AN OBJECT ORIENTED MODEL FOR SCHEDULING IN AGILE MANUFACTURING

2002

Agility represents a key factor in industry to handle the continuous market changes. Companies must re-organize their activities to be agile and competitive in such a dynamic environment. In particular, production planning and control tools are very important to optimize the manufacturing process responsiveness to sudden changes in customer demand. In this paper, an attempt has been made to develop an object-oriented software architecture that allows the optimal line organization to be determined once a set of parts to be produced has been ordered. An optimization module represented by a simulated annealing algorithm has been interfaced with an object oriented architecture to build up a fr…

Simple absorbing layer conditions for shallow wave simulations with Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

2013

Abstract We study and implement a simple method, based on the Perfectly Matched Layer approach, to treat non reflecting boundary conditions with the Smoothed Particles Hydrodynamics numerical algorithm. The method is based on the concept of physical damping operating on a fictitious layer added to the computational domain. The method works for both 1D and 2D cases, but here we illustrate it in the case of 1D and 2D time dependent shallow waves propagating in a finite domain.

Covariant description of kinetic freeze out through a finite space-like layer

2005

The problem of Freeze Out (FO) in relativistic heavy ion reactions is addressed. We develop and analyze an idealized one-dimensional model of FO in a finite layer, based on the covariant FO probability. The resulting post FO phase-space distributions are discussed for different FO probabilities and layer thicknesses.

Automatic Detection of Hemangioma through a Cascade of Self-organizing Map Clustering and Morphological Operators

2016

Abstract In this paper we propose a method for the automatic detection of hemangioma regions, consisting of a cascade of algorithms: a Self Organizing Map (SOM) for clustering the image pixels in 25 classes (using a 5x5 output layer) followed by a morphological method of reducing the number of classes (MMRNC) to only two classes: hemangioma and non-hemangioma. We named this method SOM-MMRNC. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method we have used Fuzzy C-means (FCM) for comparison. The algorithms were tested on 33 images; for most images, the proposed method and FCM obtain similar overall scores, within one percent of each other. However, in about 18% of the cases, there is a signif…

Hierarchies of Self-Organizing Maps for action recognition

2016

We propose a hierarchical neural architecture able to recognise observed human actions. Each layer in the architecture represents increasingly complex human activity features. The first layer consists of a SOM which performs dimensionality reduction and clustering of the feature space. It represents the dynamics of the stream of posture frames in action sequences as activity trajectories over time. The second layer in the hierarchy consists of another SOM which clusters the activity trajectories of the first-layer SOM and learns to represent action prototypes. The third - and last - layer of the hierarchy consists of a neural network that learns to label action prototypes of the second-laye…

Setpoints compensation in industrial processes via multirate output feedback control

2013

This paper investigates the setpoints compensation for a class of complex industrial processes. Plants at the device layer are controlled by the local regulation controllers, and a multirate output feedback control approach for setpoint compensation is proposed such that the subsystems can reach the dynamically changed setpoints and the given economic objective can also be tracked via certain economic performance index (EPI). First, a sampled-data multivariable direct output feedback proportional integral (PI) controller is designed to regulate the performance of the subsystems. Second, the outputs and control inputs of the plants at the device layer are sampled at operation layer sampling …

Video object recognition and modeling by SIFT matching optimization

2014

In this paper we present a novel technique for object modeling and object recognition in video. Given a set of videos containing 360 degrees views of objects we compute a model for each object, then we analyze short videos to determine if the object depicted in the video is one of the modeled objects. The object model is built from a video spanning a 360 degree view of the object taken against a uniform background. In order to create the object model, the proposed techniques selects a few representative frames from each video and local features of such frames. The object recognition is performed selecting a few frames from the query video, extracting local features from each frame and looki…

Understanding the Environment through Wireless Sensor Networks

2007

This paper presents a new cognitive architecture for extracting meaningful, high-level information from the environment, starting from the raw data collected by a Wireless Sensor Network. The proposed framework is capable of building rich internal representation of the sensed environment by means of intelligent data processing and correlation. Furthermore, our approach aims at integrating the connectionist, data-driven model with the symbolic one, that uses a high-level knowledge about the domain to drive the environment interpretation. To this aim, the framework exploits the notion of conceptual spaces, adopting a conceptual layer between the subsymbolic one, that processes sensory data, a…

Sub-Symbolic Knowledge Representation for Evocative Chat-Bots

2008

A sub-symbolic knowledge representation oriented to the enhancement of chat bot interaction is proposed. The result of the technique is the introduction of a semantic sub-symbolic layer to a traditional ontology-based knowledge representation. This layer is obtained mapping the ontology concepts into a semantic space built through Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) technique and it is embedded into a conversational agent. This choice leads to a chat-bot with “evocative” capabilities whose knowledge representation framework is composed of two areas: the rational and the evocative one. As a standard ontology we have chosen the well-founded WordNet lexical dictionary, while as chat-bot the ALICE a…

Enabling Technologies on Hybrid Camera Networks for Behavioral Analysis of Unattended Indoor Environments and Their Surroundings

2008

This paper presents a layered network architecture and the enabling technologies for accomplishing vision-based behavioral analysis of unattended environments. Specifically the vision network covers both the attended environment and its surroundings by means of multi-modal cameras. The layer overlooking at the surroundings is laid outdoor and tracks people, monitoring entrance/exit points. It recovers the geometry of the site under surveillance and communicates people positions to a higher level layer. The layer monitoring the unattended environment undertakes similar goals, with the addition of maintaining a global mosaic of the observed scene for further understanding. Moreover, it merges …
