Barriers in access to cancer treatment in Europe: a systematic review of the European Literature
2020
Abstract Background Within NCD`s, Cancer accounts for the 2nd most frequent cause after Cardiovascular diseases and in some European countries it´s the leading cause of premature deaths. One of the challenges within cancer therapy can be found in inequity in access to cancer treatment, because this causes worse health outcomes, which are attributable to the accessibility of health care and thus avoidable. The objective of the systematic review was to identify barriers in access to cancer treatment in Europe (inter-country) and within 6 European countries (intra-country): Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Finland, Bulgaria, UK. Methods To obtain data scientific (PubMed, CINAHL, Embase) and grey l…
Breakthrough Cancer Pain: Ten Commandments
2016
The term "breakthrough cancer pain" (BTcP) was introduced about 25 years ago. Peaks of pain intensity reported in patients with cancer had been invariably examined in the past years, providing relevant information for a better knowledge of this phenomenon and its treatment. The aim of this critical review was to provide the golden rules, namely, the 10 commandments, for a correct diagnostic pathway of BTcP and a consequent personalized pharmacological treatment. These are as follows: 1) assessment of background analgesia, 2) drugs used for background analgesia, 3) BTcP is a frequent phenomenon, 4) characteristics of BTcP, 5) diagnosis of BTcP, 6) continuous assessment, 7) tailored pharmacol…

Purpose: Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) positively influences bone mineral content (BMC) in prepubertal children, but it is unknown whether this relationship is partially mediated by free leptin index. The aim of this study was to examine whether the relationship between MVPA and total body less head (TBLH) BMC is mediated or moderated by free leptin index in prepubertal children. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis on 401 children (194 girls) from baseline examinations of the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Childhood Study. We applied the four-way decomposition mediation analysis method to assess whether free leptin index, measured from fasted blood samples, …
Incidence of mandibular fractures in eastern Libya
2009
The objective of this retrospective study is to evaluate the incidence of mandibular fractures in the eastern part of Libya and to present our experience in treating this type of facial fracture. We analyzed factors such as the incidence of age, sex, time distribution, cause and site of the fracture and the associated injuries in 493 patients presenting a total of 666 mandibular fractures. These patients were treated at Al-Jala Trauma Hospital, Benghazi-Libya between 2000 and 2006. The results were obtained from 432 males and 61 females, for which the ages ranged from 8 months to 72 years. The maximum number of the patients was recorded in 2004, and the busiest month was May. The most commo…

Long-term improvement of quality of life in adult ADHD – results of the randomized multimodal COMPAS trial
2021
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) negatively impacts Quality of Life (QoL) in adults. Earlier studies on pharmacological treatment have shown short-term beneficial effects on QoL. No data are available on long-term effects on multimodal psychosocial and/or pharmacological interventions. The Comparison of Methylphenidate and Psychotherapy in Adult ADHD Study (COMPAS), a prospective, multicenter randomized clinical trial, compared cognitive behavioral group psychotherapy (GPT) with individual clinical management (CM) and methylphenidate (MPH) with placebo (Plac) (2 × 2 factorial design over a period of 52 weeks). Change of QoL was measured after three months of intensive treatme…
