Assessment of landfill leachate biodegradability and treatability by means of allochthonous and autochthonous biomasses

Abstract The biodegradability and treatability of a young (3 years old) municipal landfill leachate was evaluated by means of chemical oxygen demand (COD) fractionation tests, based on respirometric techniques. The tests were performed using two different biomasses: one cultivated from the raw leachate (autochthonous biomass) and the other collected from a conventional municipal wastewater treatment plant after its acclimation to leachate (allochthonous biomass). The long term performances of the two biomasses were also studied. An annotated checklist of freshwater Copepoda (Crustacea, Hexanauplia) from continental Ecuador and the Galapagos Archipelago.

An annotated checklist of the free-living freshwater Copepoda recorded in different regions in Ecuador (including the Amazon, the Andes, the coastal region, and the Galapagos Islands) is here provided. We revised all published records, critically evaluated the validity of each taxon and provided short taxonomic and biogeographical remarks for each one. A total of 27 taxa have been reported, including species and records at the generic level only. The species and taxa identified only up to the generic level belong to five families and 14 genera. Lake La Cruz, an Iron-Rich Karstic Meromictic Lake in Central Spain

Laguna de la Cruz (Lake La Cruz ) is a small karstic meromictic lake located in Central-Eastern Spain. Its biogenic meromixis (originated ca.1660) is favoured by the high relative depth and the steep doline walls. Calcium and magnesium bicarbonate are the main salts. The monimolimnion permanently spans from 18 m to the lake bottom (ca.21 m), whereas thermal stratification occurs above from April to October. Steep chemical gradients appear both at the bottom of the metalimnion (seasonally) and, permanently, at the permanent chemocline (16–18 m). In mammals, glutamate is a well-known neurotransmitter and recently has been recognized as an immunomodulator. Essential oils (EOs) are some of the outstanding compounds found in Thymus that can exert antifungal, phytotoxic, and insecticidal activities, which encourage their exploration and potential use for agricultural and food purposes. Knowledge of the factors governing this trait and the resulting fitness of individuals is thus necessary to refine predictions and make suitable decisions in crop protection.
