Ionic conductivity of nanocrystalline heavily acceptor doped ceria: The role of the local atomic order
2014
Acceptor doped ceria (CeO2) is a material that over the years has attracted much interest for applications in solid oxide fuel cells and oxygen membranes. This study aims at systematically investigating how the local atomic order and the dopant distribution affect the ionic transport of nanocrystalline CeO2 ceramics doped with samarium, erbium and ytterbium, with concentrations ranging between 10 and 30 at.%. For this purpose, a.c. electrochemical impedance spectroscopy together with Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as XRD and EXAFS analysis have been carried out. In order to have detailed information on the bulk properties of these compositions also microcrystalline samples have…

Comparative study of the effectiveness of a low-pressure hyperbaric oxygen treatment and physical exercise in women with fibromyalgia: randomized cli…
2020
Background: Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by chronic pain and fatigue, among other manifestations, thus advising interventions that do not aggravate these symptoms. The main purpose of this study is to analyse the effect of low-pressure hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on induced fatigue, pain, endurance and functional capacity, physical performance and cortical excitability when compared with a physical exercise program in women with FM. Methods: A total of 49 women with FM took part in this randomized controlled trial. They were randomly allocated to three groups: physical exercise group (PEG, n = 16), low-pressure hyperbaric oxygen therapy group (HBG, n = 17) and control group (CG, …
Assembly and functioning of endophytic bacterial communities in arcto-alpine pioneer plant Oxyria digyna
2019
Plant microbiomes consist of diverse communities of microorganisms, among which bacteria are highly abundant. The microbiomes are crucial for plants as they rely on their microbial associates for many essential functions. The goal of this thesis was to study the functional diversity and assembly rules of endophytic bacterial communities in different plant tissues of the arcto-alpine pioneer plant species, Oxyria digyna. I used high-throughput sequencing and bacterial isolations to characterize the endophytic communities in the leaves and roots of native O. digyna plants (wild plants) and micropropagated aseptic plants (bait plants) in the field. Wild plants and tissue-propagated bait plants…
Possible influence of Zoophycos bioturbation on radiocarbon dating and environmental interpretation
2002
Abstract In paleoenvironmental studies of marine sediments bioturbation is often neglected and/or only treated as a diffusion-like process affecting only the uppermost sediment with decreasing intensity with depth. Deep dwelling animals, like the Zoophycos producing animal, however, affect the sediment composition by transporting material over vertical distances of up to 1 m below the seafloor. In Arabian Sea sediment cores 70KL, 64KL and 57KL a significant downward transport of particles by Zoophycos can be observed. Within the Zoophycos burrows the faunal composition of both planktonic and benthic foraminiferal assemblages as well as the isotopic signature of foraminiferal carbonate diffe…

Sodium oxybate therapy for the treatment of alcohol withdrawal syndrome and the maintenance of alcohol abstinence
2017
Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB or sodium oxybate) is both an exogenous and endogenous molecule with neuromodulator properties. In the United States, GHB is an approved drug for the treatment of narcolepsy and narcolepsy with cataplexy in adults. In some European Union countries, sodium oxybate is applied for the treatment of opioid and alcohol withdrawal.
Protecting from Oxygen (and from other gases)
2016
As mentioned in previous chapters, the benefits provided by innovation in the paper and board business are connected with the possible chemical modification of fibres, with coupling with other materials (composites), as well as with special surface treatments. Today paper and board can substitute polymers by virtue of their enhanced ability to act as barriers to gases, while displaying an active, antimicrobial, photocatalytic, etc. behaviour. The desired barrier effect is primarily against oxygen. Considerable interest was aroused in the past by substances like artificial or natural antioxidant additives, capable to act as a barrier to oxygen by preventing its action, as well as by solution…
