From virtual to real healing: a critical overview of the therapeutic use of virtual reality to cope with mourning

2021

In recent years, virtual reality (VR) has been effectively employed in several settings, ranging from health care needs to leisure and gaming activities. A new application of virtual stimuli appeared in social media: in the documentary 'I met you' from the South-Korean Munhwa Broadcasting, a mother made the experience of interacting with the avatar of the seven-year-old daughter, who died four years before. We think that this new application of virtual stimuli should open a debate on its possible implications: it represents contents related to grief, a dramatic and yet natural experience, that can have deep psychological impacts on fragile subjects put in virtual environments. In the presen…

The role of GLP-1 receptor agonists during COVID-19 pandemia: a hypothetical molecular mechanism

2021

ABSTRACT Introduction A number of anti-diabetic treatments have been favored during the continuing spread of the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Glucagon like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RAs) are a group of antidiabetic drugs, the glucose reducing effect of which is founded on augmenting glucose-dependent insulin secretion with concomitant reduction of glucagon secretion and delayed gastric emptying. Apart from their glucose lowering effects, GLP1-RAs also exert a plethora of pleiotropic activities in the form of anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic and anti-obesogenic properties, with beneficial cardiovascular and renal impact. All these make this class of drugs a preferred option for man…

Chloroquine for COVID-19: rationale, facts, hopes

2020

The tragedy of the pandemic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) led to a desperate search for effective treatments. Chloroquine (CQ), an aminoquinoline used for many years for the prophylaxis and therapy of malaria and autoimmune diseases, has been put forward as a treatment option. The fact that CQ is not patented and has been in clinical use for years is a major advantage. CQ has been shown to have antiviral effects in SARS, MERS, Ebola, and HIV infections, but without data showing clinical effectiveness [1, 2]. Does the current level of evidence suffice for prescribing CQ for COVID-19?

Effects of pasireotide treatment on coagulative profile: a prospective study in patients with Cushing's disease.

2018

Introduction: Cushing’s disease (CD) is characterized by procoagulative profile. Treatment with cortisol-reducing medications might normalize the coagulation impairment potentially eliminating the risk of thromboembolic complications. Aim: The aim of this prospective study is to evaluate the effectiveness of 6–12 months of treatment with pasireotide (Signifor®, Novartis) 600 µg twice daily on coagulative factors in 21 patients (16 females, mean age 46 ± 12.2 years) with CD. Biochemical, hormonal (urinary free cortisol, UFC; late night salivary cortisol, LNSC; ACTH) and coagulative parameters as Protrombin time (PT), aPTT, factors VIII, IX and XI, antithrombin III, protein C, protein S, fibr…

Effects of comprehensive geriatric assessment and targeted intervention on mobility in persons aged 75 years and over: a randomized controlled trial

2011

Objective: To assess the effect of a comprehensive geriatric assessment and individually tailored intervention on mobility in older people. In addition, the effectiveness of the geriatric intervention was evaluated among a subgroup of persons with musculoskeletal pain. Design: Three-year geriatric development project with randomized assignment to intervention and control group. Setting: Research centre, community and assisted living facilities. Participants: Seven hundred and eighty-one Finnish persons aged 75–98 years were assigned to an intervention ( n = 404) or control ( n = 377) group. Intervention: A comprehensive geriatric assessment with a multifactorial intervention lasting two ye…

Counseling Patients with a Glioblastoma Amenable Only for Subtotal Resection: Results of a Multicenter Retrospective Assessment of Survival and Neuro…

2017

Background Patients with a glioblastoma (GB) amenable only for subtotal resection (STR) represent a challenge in patient counseling. Our objective was to assess impact of extent of resection (EoR) on survival and clinical outcome of these patients. Methods We performed a retrospective multicenter assessment. Patients receiving an intended STR in 3 centers with unilocular, primary, highly eloquent GB who received the same adjuvant treatment were included. We assessed EoR, neurologic outcome, and rate of complications. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were calculated with Kaplan–Meier estimations. We used 1% EoR and 1-cm3 steps to detect a threshold for a minimal EoR …

Multicomponent Exercise Training Combined with Nutritional Counselling Improves Physical Function, Biochemical and Anthropometric Profiles in Obese C…

2020

Aerobics or strength exercise plus diet interventions have been shown to counteract childhood obesity. However, little is known with regard to periodized multicomponent exercise interventions combined with nutritional counselling, which might be less demanding but more enjoyable and respectful of children and adolescents&rsquo

Effect of a short-term psychological intervention on the anxiety and depression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients

2014

This study evaluated the effectiveness of a psychological intervention in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients, consisting of four semi-structured sessions of cognitive behavioural therapy combined with counselling techniques. An intervention group and a control group were established. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used to assess levels of anxiety and depression. In total, fifty-four patients took part. Prior to the intervention, the intervention group displayed rates of 63.3 and 36.7 per cent for anxiety and depression, respectively, falling to 16.7 and 10.0 per cent afterwards. The psychological intervention demonstrated potential for the reduction of levels of anxiety …

Effect of a 3-week body mass reduction program on body composition, muscle function and motor performance in pubertal obese boys and girls

2005

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a multidisciplinary body mass reduction (BMR) program on body composition, muscle function and motor performance in 50 obese [mean body mass index (BMI): 35.9+/-5.8 kg/m2] boys and girls aged 12-17 yr (Tanner stage III, IV and V). The hospital-based BMR program combined an energy-restricted diet (1400-1600 kcal), nutritional education, psychological counselling and moderate physical activity (45-60 min/ session; 5 sessions/week; 60-80% of the maximal heart rate) during a 3-week period. Fat mass, fat-free mass, maximal power during jumping and stair climbing as well as maximal strength of the upper and lower limb muscles were quantified…

Effect of a social intervention of choice vs. control on depressive symptoms, melancholy, feeling of loneliness, and perceived togetherness in older …

2016

Objectives: This study examined effects of a social intervention on depressive symptoms, melancholy, loneliness, and perceived togetherness in community-dwelling Finnish older people. Method: Promotion of mental well-being in older people (GoodMood; ISRCTN78426775) was a single-blinded randomized control trial lasting 1.5 years. Two hundred and twenty-three persons aged 75–79 years reporting symptoms of loneliness or melancholy were randomized into intervention and control groups. The intervention group was allowed to choose among supervised exercise, social activity, or personal counseling. Follow-up measurements were conducted at the end of 6-month intervention, and at 3, 6, and 12 months…
