La battaglia di Himera nelle Storie di Erodoto e il sincronismo con Salamina
2022
The very short report of the battle of Himera given by Herodotus’ Histories seems to have the primary aim of supporting a widespread tradition among the inhabitants of Sicily (still circulating at the time when the historian lived) about the true reason preventing Gelon from siding with the Hellenic League against Persians: he was impelled to engage in the battle of Himera, which took place the very same day as the sea battle of Salamis. No celebratory intent emerges from the account of Gelon’s and Theron’s victory over the Carthaginians, since Herodotus wants to report all the versions known to him about the explanations given to Gelon’s refusal to join the Hellenic League; there is no roo…

Arruolare la natura in Erodoto
2018
The study identifies the roles assigned by Herodotus to natural and environmental elements in war events, or in general conflictual events. These elements are considered as cooperators of justice by virtue of law according to which men and the local natural environment constitute a complex of mutually supportive parts and even in a concrete relationship of mutual aid. They also appear as spaces characterized in a merely dimensional sense. Here the Greek «smallness» is functional to the impossibility of containing the number of the Persian army which, therefore, can only be defeated.
Catechol-Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes as Support for Pd Nanoparticles
2022
Carbon nanotubes have been covalently functionalized with catechol moieties through the formation of the corresponding aryl radicals obtained by reacting 4-aminocatechol with isoamyl nitrite. The functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes have been in turn used to immobilize Pd(II) ions on its surface forming catechol-Pd complexes, which were reduced to Pd nanoparticles (NPs). The so-obtained hybrid material has been characterized by means of thermogravimetric analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This latter technique allowed to estimate the nanoparticle size (5.7 +/- 2.8 nm) wh…
Mechanical properties of carbon nanotube fibres: St Venant’s principle at the limit and the role of imperfections
2015
Abstract Carbon nanotube (CNT) fibres, especially if perfect in terms of their purity and alignment, are extremely anisotropic. With their high axial strength but ready slippage between the CNTs, there is utmost difficulty in transferring uniformly any applied force. Finite element analysis is used to predict the stress distribution in CNT fibres loaded by grips attached to their surface, along with the resulting tensile stress–strain curves. This study demonstrates that, in accordance with St Venant’s principle, very considerable length-to-diameter ratios (∼103) are required before the stress becomes uniform across the fibre, even at low strains. It is proposed that lack of perfect orienta…
Digging into group establishment: Intervention design and evaluation
2021
Previous research has documented challenges in students’ group work. An identifiable segment of the previous research that relates to improving students’ group work conditions is the study of group formation and self- and peer-assessment. Though studies that primarily focus on how to address the conditions of students’ group work and the existing problems can be found, there are not many related to higher education settings. On this ground, the present article advances a qualitative evaluation of the intervention that promotes student groups’ self-awareness and thereby self-regulation toward fair group work during a software engineering project. An inductive thematic analysis was applied to…
Development of the filiform hairs on the cerci of Gryllus bimaculatus Deg. (Saltatoria, Gryllidae)
1978
The filiform hairs, mechanoreceptors of Gryllus, pass through six developmental stages during the last larval stage. The cytoplasm of their sense cells suggests intensive synthesis of protein for cellular metabolism and intercytoplasmic exchange of material via glial evaginations. Ultrahistochemical tests demonstrated acid phosphatase in the lysosomes as well as in components of the Golgi apparatus. There was no significant change in the appearance of the sense cell cytoplasm, indicating a maintained functional state also during molting. The new cuticular apparatus is formed after apolysis by the three enveloping cells. Formation of the replacement hairs is initiated by a cytoplasmic outgro…
