Mannitol-producing tobacco exposed to varying levels of water, light, temperature and paraquat

2007

Transgenic mannitol-producing (+mtlD) and wild-type (-mtlD) tobacco plants were exposed to water deficit, varying light intensities, low temperatures, and paraquat applications to test whether mannitol was involved in protection against abiotic stresses. In the water deficit experiment, -mtlD and +mtlD plants were fully irrigated [100% evapotranspiration (ET)] or received 25% ET for 40 d. Water deficit reduced the relative water content (RWC) of both types of plant starting on day 22 and the total stem length (TSL) of -mtlD 25% ET plants after 11 d, whereas TSL of +mtlD 25% ET was reduced only after 34 d. After 30 days of water deficit, a higher percentage of mature foliage was retained by …

A five-coordinate manganese(iii) complex of a salen type ligand with a positive axial anisotropy parameter D.

2017

A new high-spin d4 roughly trigonal–bipyramidal (TBP) manganese(III) complex with a salen type ligand (H2L), namely MnL(NCS)·0.4H2O, has been synthesised and characterised by elemental analysis, ESI mass spectrometry, IR and UV-vis spectroscopy, and spectroelectrochemistry. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed an axial compression of the approximate TBP. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility and variable-temperature variable-field (VTVH) magnetisation measurements, as well as high-frequency and -field EPR (HFEPR) spectroscopy, were used to accurately describe the magnetic properties of this complex and, in particular, determine the spin Hamiltonian parameters: g-values and the zero-f…

Carbon-13 chemical shifts of bicyclic compounds

1970

13C NMR absorption spectra of 50 bicyclic hydrocarbons, alcohols and ketones have been measured, in addition to some terpenes. The 13C chemical shifts are approximately additive for similar compounds and can be used for the determination of molecular structure; they differ for endo- and exo-isomers, just as in proton spectra. These quite regular and predictable 13C shift differences are much larger and are caused by the 1,4-nonbonded interaction between atoms heavier than hydrogen, not by magnetic anisotropy effects.

Autotrophic and Heterotrophic Picoplankton in Wetlands: Differences with Lake Patterns

2003

This study describes the occurrence, importance and seasonal patterns of picoplankton in two wetlands (TDNP and La Safor), and compares them to a system of fifteen interconnected lakes (Ruidera). In TDNP we performed a six-year monthly study in three sites of the wetland. Bacterial abundance increased throughout time and the autotrophic picoplankton (APP) range was wide (up to 33 x 10 6 cells/ml). The annual averaged APP contribution to total picoplankton and phytoplankton biovolumes was 0.5-22% and 0.03-6% respectively. There were large differences among sites in terms of APP absolute and relative abundance and seasonal patterns. In La Safor, the APP relative contribution to picoplankton a…

New exotic beams from the SPIRAL 1 upgrade

2018

Since 2001, the SPIRAL 1 facility has been one of the pioneering facilities in ISOL techniques for reaccelerating radioactive ion beams: the fragmentation of the heavy ion beams of GANIL on graphite targets and subsequent ionization in the Nanogan ECR ion source has permitted to deliver beams of gaseous elements (He, N, O, F, Ne, Ar, Kr) to numerous experiments. Thanks to the CIME cyclotron, energies up to 20 AMeV could be obtained. In 2014, the facility was stopped to undertake a major upgrade, with the aim to extend the production capabilities of SPIRAL 1 to a number of new elements. This upgrade, which is presently under commissioning, consists in the integration of an ECR booster in the…

Design of a 10 GHz minimum-B quadrupole permanent magnet electron cyclotron resonance ion source

2020

This paper presents a simulation study of a permanent magnet electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) with a minimum-B quadrupole magnetic field topology. The magnetic field is made to conform to conventional ECRIS with $B_\textrm{min}/B_\textrm{ECR}$ of 0.67 and a last closed magnetic isosurface of 1.86$B_\textrm{ECR}$ at 10 GHz. The distribution of magnetic field gradients parallel to the field, affecting the electron heating efficiency, cover a range from 0 to 13 T/m, being similar to conventional ECRIS. Therefore it is expected that the novel ion source produces warm electrons and high charge state ions in significant number. Single electron tracking simulations are used to estim…

Channeling experiments at planar diamond and silicon single crystals with electrons from the Mainz Microtron MAMI

2020

Line structures were observed for (110) planar channeling of electrons in a diamond single crystal even at a beam energy of 180 MeV . This observation motivated us to initiate dechanneling length measurements as function of the beam energy since the occupation of quantum states in the channeling potential is expected to enhance the dechanneling length. High energy loss signals, generated as a result of emission of a bremsstrahlung photon with about half the beam energy at channeling of 450 and 855 MeV electrons, were measured as function of the crystal thickness. The analysis required additional assumptions which were extracted from the numerical solution of the Fokker-Planck equation. Prel…

Characterization and Tuning of Ultra High Gradient Permanent Magnet Quadrupoles

2009

The application of quadrupole devices with high field gradients and small apertures requires precise control over higher order multipole field components. We present a new scheme for performance control and tuning, which allows the illumination of most of the quadrupole device aperture because of the reduction of higher order field components. Consequently, the size of the aperture can be minimized to match the beam size achieving field gradients of up to $500\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{T}\text{ }{\mathrm{m}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ at good imaging quality. The characterization method based on a Hall probe measurement and a Fourier analysis was confirmed using the high quality electron beam at the M…

IGR J17503–2636: a candidate supergiant fast X-ray transient

2019

IGR J17503-2636 is a hard X-ray transient discovered by INTEGRAL on 2018 August 11. This was the first ever reported X-ray emission from this source. Following the discovery, follow-up observations were carried out with Swift, Chandra, NICER, and NuSTAR. We report in this paper the analysis and results obtained from all these X-ray data. Based on the fast variability in the X-ray domain, the spectral energy distribution in the 0.5-80 keV energy range, and the reported association with a highly reddened OB supergiant at ~10 kpc, we conclude that IGR J17503-2636 is most likely a relatively faint new member of the supergiant fast X-ray transients. Spectral analysis of the NuSTAR data revealed …

A descriptive model for citrate utilization by Lactococcus lactis ssp lactis bv diacetylactis

1993

A model for the use of citrate by Lactococcus lactis ssp lactis bv diacetylactis CNRZ 125 is proposed. Citrate metabolism by this strain leads to the production of acetate, CO2 and C4 compounds (diacetyl, acetoin, 2,3-butylene glycol). The model furnishes correct simulations, consistent with published results on the pathways used and on lactose-citrate co-metabolism. Citric acid is incorporated independently of growth. The production of flavoring compounds is a complex process, depending on the rate of citrate utilization, on the proportion of pyruvate arising from citrate and which condenses to form α-acetolactate and CO2, on the rate of transformation of α-acetolactate to diacetyl and ace…
