The Essence Theory of Software Engineering – Large-Scale Classroom Experiences from 450+ Software Engineering BSc Students

2018

Software Engineering as an industry is highly diverse in terms of development methods and practices. Practitioners employ a myriad of methods and tend to further tailor them by e.g. omitting some practices or rules. This diversity in development methods poses a challenge for software engineering education, creating a gap between education and industry. General theories such as the Essence Theory of Software Engineering can help bridge this gap by presenting software engineering students with higher-level frameworks upon which to build an understanding of software engineering methods and practical project work. In this paper, we study Essence in an educational setting to evaluate its usefuln…

The entrepreneurial logic of startup software development : A study of 40 software startups

2021

Context: Software startups are an essential source of innovation and software-intensive products. The need to understand product development in startups and to provide relevant support are highlighted in software research. While state-of-the-art literature reveals how startups develop their software, the reasons why they adopt these activities are underexplored. Objective: This study investigates the tactics behind software engineering (SE) activities by analyzing key engineering events during startup journeys. We explore how entrepreneurial mindsets may be associated with SE knowledge areas and with each startup case. Method: Our theoretical foundation is based on causation and effectuatio…

What happens when software developers are (un)happy

2017

The growing literature on affect among software developers mostly reports on the linkage between happiness, software quality, and developer productivity. Understanding happiness and unhappiness in all its components -- positive and negative emotions and moods -- is an attractive and important endeavor. Scholars in industrial and organizational psychology have suggested that understanding happiness and unhappiness could lead to cost-effective ways of enhancing working conditions, job performance, and to limiting the occurrence of psychological disorders. Our comprehension of the consequences of (un)happiness among developers is still too shallow, being mainly expressed in terms of developmen…

Growth and characterization of horizontally suspended CNTs across TiN electrode gaps.

2010

A technique is proposed to grow horizontal carbon nanotubes (CNTs) bridging metal electrodes and to assess their electrical properties. A test structure was utilized that allows for selective electrochemical sidewall catalyst placement. The selectivity of the technique is based on the connection of the desired metal electrodes to the silicon substrate where the potential for electrochemical deposition was applied. Control over the Ni catalyst size (15-30 nm) and density (up to 3 x 10(11) particles cm(-2)) is demonstrated. Horizontal CNTs with controlled diameter and density were obtained by CVD growth perpendicular to the sidewalls of patterned TiN electrode structures. Electrode gaps with …

Liquid-phase alkali-doping of individual carbon nanotube field-effect transistors observed in real-time

2011

The carbon nanotube (CNT) is known to be very sensitive to changes in its surrounding environment. Our study is on the effects of mild, liquid-phase alkali-doping on electronic transport in individual CNTs. We find clear and consistent reversal from p- to n-type behavior, with all seven investigated CNT field-effect transistors (FETs) retaining a similar ON/OFF ratio and subthreshold slope. We have also measured the realtime electronic response during liquid-phase doping, and demonstrate detection of alkali cations with a signal response that ranges over more than three orders of magnitude. The doping is fully reversible upon exposure to oxygen, and the doping cycle is repeatable. We also c…

The entangled relationship between cilia and actin

2020

Primary cilia are microtubule-based sensory cell organelles that are vital for tissue and organ development. They act as an antenna, receiving and transducing signals, enabling communication between cells. Defects in ciliogenesis result in severe genetic disorders collectively termed ciliopathies. In recent years, the importance of the direct and indirect involvement of actin regulators in ciliogenesis came into focus as it was shown that F-actin polymerisation impacts ciliation. The ciliary basal body was further identified as both a microtubule and actin organising centre. In the current review, we summarize recent studies on F-actin in and around primary cilia, focusing on different acti…

Perheiden käsityksiä lapsen fysioterapian tavoitteista

2015

Botuliinihoito on vakiinnuttanut asemansa lasten neurologisiin oireyhtymiin liittyvän liiallisen lihasaktiivisuuden hoidossa. Hoitovasteen saavuttamista tuetaan kotiharjoittelulla, jossa harjoitteet toteutetaan fysioterapeutin yksittäisen ohjauskerran jälkeen kotona vanhempien avustamana ja ohjauksella. Fysioterapiassa asiakaslähtöisyys, tavoitteen asettaminen sekä omatoimiseen harjoitteluun tähtäävä ohjaus ovat tämän päivän toiminnan lähtökohtia. Potilaan ohjaukseen liittyvien tekijöiden ja toimivien käytäntöjen todentaminen edellyttää fysioterapian tutkimusta. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli kuvata botox – hoitoa saaneiden lasten vanhempien käsityksiä lapsen fysioterapian tavoitteista. Aine…

Musiikin ja sen käytön terapeuttisia merkityksiä ja vaikutuksia varhaiskasvatuksessa : fenomenografinen interventiotutkimus varhaiskasvattajan käsity…

2014

MUSIIKIN JA SEN KÄYTÖN TERAPEUTTISIA MERKITYKSIÄ JA VAIKUTUKSIA VARHAISKASVATUKSESSA. Fenomenografinen interventio-tutkimus varhais-kasvattajien käsityksistä terapeuttisesta musiikkikasvatuksesta. Tämän fenomenografisen interventiotutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli kerätä varhaiskasvatuksessa toimivien kasvattajien käsityksiä terapeuttisesta musiikkikasvatuksesta. Tutkimus pyrki hahmottamaan, mitä terapeuttisuuden käsite tarkoittaa varhaiskasvatuksessa olevan musiikkikasvatuksen viitekehyksessä ja lisäämään tietoisuutta musiikkikasvatuksen terapeuttisista aspekteista sekä mahdollisuuksista lasten opetuksessa ja kuntoutuksessa. Tutkimus selvitti, miten interventio vaikutti kasvattajien käsityksii…

The Co‐mutational Spectrum Determines the Therapeutic Response in Murine FGFR2 Fusion‐Driven Cholangiocarcinoma

2021

Background and aims Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is the second most common primary liver cancer and a highly lethal malignancy. Chemotherapeutic options are limited, but a considerable subset of patients harbors genetic lesions for which targeted agents exist. Fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) fusions belong to the most frequent and therapeutically relevant alterations in ICC, and the first FGFR inhibitor was recently approved for the treatment of patients with progressed, fusion-positive ICC. Response rates of up to 35% indicate that FGFR-targeted therapies are beneficial in many but not all patients. Thus far, no established biomarkers exist that predict resistance or r…
