Brain BDNF Levels Elevation Induced by Physical Training is Reduced after Unilateral Common Carotid Artery Occlusion in Rats

2014

International audience; We investigated the contribution of blood flow elevation in the cerebrovasculature to physical training-induced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels elevation in the brain. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor protein levels were measured in the motor cortex 24 h after the last session of a forced treadmill walking (30 minutes a day, 18 m/minute for 7 consecutive days). Unilateral common carotid artery occlusion and modulation of exercise intensity (0 versus -10% inclination of the treadmill) were used as strategies to reduce the (normal) elevation of flow in the cerebrovasculature occurring during exercise. Administration of N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (…

Color Doppler Imaging of Arterial Blood Flow in Central Retinal Vein Occlusion

1994

Purpose: The hemodynamics of the retrobulbar arterial circulation of patients with central retinal vein occlusion were evaluated in order to better understand the pathophysiology of this disease. Methods: Color Doppler imaging was used to measure the peak systolic velocity and vascular resistance (pulsatility index) in the retrobulbar arteries of involved eyes and clinically healthy fellow eyes of patients with central retinal vein occlusion and in the control eyes of age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers. Results: Average peak systolic velocity was significantly lower and average vascular resistance was significantly higher in the central retinal artery of involved eyes of patients with …

A new model of thromboembolic stroke in the posterior circulation of the rat

2006

The prognosis of vertebrobasilar occlusion is grave and therapeutic options are limited. The aim of the present study was to develop a new model of embolic hindbrain ischemia in the rat that closely resembles the clinical situation and that can be used to study pathophysiology and treatment options. After thoracotomy in 20 male Wistar rats, 15 animals received an injection of in vitro prepared autologous blood clots into the left vertebral artery. Five animals without clot injection served as controls. Neurological deficits were assessed in all animals 2 h after embolism. After 2 h, five animals were sacrificed to measure cerebral blood flow (CBF) by iodo-antipyridine autoradiography, and t…

Definitions and Clinical Trial Design Principles for Coronary Artery Chronic Total Occlusion Therapies: CTO-ARC Consensus Recommendations.

2021

Over the past 2 decades, chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention has developed into its own subspecialty of interventional cardiology. Dedicated terminology, techniques, devices, courses, and training programs have enabled progressive advancements. However, only a few randomized trials have been performed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of CTO percutaneous coronary intervention. Moreover, several published observational studies have shown conflicting data. Part of the paucity of clinical data stems from the fact that prior studies have been suboptimally designed and performed. The absence of standardized end points and the discrepancy in definitions also prevent…

Cinical outcomes of Endurant II stent-graft for infrarenal aortic aneurysm repair: comparison of on-label versus off-label use.

2016

Purpose We aimed to compare the outcomes of the Endurant II (Medtronic) stent-graft used under instructions for use versus off-label in high-risk patients considered unfit for conventional surgery. Methods Data from patients treated with the Endurant II stent-graft between December 2012 and March 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. Sixty-four patients were included. Patients were assigned to group A if treated under instructions for use (n=34, 53%) and to group B if treated off-label (n=30, 47%). Outcome measures included perioperative mortality and morbidity, survival, freedom from reintervention, endoleak incidence, in-hospital length of stay, and mean stent-graft component used. Mean fol…

Effect of Glutathione on Canine Myocardial Ischaemia Without Reperfusion

1993

Abstract The present study was to evaluate the effect of exogenous glutathione on myocardial damage resulting from permanent (no reperfusion) coronary ligation (3 or 6 h) in anaesthetized dogs. Haemodynamics, infarct size and myocardial glutathione content were determined. Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was also determined in coronary venous blood samples. Glutathione was administered by the intraperitoneal route, 100 mg kg−1 as initial dose given 5 min before coronary ligation, and successive doses of 25 mg kg−1 every 40 min throughout the study period. Saline-treated dogs showed myocardial infarction, a decrease in myocardial glutathione content, and a transient increase …

Branch retinal vein occlusion associated with the 20210 G-to-A prothrombin variant.

2000

Purpose To describe a case of branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) in a patient who tested positive for the 20210 A allele of the prothrombin (PT) gene. Methods A 48-year-old man had visual loss in the right eye secondary to BRVO confirmed by ophthalmoscopy and fluorescein angiography. His medical history was not remarkable for common risk factors for retinal occlusive diseases. Results Laboratory tests for hypercoagulability were positive for PT 20210 A variant. The patient's family tested negative for the PT variant. Conclusions Laboratory tests for coagulopathy, including the PT 20210 A variant, should be added to the examination of patients with central or BRVO, especially if most commo…

Delayed and incomplete treatment may result in dural fistula development in children with Vein of Galen malformation

2017

The association of dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVF) in children with Vein of Galen malformation (VGM) has recently been reported for the first time. In a larger series of cases treated with transarterial NBCA embolization, 30% had DAVF. We wanted to analyze the development of DAVF in our cohort of children with VGM and to evaluate whether their occurrence depends on different treatment timing and embolic materials. We analyzed 43 VGM cases treated with a combined transarterial and transvenous approach between 2003 and 2016. In our early series until 2011, we used coils solely in 21 children. Since 2012, 22 children were treated with the combination of coils and Onyx. In the early series…

Prognostic value of exercise myocardial scintigraphy in patients with coronary chronic total occlusions.

2010

Objectives: To evaluate the prognostic value of exercise myocardial scintigraphy in patients undergoing incomplete revascularization by means of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with at least a residual chronic total occlusion (CTO) left untreated. Methods: Of 569 consecutive patients with multivessel disease undergoing myocardial scintigraphy after incomplete revascularization by PCI between March 1997 and December 2004, 126 (79% male, 64 ± 10 years) with ≥ 1 residual CTO fulfilled the eligibility criteria and entered in the study. Hard events defined as cardiac death and myocardial infarction, soft events defined as incidence of unstable angina and PCI procedures, and their compos…

The sensorimotor and cognitive deficits in rats following 90- and 120-min transient occlusion of the middle cerebral artery

2012

Middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) is the most commonly used method to study the neurological and histological outcomes and the pathological mechanisms of ischaemic stroke. The current work compares sensorimotor and cognitive deficits and the infarct volume in rats following a transient 90- or 120-min MCAO, which allows the appropriate behavioural tests to be chosen based on the goal and design of the experiment. In the beam-walking test, we found significant differences between the 90- and 120-min MCAO groups in the number of foot faults made with the impaired hindlimb on post-stroke days 3, 7 and 14. In the cylinder test, a difference between the 90- and 120-min groups was observed o…
