Coronary Angioplasty in Unstable Angina

1990

When Gruntzig introduced the revolutionary method of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) for the treatment of coronary artery stenoses, he initially devoted this technique only to patients with stable angina pectoris [8]. Very soon, however, it was discovered simultaneously by Williams et al. [19] and by our group [12] that this method can also be used in patients with unstable angina pectoris. The earliest experiences with PTCA in 1980 were published by our two groups (Table 1). In these series the average degree of stenosis was somewhat lower than that today, while the residual stenosis after treatment was slightly higher. The very rough balloons and guiding catheters av…

Primary malignant PEComa of the mandible. Report of an unusual case

2021

Malignant PEComa is a rare entity that usually origins at visceral, retroperitoneal and abdominopelvic sites. In the present paper, we describe an extremely unusual manifestation of malignant PEComa involving the mandible in a 48 years-old female patient focusing on the anatomopathological findings and differential diagnosis. The therapeutic management based on the head and neck tumor board indications is also discussed. Key words:Malignant PEComa, PEComa of the mandible, PEComa pathology, Oral cavity unusual neoplasm.

Long-Term Results of Buccal Mucosa Onlay Grafts in Hypospadias Repair

2010

Purpose Buccal mucosa onlay grafts are widely used in complex Hypospadias surgery. In a retrospective study we evaluated the long-term results in patients with a minimum follow-up of 5 years. Material and Methods All patients in who underwent buccal mucosa grafting for Hypospadias repair in our institution received a questionnaire and were invited for a follow-up visit. The questionnaire included two visual analogue scales (VAS) concerning the functional and cosmetic result (0 = very dissatisfied; 50 = satisfied; 100 = very satisfied). Results A total of 85 patients with a median age at the operation of 7.4 years (1 – 60 years) could be followed for a median of 8 years (5-16 years). In 36/8…

ORTHOTOPIC BLADDER SUBSTITUTION IN WOMEN: FUNCTIONAL EVALUATION

1999

AbstractPurpose: Orthotopic bladder substitution following cystectomy in women has recently been introduced at some specialized centers. Studies of such a procedure should consider the oncological and functional outcomes. We analyzed only the functional results of orthotopic bladder substitution since followup is too short (about 2 years) for a valid oncological assessment.Materials and Methods: From October 1994 to November 1997, 60 women with a mean age of 48.3 years underwent standard radical cystectomy and orthotopic diversion (ileal W-neobladder with subserous tunnel in 47 and hemi-Kock reservoir in 13). The oncological criterion was organ confined invasive bladder cancer. Results: Ther…

Development of Bladder Carcinoma Following Portacaval Shunt in Rats

1987

Portacaval anastomosis (PCA) was first introduced by Eck (1877) and was investigated in a number of different animals. Lee et al. (1961; 1974) published a reliable method with low mortality in rats. The occurrence of urolithiasis in rats following portacaval anastomosis happened to be noticed by chance. It was published by Herz et al. (1972a, 1972b, 1973), who defined the portacaval shunt rat as an experimental model. Heine et al. (1979) described dysplastic and neoplastic changes of the bladder mucosa following portacaval anastomosis. His findings were confirmed by Duy et al. (1981); Grun et al. (1982), and Dubuisson et al. (1984). However, Wallace et al. (1984) found papillary hyperplasia…

CT imaging of acute and chronic pyelonephritis: a practical guide for emergency radiologists

2020

Contrast-enhanced CT is not routinely indicated in uncomplicated urinary infections, but it may be necessary in patients with specific risk factors (i.e., diabetes, immunocompromised patients, history of stones, or prior renal surgery) or in patients not responding to antibiotics and in detecting complications of pyelonephritis. CT is the gold standard for imaging assessment of pyelonephritis severity. Imaging appearance of acute pyelonephritis, including focal (i.e., wedge-shaped zones of decreased attenuation or hypodense mass) and diffuse (i.e., global enlargement, poor parenchymal enhancement, lack of excretion of contrast, fat stranding) forms, needs to be differentiated from renal inf…

Effects of ipriflavone on bone mass and calcium metabolism in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

1992

Recently it has been demonstrated that ipriflavone (IP), an isoflavone derivative, is able to increase bone mass in patients with established postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO). Here we present a preliminary report of a 2-year multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study performed in order to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of IP in PMO. A large number of patients with PMO, referred to 12 Italian centers, was randomly divided into 2 groups and treated with oral IP (600 mg/day) or placebo (Pl). All patients received an oral Ca supplement (1 g/day). One hundred and twenty six patients completed 1 year of the study. Bone mineral density (BMD) of the distal radius, measure…

Handling and pathology reporting of specimens with carcinoma of the urinary bladder, ureter, and renal pelvis.

2003

Abstract Objective: Pathologists play a pivotal role in the diagnosis and in the report of the pathological features related to prognosis. Methods: To meet these endpoints, the following issues must be accomplished: adequate information about the patient history, proper handling of the specimens, identification of the reliable histopathological techniques necessary to reach the more detailed diagnostic information and evaluate the prognostic variables, and a standardized pathological report. Results: Recent efforts to standardize the histopathological evaluation have generated significant confusion among the urological and pathological communities as well. No consensus has been achieved abo…

Is Kelami's Method Still Useful in the Smartphone Era? The Virtual 3-Dimensional Reconstruction of Penile Curvature in Patients With Peyronie's Disea…

2021

Abstract Background Peyronie's disease is an idiopathic fibrotic disease affecting the penile tunica albuginea. Among other resulting deformities, the more common penile curvature should be assessed preferentially with in-office goniometric estimation after pharmacologically induced erection, although clearly invasive and uncomfortable. Aim In the present pilot study, we investigated the usefulness for the patient and the surgeon of a 3-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the penile curvature obtained through photogrammetry software in clinical evaluation and surgical planning. Methods Enrolled patients received alprostadil 10 μg by intracavernous injection. Then, the medical personnel took …
