MYOCARDIAL POTENCY OF AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF HARUNGANA MADAGASCARIENSIS STEM BARK AGAINST ISOPROTERENOL-INDUCED MYOCARDIAL DAMAGE IN RATS
2018
Objectives: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of Harungana madagascariensis on electrocardiographical, biochemical and histopathological changes in isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial infarction in rats. Methods: Male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided and treated with the aqueous extract of Harungana madagascariensis stem bark (AEHM, 200 and 400 mg/kg per os), or normal saline or vitamin E for 7 days with concomitant administration of ISO (85 mg/kg, subcutaneously) on 8th and 9th days, at 24 h interval. Results: The ISO injections to the rats caused cardiac dysfunction evidenced by a marked (P<0.01) elevation in ST-segment, a reduction in R wave amplitude (P…
Encapsulation of Vitamins A and E as Spray-Dried Additives for the Feed Industry
2020
Encapsulated fat-soluble powders containing vitamin A (VA) and E (VE) were prepared as a feasible additive for extruded feed products. The effect of the encapsulating agents (Capsul-CAP®
Heart rate recovery after exercise and maximal oxygen uptake in sedentary patients with type 2 diabetes
2015
Aims: Heart rate recovery after exercise (HRR) is an estimate of autonomic modulation of the heart, and has been shown to be inversely associated with insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes [1]. Type 2 diabetes is associated with poor exercise tolerance and maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max) [2]. Aim of our study was to assess the relationship between HRR and VO2max in sedentary patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Maximal treadmill exercise testing using standard or modified Bruce protocol was performed in 16 (8 males and 8 females) sedentary patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), and in 16 (9 males and 7 females) age-matched sedentary non-diabetic controls (ND). HRR (…
Phosphorus-Chalcogen Ring Expansion and Metal Coordination
2017
The reactivity of 4-membered (RPCh)2 rings (Ch = S, Se) that contain phosphorus in the +3 oxidation state is reported. These compounds undergo ring expansion to (RPCh)3 with the addition of a Lewis base. The 6-membered rings were found to be more stable than the 4-membered precursors, and the mechanism of their formation was investigated experimentally and by density functional theory calculations. The computational work identified two plausible mechanisms involving a phosphinidene chalcogenide intermediate, either as a free species or stabilized by a suitable base. Both the 4- and 6-membered rings were found to react with coinage metals, giving the same products: (RPCh)3 rings bound to the…
Cobalt, copper and zinc octacarboxyphthalocyanine activity in anaerobic oxidation of -SH group containing compounds
2007
Wykonano serię pomiarów elektrochemicznych w celu określenia aktywności katalitycznej oktakarboksyftalocyjaniny kobaltu, cynku i miedzi w anaerobowym utlenianiu związków organicznych zawierających grupę-SH. Badano następujące substraty: 2-tioetanol (TE), L-cysteinę i 1,4-ditio-2,3-butanodiol (DTT).
Biotic oxidation of methane in landfills in boreal climatic conditions
2010
This study focused on the biotic oxidation of methane in landfill covers as a technology for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from landfills, particularly those located in the boreal climatic zone. First, methane oxidation was studied in laboratory batch assays in a landfill cover soil consisting of a composted mixture of sewage sludge and chemical sludge which had been installed on the landfill surface 4-5 years earlier. Second, methane oxidation was studied using mechanically-biologically treated municipal solid waste (MBT residual) as a material for methane-oxidizing landfill covers both in continuously methane-sparged laboratory columns and in an outdoor pilot lysimeter. Finally, meth…
Soils as natural filters for GHG: an imbalance between the expected CH4 fluxes and the direct measurements
2018
The final composition of the atmosphere results from several processes and exchanges between all the Earth’s spheres. Some of these are widely known and others, such as the methane degassing from hydrothermal areas, are still understudied. Methane plays a key role in climate change being an efficient greenhouse gas. Although it would be crucial, the total CH4 output from geogenic sources is still not well defined; limitations in CH4 output estimations are due to many factors concerning a scarce dataset availability, difficulty in direct measurements, and interaction with methane-consuming microbiota in the soil. Often, the CH4 flux estimation was obtained indirectly, e.g. cross-correlating …
Chemical-Based Methodologies to Extend the Shelf Life of Fresh Fish—A Review
2021
Due to its characteristics, fresh fish is a highly perishable food with a very short shelf-life under refrigeration. Several methods have been introduced to slow down its deterioration, such as by means of oxygen depletion of the food package (vacuum packaging), or by changing the natural atmosphere that is in contact with the fresh fish (modified atmosphere packaging), or by the use of chemicals generally recognized as safe: such compounds can be directly applied (by dipping or spraying) or incorporated into packaging materials and slowly migrate to the product, exerting a hurdle effect against microbial development and lipid oxidation (active packaging). This review aims to cover the most…
Chemoselective, Substrate-directed Fluorination of Functionalized Cyclopentane β-Amino Acids
2016
This work describes a substrate-directed fluorination of some highly functionalized cyclopentane derivatives. The cyclic products incorporating CH2 F or CHF2 moieties in their structure have been synthesized from diexo- or diendo-norbornene β-amino acids following a stereocontrolled strategy. The synthetic study was based on an oxidative transformation of the ring carbon-carbon double bond of the norbornene β-amino acids, followed by transformation of the resulted "all cis" and "trans" diformyl intermediates by fluorination with "chemodifferentiation".
Oxygen Atom Transfer Catalysis by Dioxidomolybdenum(VI) Complexes of Pyridyl Aminophenolate Ligands
2021
A series of new cationic dioxidomolybdenum(VI) complexes [MoO2(Ln)]PF6 (2-5) with the tripodal tetradentate pyridyl aminophenolate ligands HL2-HL5 have been synthesized and characterized. Ligands HL2-HL4 carry substituents in the 4-position of the phenolate ring, viz. Cl, Br and NO2, respectively, whereas the ligand HL5, N-(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylbenzyl)-N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine, is a derivative of 3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylaldehyde. X-ray crystal structures of complexes 2, 3 and 5 reveal that they have a distorted octahedral geometry with the bonding parameters around the metal centres being practically similar. Stoichiometric oxygen atom transfer (OAT) properties of 5 with PPh3 wer…
