Progress of instability in fragility fractures of the pelvis: An observational study.
2019
Abstract Fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFP) are an increasing entity among elderly persons. Characteristics are different from high-energy pelvic trauma. Little is known about the natural course of FFP in conservative and after operative treatment. Materials and methods Medical charts and radiologic data of 148 patients with an FFP, who were admitted in a 3-year period, were analysed retrospectively. Incidence and characteristics of fracture progression (FP) were noted. Results Patients presenting early after a traumatic event had more often non-displaced fractures, fractures with lower FFP Type classification and were more frequently treated conservatively. FP was observed in 21 cases…
Hospital admissions for acute myocardial infarction before and after lockdown according to regional prevalence of COVID-19 and patient profile in Fra…
2020
Background The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound effect on general health care. We aimed to evaluate the effect of a nationwide lockdown in France on admissions to hospital for acute myocardial infarction, by patient characteristics and regional prevalence of the pandemic. Methods In this registry study, we collected data from 21 centres participating in the ongoing French Cohort of Myocardial Infarction Evaluation (FRENCHIE) registry, which collects data from all patients admitted for ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) or non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) within 48 h of symptom onset. We analysed weekly hospital admissions over 8 weeks: the 4 weeks …
Physicians' guideline adherence is associated with long-term heart failure mortality in outpatients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction…
2019
Background Physicians’ adherence to guideline-recommended therapy is associated with short-term clinical outcomes in heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). However, its impact on longer-term outcomes is poorly documented. In this analysis we assessed the longer-term association of physicians’ adherence with clinical outcomes, including mortality and unplanned hospitalisations, at 18-month follow-up of the QUALIFY registry (Clinical trial registration ISRCTN87465420) Method and results Data at 18 months were available for 6118 ambulatory HFrEF patients from this international prospective observational survey. Adherence was measured as a continuous variable, ranging from 0…
#patientstoo - Professional sexual misconduct by healthcare professionals towards patients: a representative study.
2021
Abstract Aims Sexual border violations are a severe problem in the healthcare system. Studies using non-probability samples indicate a high prevalence of professional sexual misconduct (PSM) towards patients. However, valid prevalence rates are lacking. Methods We did a cross-sectional, observational study in Germany from February to April 2020. By different sampling steps, a probability sample of the German population above the age of 14 was generated. The final sample consisted 2503 persons (50.2% female, mean age: 49.5 years). Participants were asked about sexual contacts with and sexual harassment by healthcare professionals. Using descriptive statistics, prevalence rates of PSM were es…
Frequency of Renal Dysfunction and Frailty in Patients ≥80 Years of Age With Acute Coronary Syndromes.
2019
While a significant association between renal function and outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) has been consistently described, little information exists about the magnitude of this association in patients at older ages. No study assessed the prognostic role of renal function according to frailty in patients with ACS. The LONGEVO-SCA registry included unselected ACS patients aged≥80 years. Frailty was asessesed by the FRAIL scale, and baseline creatinine clearance was calculated by the Cockroff-Gault formula. We evaluated the impact of renal function on mortality or readmission at 6-months according to frailty status by the Cox regression method. A total of 473 patients…
First Experiences With the Ponto⢢ SuperPower Osseointegrated Device
2018
Osseointegrated hearing devices Power and SuperPower present indications for bone thresholds of 55 and 65 dB respectively. We conducted a prospective observational study of a series of six cases with mixed hearing loss for whom implantation of the DAO Ponto™ Super-Power was performed. Tonal and verbal evaluations without and with background noise (HINTS) were performed prior to implantation and six months after adaptation. All the participants showed improvement in tonal and verbal results, varying according to the degree of contralateral hearing loss. The verbal results with background noise were noteworthy, where most of the patients obtained a signal-to-noise ratio between 2 and 4 dB. Th…
Influenza Vaccination After Myocardial Infarction:A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Multicenter Trial
2021
Background: Observational and small, randomized studies suggest that influenza vaccine may reduce future cardiovascular events in patients with cardiovascular disease. Methods: We conducted an investigator-initiated, randomized, double-blind trial to compare inactivated influenza vaccine with saline placebo administered shortly after myocardial infarction (MI; 99.7% of patients) or high-risk stable coronary heart disease (0.3%). The primary end point was the composite of all-cause death, MI, or stent thrombosis at 12 months. A hierarchical testing strategy was used for the key secondary end points: all-cause death, cardiovascular death, MI, and stent thrombosis. Results: Because of the COV…
Inverse association between habitual polyphenol intake and incidence of cardiovascular events in the PREDIMED study
2014
Background and aims: Epidemiologic and biological evidence supports an inverse association between polyphenol consumption and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, no previous studies have prospectively evaluated the relationship between polyphenol intake and the incidence of CVD in such a comprehensive way. The aim was to evaluate the association between intakes of total polyphenol and polyphenol subgroups, and the risk of major cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction, stroke or death from cardiovascular causes) in the PREDIMED study. Methods and results: The present work is an observational study within the PREDIMED trial. Over an average of 4.3 years of follow-up, there…
Pulmonary embolism in Europe - Burden of illness in relationship to healthcare resource utilization and return to work.
2018
Objectives\ud Pulmonary embolism (PE) is associated with a substantial economic burden. However evidence from patients in Europe is scarce. The aim of this study was to report the impacts of PE on healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and return to work using the PREFER in VTE registry.\ud \ud Methods\ud The PREFER in VTE registry was a prospective, observational, multicenter study in seven European countries, aiming to provide data concerning treatment patterns, HCRU, mortality, quality of life and work-loss. Patients with a first-time or recurrent PE were included and followed up at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. Treatment patterns, re-hospitalization rates, length of hospital stays (LOS), and a…
Remission phase in children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in years 2012 to 2013 in Silesia, Poland: An observational study
2018
Background/objective The study aimed to analyze the frequency of partial remission (PR) and its association with chosen clinical and laboratory factors among pediatric patients with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes (T1D). The long-term effect of PR on chosen parameters was also investigated. Methods In 194 patients (95 girls) aged 8.1 ± 4.3 years, we analyzed data at T1D onset: glycemia, pH, C-peptide, antibodies, weight, and concomitant autoimmune diseases. Anthropometric parameters, daily insulin requirement (DIR), and HbA1c 2 and 4 years after T1D diagnosis were also analyzed. We determined PR based on HbA1c and DIR measurements at least every 3 months. Results PR occurred in 59% of patie…
