Changes in the frequency of the Weather Regimes over the Euro-Atlantic and Mediterranean sector and their relation to the anomalous temperatures over…
2013
19 pages; International audience; An exercise has been carried out to assess to what extent the Euro-Atlantic Weather Regimes (WR),described from the ERA-interim Reanalysis in the summer season, projects onto a pool of AGCMAMIPsimulations in which sea surface temperatures (SST) are prescribed from observations.Although the model simulations present some biases in the spatial structure and seasonality of WRs,exhibiting also less variability, they are able to capture main WR over the region in summer season:+Middle East –Middle East, +NAO, -NAO. WR paradigm is used to quantify changes in theatmosphere under warmer/colder than normal conditions over the Mediterranean Sea. To addressthis proble…
Soil microbial community fragmentation reveals indirect effects of pesticide application mediated through biotic interactions between taxa
2022
In soil ecosystems, microorganisms exist in complex and diverse communities where microbial taxa are linked through different types of interactions. Therefore, pesticide application will not only directly affect certain microbial taxa, but will also have indirect effects throughout the community mediated through these interactions. These indirect effects may also influence ecosystem functions. In this study, a naturally occurring soil microbial community was fragmented by filtering a soil suspension and inoculating sterile soil microcosms. The effect of the fungicide Hymexazol on community structure and function was tested on the separate fractions and on the unfragmented community after a …
Oxysterols – how much do we know about food occurrence, dietary intake and absorption?
2021
Oxysterols are formed in foods during processing and storage, having an impact on the nutritional profile besides being associated to the development of diverse chronic and degenerative diseases. This review provides an overview on recent information and knowledge gaps on oxysterol formation and absorption from foods. Their contents should be monitored based on dietary habits, in order to have more realistic data available and to expand the currently limited daily intake data. Unraveling the mechanism of oxysterol absorption, together with a more thorough understanding of their metabolism, is needed; in this respect, bioavailability studies using in vitro and in vivo methodologies could con…
Das Flüchtlingsproblem in ausgewählten Pressediskursen - gleich oder ungleich?
2020
This article presents the results of the analysis of three sets of texts concerning the issue of refugees in various periods of history. Their subject matter concerns Eastern refugees from the former German territories, the so-called refugees from GDR (East Germany) and modern international refugees. The purpose of this article is to find answers to the following questions: 1. How is the refugee problem linguistically expressed in the selected collection of texts? 2. What characteristics do newspapers give to refugees and how are they judged? 3. What differences and similarities can be observed in the description of the issues concerning refugees based on the selected collections of texts?
Co‐occurrence patterns in a steppe bird community: insights into the role of dominance and competition
2023
Spatial co-occurrence patterns are determined by environmental factors, such as food availability or habitat characteristics and by biotic associations. When resources are limited, competition which implies a dominant hierarchy can shape species assemblage. Here, we study space and time co-occurrence of steppe passerines during the breeding season in a natural steppe habitat, its modulation by environmental filtering, potential biotic interactions and random processes. We applied the joint species distribution model of hierarchical modelling of species community (HMSC) to data on species presence–absence and environmental, temporal and spatial covariates acquired from seven plots in a natur…

Biodiversity surveys of grassland and coastal habitats in 2021 as a documentation of pre-war status in southern Ukraine
2023
This paper presents two sampling-event datasets with occurrences of vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens collected in May-June 2021 in southern Ukraine. We aimed to collect high-quality biodiversity data in an understudied region and contribute it to international databases and networks. The study was carried out during the 15th Eurasian Dry Grassland Group (EDGG) Field Workshop in southern Ukraine and the Dark Diversity Network (DarkDivNet) sampling in the Kamianska Sich National Nature Park. By chance, these datasets were collected shortly before the major escalation of the Russian invasion in Ukraine. Surveyed areas in Kherson and Mykolaiv Regions, including established monitoring plo…
Radon measurements in the SE and NE flank of Mt. Etna (Italy)
2007
Abstract Soil Radon has been monitored at two fixed sites located in the northeastern and southeastern flank of Mt. Etna. In this study we report the comparison between in-soil Radon concentration trend recorded in the SE flank and that one recorded in the NE one, where an in-soil Radon detection system is operating since 2001. The aim of this work was to implement the investigation area finding a suitable radon detection site, in the south-east flank of Mt. Etna, in order to better understand possible links between Radon anomalies and volcano dynamic. Radon data collected in NE and SE sites were compared with the volcanic tremor, frequency of occurrence of earthquakes and seismic strain-re…
Electrofishing as a new method to search for unknown populations of the endangered freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera
2017
1. The freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera is threatened throughout its Holarctic range, but the occurrence of this species is insufficiently mapped. For the conservation of M. margaritifera, it is important to identify populations more comprehensively. 2. Traditionally mussels have been searched for visually using techniques such as diving and aquascope, both of which are potentially time-consuming and demanding survey methods. 3. In this study, a new search method is presented. As glochidia of M. margaritifera are larval parasites on gills of salmonid fish, electrofishing and non-destructive examination of salmonids with the naked eye may reveal the presence of glochidia a…
