In this double-blind clinical trial 429 patients (217 terbinafine and 212 clotrimazole) were randomized to receive twice daily terbinafine 1% topical solution for 1 week followed by a vehicle application for 3 weeks, or 1% clotrimazole solution for 4 weeks. Patients were evaluated clinically and mycologically at baseline and then at weeks one, two, four (end of treatment), and eight (end of follow-up). To be evaluable the patient needed to have a positive culture for a dermatophyte and positive KOH microscopy and a clinical diagnosis of tinea pedis (interdigital type) at baseline. Effective treatment of tinea pedis was recorded in 181 of 217 (83%) of patients treated for 1 week with terbina…

MRT bei chronischer Epicondylitis humeri radialis an einem 1,0 T-Gerät - Kontrastmittelgabe notwendig?

2001

T: Is Gd-DTPA administration useful Purpose: Evaluation of the diagnostic value and confidence of contrast-enhanced MR imaging in patients with lateral epicondylitis in comparison to clinical diagnosis. Material and Methods: 42 consecutive patients with clinically proven chronic lateral epicondylitis and 10 ellbow joints of healthy controls have been examined on a 1.0 T MR-unit. Criteria for inclusion in the prospective study were: persistant pain and a failed conservative therapy. The MR protocol included STIR sequence, a native, T 2 -weighted, fat-supressed TSE sequence, and a Flash-2-D sequence. Also, fatsupressed, T 1 -weighted SE sequences before and after administration of Gd-DTPA con…

Neuropathic pain in cancer: systematic review, performance of screening tools and analysis of symptom profiles.

2017

Background The objectives of this study were to evaluate the methodological quality of rigorous neuropathic pain assessment tools in applicable clinical studies, and determine the performance of screening tools for identifying neuropathic pain in patients with cancer. Methods Systematic literature search identified studies reporting use of Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs (LANSS), Douleur Neuropathique en 4 (DN4) or painDETECT (PDQ) in cancer patients with a clinical diagnosis of neuropathic or not neuropathic pain. Individual patient data were requested to examine descriptor item profiles. Results Six studies recruited a total of 2301 cancer patients of which 1564 (68%) r…

Validation of motor and functional scales for the evaluation of adult patients with 5q spinal muscular atrophy

2021

ABSTRACTObjectiveTo assess in adult spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) patients the construct validity and responsiveness of several outcome measures.MethodsPatients older than 15 years and followed-up at least for 6 months, between October 2015 and August 2020, with one motor function scale (Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale Expanded, HFMSE; Revised Upper Limb module, RULM) in five referral centers were included. Bedside functional scales (Egen Klassification, EK2; Revised Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale, ALSFRS-R) were also collected when available. Correlations and regression models were performed to evaluate the construct validity. The monthly slopes of change were use…

Background: Central venous access devices (CVAD) provide important benefits in the management of oncological pediatric patients. However, these catheters are responsible for severe complications. Methods: In this context, we aimed to analyze all patients receiving a CVAD in the Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology of the University hospital of Mainz over a period of 9 years, focused on CVAD related complications. Data on demographics, as well as intraoperative and postoperative complications were extracted. Results: A total of 296 patients with a mean age 93.2 ± 62.4 months were analyzed. The majority suffered from leukemia (n = 91, 30.7%), lymphomas (n = 50, 16.9%), and brain tu…

2214Prevalence and severity of coronary disease in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia hospitalized for an acute myocardial infarction: data …

2019

Abstract Aim Individuals with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) are at high risk of early myocardial infarction (MI). However, coronary artery disease (CAD) burden of FH remains not well described. From a large database of a regional registry of acute MI, we aimed to address prevalence of FH and severity of CAD. Methods Consecutive patients hospitalized with MI in a multicentre database from 2001–2017 were considered. An algorithm, adapted from Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria, was built upon 4 variables (LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) and lipid lowering agents, premature and family history of CAD) to identify FH probabilities. Results Among the 11624 patients included in the surv…

Triage assessment of registered nurses in the emergency department

2013

Standardised triage systems have been implemented in emergency departments (EDs) to improve the efficacy of assessment strategies as performed by registered nurses (RNs). However, the exact effect the standardised triage systems have on the decision-making process remains unclear.Aim: To evaluate decision making in the triage setting before and after implementation of the Medical Emergency Triage and Treatment System Adult in one hospital's ED.Methods: A descriptive intervention design with a quantitative approach. A total of 655 patients before and 413 patients after the intervention were included. A questionnaire was used to evaluate how the RNs assessed the patients before intervention w…

Background It remains unclear whether the distal location of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is independently associated with a lower risk of recurrence in all patients, or represents a marker of the presence and severity of provoking factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Methods We investigated the impact of distal (vs. proximal) DVT location on the risk of developing symptomatic, objectively confirmed recurrent VTE in 831 patients with a first acute symptomatic DVT not associated with pulmonary embolism (PE), who were stratified by the presence of transient or persistent risk factors at baseline. The primary outcome was symptomatic, objectively diagnosed recurrent VTE, including proximal …
