Breeding state and season affect interspecific interaction types: indirect resource competition and direct interference.
2011
Indirect resource competition and interference are widely occurring mechanisms of interspecific interactions. We have studied the seasonal expression of these two interaction types within a two-species, boreal small mammal system. Seasons differ by resource availability, individual breeding state and intraspecific social system. Live-trapping methods were used to monitor space use and reproduction in 14 experimental populations of bank voles Myodes glareolus in large outdoor enclosures with and without a dominant competitor, the field vole Microtus agrestis. We further compared vole behaviour using staged dyadic encounters in neutral arenas in both seasons. Survival of the non-breeding over…
Inducible NO synthase confers chemoresistance in head and neck cancer by modulating survivin
2009
The dual role of the inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and NO signaling in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a complex and can both promote or inhibit tumor progression. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not yet resolved in detail. We show for the first time that conditions, favoring low NO levels conferred resistance against cisplatin/taxol-induced apoptosis in HNSCC cell lines. Cytoprotection was mediated by survivin, because we observed its upregulation subsequent to low doses of the NO donors S-nitroso-N-acetyl-penicillamine (SNAP) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) or ectopic expression of physiologic amounts of iNOS. Also, RNAi-mediated depletion of survivin block…
Local Delivery of Nimodipine by Prolonged-Release Microparticles—Feasibility, Effectiveness and Dose-Finding in Experimental Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
2012
Background and purposeTo investigate the effect of locally applied nimodipine prolonged-release microparticles on angiographic vasospasm and secondary brain injury after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).Methods70 male Wistar rats were categorized into three groups: 1) sham operated animals (control), 2) animals with SAH only (control) and the 3) treatment group. SAH was induced using the double hemorrhage model. The treatment group received different concentrations (20%, 30% or 40%) of nimodipine microparticles. Angiographic vasospasm was assessed 5 days later using digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Histological analysis of frozen sections was performed using H&E-staining as …
The effects of a physical and cognitive training intervention vs. physical training alone on older adults' physical activity : A randomized controlle…
2021
BackgroundExecutive functions underlie self-regulation and are thus important for physical activity and adaptation to new situations. The aim was to investigate, if yearlong physical and cognitive training (PTCT) had greater effects on physical activity among older adults than physical training (PT) alone, and if executive functions predicted physical activity at baseline, after six (6m) and twelve months (12m) of the interventions, one-year post-intervention follow-up and an extended follow-up during COVID-19 lockdown.MethodsData from a single-blinded, parallel-group randomized controlled trial (PASSWORD-study, ISRCTN52388040) were utilized. Participants were 70-85 years old community-dwel…
Dynamic changes of the microtubule system corresponding to the unequal and spiral cleavage modes in the embryo of the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymor…
1998
Unequal cleavage requires a highly organised cytoskeleton. We investigated the localisation of both tubulins and microtubular arrays in Dreissena eggs during and after fertilisation using confocal laser scanning microscopy. Freshly spawned eggs are arrested in metaphase I. A maternal pool of γ-tubulin is found mainly in the centre of the asters of the meiotic spindle. The paternal pool of γ-tubulin, present in the fertilising sperm, could not be traced within the egg, but a microtubule-organising centre forms near the male pronucleus at anaphase II. Male and female pronuclei grow as they migrate in the wake of their aster and rendezvous. First cleavage is unequal and starts without pronucle…
Event-related potentials to task-irrelevant sad faces as a state marker of depression
2018
Negative bias in face processing has been demonstrated in depression, but there are no longitudinal investigations of negative bias in symptom reduction. We recorded event-related potentials (P1 and N170) to task-irrelevant facial expressions in depressed participants who were later provided with a psychological intervention and in never depressed control participants. Follow-up measurements were conducted for the depressed group two and 39 months later. Negative bias was found specifically in the depression group, and was demonstrated as enlarged P1 amplitude to sad faces, which normalized in the follow-up measurements when the participants had fewer symptoms. Because the P1 amplitude reco…
OnabotulinumtoxinA: how deep will it go?
2014
First-line treatment of overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) is based on conservative measures and oral medication such asmuscarinic receptor antagonists and, more recently, b3-adrenoceptor agonists. While this provides effective symptom relief for many patients, for others it has insufficient efficacy and/or intolerable side effects. The potent neurotoxin onabotulinumtoxinA (BoNT-A) has shown efficacy in placebo-controlled trials in patients with neurogenic voiding dysfunction or OAB [1], largely including patients exhibiting an insufficient treatment response to muscarinic antagonists. Although the role of a strong placebo component in the beneficial effects of oral treatment is well known, a…
Androglobin, a chimeric mammalian globin, is required for male fertility
2022
AbstractSpermatogenesis is a highly specialised process, involving multiple dedicated pathways and regulatory check-points. Defects ultimately lead to male sub-fertility or sterility, and numerous aspects of mammalian sperm formation remain unknown. The predominant expression of the latest globin family member, androglobin (Adgb) in mammalian testis tissue prompted us to assess its physiological function in spermatogenesis. Adgb knockout mice display male infertility, reduced testis weight, impaired maturation of elongating spermatids, abnormal sperm shape and ultrastructural defects in microtubule and mitochondrial organisation. Epididymal sperm from Adgb knockout animals display multiple …
Early diffuse leptomeningeal primitive neuroectodermal tumors can escape detection by magnetic resonance imaging.
2000
Primitive neuroectodermal tumors are easily detected by neuroradiologic imaging, as a rule. We report on two patients with early diffuse leptomeningeal primitive neuroectodermal tumors which escaped detection by contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.
Familial Mediterranean fever as an unusual cause of acute scrotum.
2001
Correct preoperative diagnosis is the crucial step in the management of acute scrotum. With the adjunct of color Doppler ultrasound, torsion of testicular appendages, epidydimitis and orchitis as the more common nonsurgical causes are differentiated reliably from testicular torsion or incarcerated inguinal hernia. Less frequently, acute scrotal swelling is the initial symptom of systemic disorders. Leukemic infiltration of the testis or scrotal involvement in vasculitis
