Clinical experience of lomitapide therapy in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia.

2014

The microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) inhibitor lomitapide is a licenced adjunct to a low-fat diet and other lipid-lowering medication, with or without low-density lipoprotein apheresis, for the treatment of adults with homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HoFH). In a recently published phase 3 study, patients with HoFH received lomitapide in addition to maximally tolerated lipid-lowering therapy. Treatment with lomitapide resulted in a mean approximate 50% reduction in LDL-C levels after 26 weeks compared with baseline levels (p < 0.0001). This decrease in LDL-C was maintained at Weeks 56 and 78 (44% [p < 0.0001] and 38% [p = 0.0001], respectively). This paper offers cli…

Beclomethasone dipropionate in Crohn's ileitis: A randomised, double-blind trial.

2011

Abstract Background Steroids, the mainstay of Crohn's disease treatment, have been associated with systemic side effects. Aim To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of beclomethasone dipropionate for maintaining remission induced by a short course of systemic steroids in patients with Crohn's ileitis with or without right colonic involvement. Methods Patients (n = 84) with active Crohn's disease who achieved remission during a 2-week prednisone run-in period were randomised to receive beclomethasone dipropionate for 24 weeks or continue prednisone for a further 2 weeks followed by placebo for 22 weeks. The primary outcome was relapse rate (Crohn's Disease Activity Index score > 150 and a…

Effects of cilazapril on renal haemodynamics and function in hypertensive patients: a randomised controlled study versus hydrochlorothiazide.

1995

In this study the efficacy and safety of short-term cilazapril administration on renal haemodynamics were evaluated in mild to moderate hypertensive subjects. Our final goal was to evaluate whether the reduction in blood pressure achieved by treatment was associated with maintained renal function. After a run-in period with placebo, 40 hypertensive subjects without renal or cardiac diseases were randomly allocated to a double-blind 4 week controlled trial with cilazapril 5 mg once a day (20 patients) or hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg once a day (20 patients). Renal haemodynamics measurements included effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) by radionuclide study us…

Five-year retrospective italian multicenter study of visceral leishmaniasis treatment.

2014

ABSTRACT The treatment of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is poorly standardized in Italy in spite of the existing evidence. All consecutive patients with VL admitted at 15 Italian centers as inpatients or outpatients between January 2004 and December 2008 were retrospectively considered; outcome data at 1 year after treatment were obtained for all but 1 patient. Demographic characteristics, underlying diseases, diagnostic procedures, treatment regimens and outcomes, as well as side effects were recorded. A confirmed diagnosis of VL was reported for 166 patients: 120 (72.3%) immunocompetent, 21 (12.6%) patients with immune deficiencies other than HIV infection, and 25 (15.1%) coinfected with HI…

A short message service (SMS)-based strategy for enhancing adherence to antipsychotic medication in schizophrenia

2012

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to assess the impact of a short message service (SMS)-based strategy on adherence to antipsychotic treatment. Methods A multicentre, randomised, open-label, controlled, 6-month study with clinically stabilised outpatients with schizophrenia was conducted. The patients assigned to the intervention received daily SMS reminders to take their medication for 3 months. Self-reported medication adherence was determined using the Morisky Green Adherence Questionnaire (MAQ). Secondary outcomes were severity of illness, attitude towards medication, insight into illness and health-related quality of life. Results A total of 254 patients were analysed.

Cardioprotective Effects of the Na + /H + Exchange Inhibitor Cariporide in Patients With Acute Anterior Myocardial Infarction Undergoing Direct PTCA

2000

Background —Activation of Na + /H + exchange in myocardial ischemia and/or reperfusion leads to calcium overload and myocardial injury. Experimental studies have shown that Na + /H + exchange inhibitors can attenuate Ca 2+ influx into cardiomyocytes. We therefore performed a multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial to test the hypothesis that inhibition of Na + /H + exchange limits infarct size and improves myocardial function in patients with acute anterior myocardial infarction (MI) treated with direct PTCA. Methods and Results —One hundred patients were randomized to receive placebo (n=51) or a 40-mg intravenous bolus of the Na + /H + exchange inhibitor cariporide (HOE…

Single-Sided Deafness: Impact of Cochlear Implantation on Speech Perception in Complex Noise and on Auditory Localization Accuracy.

2017

Objective To assess auditory localization accuracy and speech reception threshold (SRT) in complex noise conditions in adult patients with acquired single-sided deafness, after intervention with a cochlear implant (CI) in the deaf ear. Study design Nonrandomized, open, prospective patient series. Setting Tertiary referral university hospital. Patients Eleven patients with late-onset single-sided deafness (SSD) and normal hearing in the unaffected ear, who received a CI. All patients were experienced CI users. Intervention Unilateral cochlear implantation. Main outcome measures Speech perception was tested in a complex multitalker equivalent noise field consisting of multiple sound sources. …

Endoscopic endonasal pituitary surgery: Surgical and outcome analysis of 50 cases

2007

Abstract Objective Microsurgical transsphenoidal surgery for pituitary tumors has been standard therapy for decades and was established by Harvey Cushing in the early twentieth century. Today, endoscopy is increasingly accepted in the therapy of pituitary lesions. In this retrospective study, we analysed the surgical technique and outcome of 50 patients with pituitary lesions treated with an endoscopic endonasal trans-sphenoidal approach. Methods Between January 2004 and July 2005, 50 patients (30 female and 20 male) with pituitary tumors were operated upon using an endoscopic endonasal trans-sphenoidal procedure without nasal speculum or postoperative nasal packing. The follow-up period ra…
