Negotiating an identity : the mediated discursive self-representation of the Polish immigrant community in the UK
2017
The chapter investigates the mediated entextualizations of the identities of Polish immigrants to the UK in the period of post-crisis politics and economic reforms. The media discourse studied is collected from MojaWyspa.co.uk (MyIsland), one of the largest Polish-language online hubs designed for the substantial Polish community living on the British Isles. The study shows which discursive strategies of othering are employed to delimit the Polish immigrants’ collective identity, which self/other-presentation techniques are used, and how this group identity is legitimized argumentatively. It examines the linguistic realizations of self/other reference, active/passive and positive/negative p…
Post-it
2020
The history of the invention of post-it, the famous small piece of yellow paper with a re-adherable strip of glue, help us see how designing can be a way of redesigning more than a creation ex nihilo. A designer is who works on the meaning of things, focusing on the relations an artifact creates with humans and non humans. Standing in front of an object, then, the question changes: not what is design but when.

Modular Service Design of Information Technology-Enabled Services
2022
The literature has proposed ways to modularize information-technology-enabled services (ITeS) with limited success. We argue that applying design principles (DPs) can address this gap and revitalize the service modularization literature. With a qualitative research study, we develop exemplar DPs and a set of prioritized DPs for ITeS. We contribute to the literature by demonstrating how complex service systems, specifically ITeS, can be modularly designed. Our DPs show how different ITeS design elements or service attribute combinations impact the outcome-driven design of service experience. Based on the findings, we present a modular service design framework and a service design method tha…
Inny/obcy: doświadczenie języka i rzeczywistości (literacko-kulturowa ponowoczesność)
2017
The subject matter is developed around the Other, their presence and their personalising in the literary-cultural space. The reality becomes the source of observation (fiction and non-fiction) and reveals not only a variety of human experience in the world of multiculturalism, but also forms of “branding” the Other (rhetoric of the dominant communities towards cultural minorities) which correspond to them. The analysis of the rhetoric of speech and image permits to reveal the good and the bad side of language-cultural stereotypes, including also attitudes and behaviours affected by ideology.
Hydrothermal co-liquefaction of sewage sludge and formic acid
2019
The biocrude produced by non-catalytic hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) has a too high heteroatom content to be used directly as a fuel [1-3]. Several studies found that different H2 initial pressures during HTL experiments were ineffective in improving the biocrude yield [4-6], nevertheless it was observed that higher initial pressures of H2 brought an improvement of the concentration of light compounds in the biocrude, decreasing the average molecular weight of biocrude oil. To date H2 is mainly generated from fossil sources and realization of a possible hydrogen economy from alternative sources presents many challenges. The use of a liquid hydrogen storage media could represent for the HT…

Regulating (and Self-regulating) the Sharing Economy in Europe: An Overview
2018
The article describes the main legal challenges for regulating the sharing (or collaborative) economy in Europe and explains how the existing body of EU law applies to these new business models. In the last part, it makes a few brief comments on the need for future regulation.
The role of regional competitiveness in shaping the heterogeneous impact of the Great Recession
2020
This paper assesses the employment resilience of 202 European regions to the Great Recession by investigating the role of regional competitiveness. By using the regional shift component derived from a multiple bases shift–share analysis of employment change as a measure of regional endogenous employment growth, we show that pre‐crisis regional competitiveness determinants are associated with positive performances during the crisis period. However, the variables considered explain well the different vulnerability of the economies, but less convincingly the ability to recover. Taking into account the spatial interactions among regions, results are confirmed and allow us to identify spillover …
Emulation of Sun-Induced Fluorescence from Radiance Data Recorded by the HyPlant Airborne Imaging Spectrometer
2021
The retrieval of sun-induced fluorescence (SIF) from hyperspectral radiance data grew to maturity with research activities around the FLuorescence EXplorer satellite mission FLEX, yet full-spectrum estimation methods such as the spectral fitting method (SFM) are computationally expensive. To bypass this computational load, this work aims to approximate the SFM-based SIF retrieval by means of statistical learning, i.e., emulation. While emulators emerged as fast surrogate models of simulators, the accuracy-speedup trade-offs are still to be analyzed when the emulation concept is applied to experimental data. We evaluated the possibility of approximating the SFM-like SIF output directly based…
