehyde and urinary nitrate/nitrite) were measured.A partial correlation adjusted by gend…

Efficacy and safety of an intraoral electrostimulation device for xerostomia relief: a multicenter, randomized trial.

2011

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of an intraoral electrostimulation device, consisting of stimulating electrodes, an electronic circuit, and a power source, in treating xerostomia. The device delivers electrostimulation through the oral mucosa to the lingual nerve in order to enhance the salivary reflex. Methods The device was tested on a sample of patients with xerostomia due to Sjogren's syndrome and other sicca conditions in a 2-stage prospective, randomized, multicenter trial. Stage I was a double-blind, crossover stage designed to compare the effects of the electrically active device with the sham device, each used for 1 month, and stage II was a 3-month open-label stage d…

Effect of dual blockade of renin–angiotensin system on TGFβ1 and left ventricular structure and function in hypertensive patients

2007

The effects of 24 weeks losartan and ramipril treatment, both alone and in combination, on left ventricular mass (LVM), circulating transforming growth factor beta1 (TGFbeta1), procollagen type I (PIP) and III (PIIIP), have been evaluated in hypertensive (HT) patients. A total of 57 HT with stage 1 and 2 essential hypertension were included. After 4 weeks run in, a randomized double-blind, three arms, double dummy, independent trial was used. All HT patients were randomly allocated to three treatment arms consisting of losartan (50 mg/daily), ramipril (5 mg/ daily) and combined (losartan 50 mg/daily + ramipril 5 mg/daily) for 24 weeks. TGFbeta1, PIP and PIIIP, LVM, LVM/h(2.7) and other echo…

Cutaneous, genital and oral lichen planus: a descriptive study of 274 patients

2018

Background Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the oral mucosa as well as the skin, genital mucosa and other sites. Objective: to evaluate the correlation between oral, genital and cutaneous lichen planus, in a sample of LP patients. Material and Methods This descriptive study reviewed 274 clinical histories of patients, who all presented histological confirmation of lichen planus verified by a pathologist, attending research centers in Barcelona. Results A total of 40 LP patients (14.59%) presented genital lesions. Of 131 patients with cutaneous LP (47.8%), the most commonly affected zones were the body’s flexor surfaces, representing 60.1% of cases. 24% of pati…

The effect of acupuncture on oral microcirculation in healthy volunteers: an exploratory study.

2009

Background Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique currently used in the treatment of many pathologies. The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential effect of acupuncture on “in vivo” variations in oral microcirculation in healthy subjects. Methods An exploratory study was conducted on 40 healthy subjects: 20 cases (mean 55.90, SD 16.04) and 20 controls (mean 51, SD 11.91). Videocapillaroscopy was used to detect variations in oral microcirculation. This method permits an accurate and non-invasive in vivo study of the capillaries of the oral mucous. The site selected for this pilot study is the lower lip since it is the simplest to investigate and is more readily accessible. Assessments…

A 12-month Prospective Study of Tear Osmolarity in Contact Lens Wearers Refitted with Daily Disposable Soft Contact Lenses

2020

SIGNIFICANCE Tear osmolarity has been reported as one of the best diagnostic tests for dry eye disease and its management. Contact lens wear is thought to influence tear homeostasis. Understanding how regular wear of contact lenses and their type affect tear osmolarity is important. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to assess changes in tear osmolarity and ocular symptoms over a period of 12 months following refitting contact lens wearers with daily disposable contact lenses. METHODS Fifty subjects aged (mean ± SD) 26 ± 4 years were refitted with either silicone-hydrogel (delefilcon A, SiHy, n = 34) or hydrogel (omafilcon A, Hy, n = 16) daily disposable soft contact lenses. Study includ…
