Symptomatic COVID-19 in advanced-cancer patients treated with immune-checkpoint inhibitors. Prospective analysis from a multicentre observational tri…
2020
Background:This prospective, multicentre, observational INVIDIa-2 study is investigating the clinical efficacy of influenza vaccination in advanced-cancer patients receiving immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), enrolled in 82 Italian centres, from October 2019 to January 2020. The primary endpoint was the incidence of influenza-like illness (ILI) until 30 April 2020. All the ILI episodes, laboratory tests, complications, hospitalizations and pneumonitis were recorded. Therefore, the study prospectively recorded all the COVID-19 ILI events.Patients and methods:Patients were included in this non-prespecified COVID-19 analysis, if alive on 31 January 2020, when the Italian government declared …
Return to Sports and Recreational Activity After Single-Stage Bilateral Short-Stem Total Hip Arthroplasty: 5-Year Results of a Prospective Observatio…
2019
Background:Single-stage bilateral total hip arthroplasty (THA) is an alternative to staged unilateral THA in patients suffering from bilateral hip arthritis; however, there is still broad concern regarding the safety and reliability of this procedure. Short-stem THA has emerged in recent years. To date, no data are available on sports and recreational activity levels after single-stage bilateral short-stem THA in the general patient population.Hypothesis:Patients who have undergone single-stage bilateral short-stem THA return to a satisfying level of sports and recreational activity at midterm follow-up.Study Design:Case series; Level of evidence, 4.Methods:A total of 54 consecutive patient…
Client’s role and participation in stroke physiotherapy encounters: an observational study
2016
AbstractClient participation is a basic principle in rehabilitation encounters. Coping at home after stroke requires self-confidence and autonomy, which can be enhanced by active collaboration and knowledge sharing. Earlier studies show, however, that clients are not always offered the role of an active participant in physiotherapy practice. A contradiction remains between official rhetoric and clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to investigate the interaction between the client and the physiotherapist in stroke rehabilitation sessions. Eight video-recorded treatment sessions were observed after an educational intervention that focused on client participation. Discourse analysi…
Gross motor proficiency and intellectual functioning
2018
This cross-sectional study examines differences in gross motor proficiency as a function of different intellectual functioning profiles. Two motor areas have been investigated as being equally essential to gross motor functions in every-day life: locomotion and object control. It aims to compare gross motor skills endorsed by children with Down syndrome (DS), children with borderline intellectual functioning (BIF), and typically developing children (TDC). Group 1 was composed of 18 children with DS (chronological age=8.22), group 2 was composed of 18 children with BIF (chronological age=9.32), and group 3 was composed of 18 children with typical development (TD) (chronological age=9.28). Gr…
Motivational strategies, working alliance, and protherapeutic behaviors in batterer intervention programs: A randomized controlled trial
2020
ABSTRACT Motivational strategies are among the most promising approaches to improve the effectiveness of batterer intervention programs (BIPs). An individualized motivational plan (IMP) is one of these motivational strategies. The present study aimed to explore whether adding an IMP to a standard BIP improved the participant-facilitator working alliance and participants' protherapeutic behaviors. To this end a randomized controlled trial was conducted. One hundred fifty-three men convicted of intimate partner violence were randomly assigned to either a standard BIP (control condition, n = 79) or a standard BIP plus IMP (experimental condition, n = 74). Working alliance (i.e., general workin…
Association of parental communication deviance with offspring's psychiatric and thought disorders. A systematic review and meta-analysis.
2013
AbstractElevated number of parental Communication Deviance (CD) has been connected with psychiatric and thought disorders in their offspring. However, no earlier systematic efforts have been made to review this issue. The aim of this study was to survey the existing literature systematically and perform a meta-analysis of this association. A literature search for published and unpublished observational studies on the association of parental Communication Deviance with psychopathology in the offspring was conducted. Multiple electronic databases were searched (from 1960 to 2012) and the reference lists of the resulting publications were scanned. The findings were pooled using random effect m…
Visual, Verbal and Everyday Memory 2 Years After Bariatric Surgery: Poorer Memory Performance at 1-Year Follow-Up
2021
Severe obesity has been associated with reduced performance on tests of verbal memory in bariatric surgery candidates. There is also some evidence that bariatric surgery leads to improved verbal memory, yet these findings need further elucidation. Little is known regarding postoperative memory changes in the visual domain and how patients subjectively experience their everyday memory after surgery. The aim of the current study was to repeat and extend prior findings on postoperative memory by investigating visual, verbal, and self-reported everyday memory following surgery, and to examine whether weight loss and somatic comorbidity predict memory performance. The study was a prospective, ob…
Case study on teachers’ contribution to children’s participation in Finnish preschool classrooms during structured learning sessions
2013
The main aim of this study was to identify different teaching practices and explore the types of opportunities that they provide for children’s participation in four different Finnish preschool classrooms for 6-year olds during structured learning sessions. Observational data of four preschool teachers were analyzed according to the principles of qualitative content analysis. Three themes of teachers’ practices were identified, which described the key practices through which teachers influence children’s participation, namely, through discussion and conversations; by referring to shared rules and managing the classroom; and through demonstrating pedagogical sensitivity and understanding tow…

A controlled clinical study of periodontal health in anticoagulated patients : assessment of bleeding on probing
2017
Background According to the Spanish Society of Cardiology, 700,000 patients receive oral anticoagulants, and in these cases bleeding on probing (BOP) could be altered. However, no studies have analyzed the periodontal status of these patients and the effects anticoagulants may have upon BOP. A study was made of the possible relationship between plaque index, probing depth, INR (International Normalized Ratio) and acenocoumarol dose versus the clinical signs of BOP in a sample of anticoagulated patients. Likewise, an analysis was made of oral hygiene habits and attitude towards bleeding in these patients. Material and Methods A controlled observational clinical study was made in La Ribera Ho…
