Experimental results for two-particle break-up
1991
In this section we shall review the present status of experiments on two-body photo-disintegration of deuteron up to and above the Δ region. The results of different experiments will be discussed and a guideline will be given for a selection of the experiments to be used in the comparison of experimental data with theoretical results. Moreover, since a large variety of observables exists, which have been studied experimentally, we shall discuss which kind of measured quantities, having a smaller systematic error, can give more accurate information.
A new observable to measure the top-quark mass at hadron colliders
2013
A new method to measure the top-quark mass in high energetic hadron collisions is presented. We use theoretical predictions calculated at next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics to study the ( normalized) differential distribution of the t (t) over bar + 1-jet cross section with respect to its invariant mass root s(t (t) over barj). The sensitivity of the method to the top-quark mass together with the impact of various theoretical and experimental uncertainties has been investigated and quantified. The new method allows for a complementary measurement of the top-quark mass parameter and has a high potential to become competitive in precision with respect to established appr…
Fractional frequency collective parametric resonances of an ion cloud in a Paul trap
1998
ion cloud ina Paul trap driven at simple fractions of twice the secular frequency of the trap by an additionally appliedquadrupole field. The fractional resonances are observable only if the excitation field surpasses a criticalstrength. Odd-even staggering of the thresholds is observed.@S1050-2947~98!51307-8#PACS number~s!: 32.80.Pj, 07.75.1h

Toeholds and takeover probability: implications for investment strategies
2009
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to propose various toehold indicators and analyse whether the models incorporating these indicators can be used to establish investment strategies.Design/methodology/approachLogistic regression is used to test toehold indicator significance.FindingsThe results reflect that the designed measures are positively correlated to the likelihood of launching a takeover, although the power of the models to predict out‐sample takeovers is moderate, between 60.71 percent and 71.59 percent. The indicators allow us to design strategies which offer positive abnormal returns. In particular, abnormal return over the Fama‐French factors is 0.5 percent.Originality/valueToe…
Asymptotic observer of the link states of flexible joint robots with motor-side sensing
2015
This paper proposes an approach for observing the link states, i.e. angular position and velocity, of the robotic joints with elasticities, when only the motor-side sensing is available. By separating the state-dependent nonlinearities of the rigid manipulator dynamics a linear sub-model of the elastic joint robot is obtained in an observable state-space form. The standard asymptotic Luenberger state observer is then designed for the given motor position signal which is measured by encoder and rectified from the nonlinear contribution. The configurable poles of observer allow shaping the estimated states dynamics to be fast enough in relation to the actual resonant joint behavior. Therefore…
Observational constraints on inhomogeneous cosmological models without dark energy
2011
It has been proposed that the observed dark energy can be explained away by the effect of large-scale nonlinear inhomogeneities. In the present paper we discuss how observations constrain cosmological models featuring large voids. We start by considering Copernican models, in which the observer is not occupying a special position and homogeneity is preserved on a very large scale. We show how these models, at least in their current realizations, are constrained to give small, but perhaps not negligible in certain contexts, corrections to the cosmological observables. We then examine non-Copernican models, in which the observer is close to the center of a very large void. These models can gi…
Observable Streaming Potential in Membranes
2003
Theories describing the electrokinetic processes in membranes usually involve nonobservable variables. One of these phenomena is the streaming potential, i.e., the electric potential generated by a pressure difference imposed across the membrane system. In this work the streaming potential is successfully described by using observable variables in the framework of thermodynamics of irreversible processes. The observable electric potential is the central quantity of the transport equations. The relaxation with time of this electric potential difference is well explained by the solute flux in these transport equations. The fluxes and forces defined in the formulation permit one to analyze the…
Interpretation of the depths of maximum of extensive air showers measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory
2013
To interpret the mean depth of cosmic ray air shower maximum and its dispersion, we parametrize those two observables as functions of the first two moments of the ln A distribution. We examine the goodness of this simple method through simulations of test mass distributions. The application of the parameterization to Pierre Auger Observatory data allows one to study the energy dependence of the mean ln A and of its variance under the assumption of selected hadronic interaction models. We discuss possible implications of these dependences in term of interaction models and astrophysical cosmic ray sources.
An Observation Framework for Multi-Agent Systems
2009
Existing middleware platforms for multi-agent systems (MAS) do not provide general support for observation. On the other hand, observation is considered to be an important mechanism needed for realizing effective and efficient coordination of agents. This paper describes a framework called Agent Observable Environment (AOE) for observation-based interaction in MAS. The framework provides 1) possibility to model MAS components with RDFbased observable soft-bodies, 2) support for both query and publish/subscribe style ontology-driven observation, and 3) ability to restrict the visibility of observable information using observation rules. Additionally, we report on an implementation of the fra…
