The effect of weight on labor market outcomes: An application of genetic instrumental variables

2019

This paper contributes to the literature on the labor market consequences of obesity by using a novel instrument: genetic risk score, which reflects the predisposition to higher body mass index (BMI) across many genetic loci. We estimate instrumental variable models of the effect of BMI on labor market outcomes using Finnish data that have many strengths, for example, BMI that is measured rather than self‐reported, and data on earnings and social income transfers that are from administrative tax records and are thus free of the problems associated with nonresponse, reporting error or top coding. The empirical results are sensitive to whether we use a narrower or broader genetic risk score, …

Green Extraction Strategies for Sea Urchin Waste Valorization

2021

Commonly known as “purple sea urchin,” Paracentrotus lividus occurs in the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean. This species is a highly appreciated food resource and Italy is the main consumer among the European countries. Gonads are the edible part of the animal but they represent only a small fraction (10–30%) of the entire sea urchin mass, therefore, the majority ends up as waste. Recently, an innovative methodology was successfully developed to obtain high-value collagen from sea urchin by-products to be used for tissue engineering. However, tissues used for the collagen extraction are still a small portion of the sea urchin waste (<20%) and the remaining part, main…

Improvement in Nuclear Entry and Transgene Expression of Baculoviruses by Disintegration of Microtubules in Human Hepatocytes

2005

ABSTRACT Autographa californica multicapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV), a potent virus for mammalian cell gene delivery, possesses an ability to transduce mammalian cells without viral replication. We examined the role of the cellular cytoskeleton in the cytoplasmic trafficking of viral particles toward the nucleus in human hepatic cells. Microscopic studies showed that capsids were found in the nucleus after either viral inoculation or cytoplasmic microinjection of nucleocapsids. The presence of microtubule (MT) depolymerizing agents caused the amount of nuclear capsids to increase. Overexpression of p50/dynamitin, an inhibitor of dynein-dependent endocytic trafficking from peripheral e…

Identification of the dynein light chains required for human papillomavirus infection

2010

Summary Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are a family of small non-enveloped DNA viruses. Some genital HPV types, including HPV type 16 (HPV16), are the causative agent for the development of cancer at the site of infection. HPVs encode two capsid proteins, L1 and L2. After endocytic cell entry and egress from endosomes, L2 accompanies the viral DNA to the nucleus where replication is initiated. For cytoplasmic transport, L2 interacts with the microtubule network via the motor protein complex dynein. We have performed yeast two-hybrid screening and identified the dynein light chain DYNLT1 (previously called Tctex1) as interaction partner of HPV16 L2. Using co-immunoprecipitation and immunofluo…

Optimal Electrical Distribution Systems Reinforcement Planning Using Gas Micro Turbines by Dynamic Ant Colony Search Algorithm

2007

Distribution systems management is becoming an increasingly complicated issue due to the introduction of new energy trading strategies and new technologies. In this paper, an optimal reinforcement strategy to provide reliable and economic service to customers in a given time frame is investigated. In the new deregulated energy market and considering the incentives coming from the political and economical fields, it is reasonable to consider distributed generation (DG) as a viable option for systems reinforcement. In the paper, the DG technology is considered as a possible solution for distribution systems capacity problems, along several years. Therefore, compound solutions comprising the i…

Current Status of Nanoclay Phytotoxicity

2018

The use of nanotechnology in several fields has created a great interest and its rapid development with application in material science, nanomedicine, medical diagnosis, computer chips, catalysis and so on. The use of nanomaterials represents various advantages, including size, highly active surfaces, unique physico-chemical properties, and in some cases a controlled release of chemicals. In this context phyto-nanotechnology is growing and has promising application in agricultural aspects, such as use of soil remediation, antioxidants, adsorbents, nano-sensor for detection of soil quality, delivery of fertilizers and many others. Plants are very important components of the terrestrial eco-s…

Simulation model of a molten carbonate fuel cellemicroturbine hybrid system

2011

A Hybrid System based on High Temperature Fuel Cells coupled to a Microturbine allows a high efficiency, low environmental pollution and it may be exploited as a CHP System producing heat and electricity both Grid Connected and Stand Alone; the overall electrical efficiency could reach a very high value (up to 60%) and total efficiency could be over 70% including the contribution due to heat recovery. In the context of wide research activities of ENEA on High Temperature Fuel Cells and Hybrid Systems e that involve materials, system BoP and fuels e a very great effort has been devoted to design and build, in the ENEA Research Centre of “Casaccia”, an experimental Test-Rig based on a Molten …

Optimizing the H3PO4 leaching conditions of post-precipitated sewage sludge using response surface methodology

2018

The leaching procedure of post-precipitated aluminium phosphate sludge with dilute phosphoric acid was developed. The leaching offers a route to recover both critical phosphorous from sewage sludge and the metal used in precipitation. Using phosphoric acid as leaching solution makes it possible to continue the recovery process without the need to remove chloride or sulfate anions. The optimization of the leaching was based on experimental three-level-four-variable central composite face-centered design. The four variables included were acid concentration, volume of acid, temperature and time of leaching. The leaching was conducted for dewatered and water-containing sludge (total solid conte…

A survey of photocatalytic materials for environmental remediation

2012

Abstract Heterogeneous photocatalysis is an advanced oxidation process which has been the subject of a huge amount of studies related to air cleaning and water purification. All these processes have been carried out mainly by using TiO 2 -based materials as the photocatalysts and ca. 75% of the articles published in the last 3 years is related to them. This review illustrates the efforts in the search of alternative photocatalysts that are not based on TiO 2 , with some exceptions concerning particularly innovative modifications as nanoassembled TiO 2 or TiO 2 composites with active carbon, graphite and fullerene. Papers reporting preparation, characterization and testing of binary, ternary…
