2020
"Matei Vișniec’s dramatic universe is characterized by its frequent mises en abyme and metalepsis. Therefore, total or partial reflections of the work in the work, as well as transgressions between reality and fiction, or between the different levels of fiction in the same work are frequent. In this specular and metaleptic kaleidoscope, the encounters between the author and the characters are particularly relevant. These encounters reveal the author’s attitude towards power and censorship, as well as his subversive methods. However, they are also related to the deep tensions of the author’s creative process."
Designing the internal reinforcements of a sailing boat using a topology optimization approach
2022
In naval design it is common practice to define an internal regular web frame made of longitudinal elements and transversal sections with the purpose of giving stiffness to the whole structure and, at the same time, promoting lightness. In this work, FEM simulation and Topology Optimization (TO) tools are implemented to present a different approach in placing the reinforcements inside the hull of a sailing dinghy. The methodology proposed in this paper considers as a starting point the volume inside the hull and the deck completely filled with material and the result after the simulations is a free form shape of the sailboat reinforcements. The TO procedure is based on two different input F…
2022
This paper analyses, based on Genette's theory of hypertextuality, the relationship between translation and reception and the rewrites that derive from it. Leaving aside translation as a serious transformation or transposition, it focuses, first, on exploring translation as the only possible mediation to ensure the reader's familiarity with the foreign hypotext transformed by the hypertext, from the translation of Mark Twain's El Diari d'Eva and the Catalan hypertexts. Secondly, it approaches reception as a hypertextual requirement with the study of Hi ha homes que ploren perquè el sol es pon, by Francesc Trabal, a parody of Faust which, to a large extent, is explained as a playful reaction…
Optimal Management of Human Resources in Transhipment Container Ports
2014
Human resources allocation plays a key role in Transhipment Maritime Container Terminals to achieve high levels of productivity and provide high quality services to shipping companies. The deep interest of container terminals in this issue can be supported by optimization methods. In this work, an optimization model is proposed to determine the optimal daily allocation of crane operators and trailer drivers. Different requirements are taken into account for permanent staff, external workers and personnel shortfall. Since workforce undermanning is a crucial factor for both shipping companies and container terminals, we aim to show that personnel shortfalls and operation delays can be signifi…
Bounds on transient phase plastic deformations in optimal design of steel frames subjected to cyclic loads
2009
A minimum volume multicriterion design of elastic perfectly plastic steel frames subjected to a combination of quasi-static fixed and cyclic loads, bounding the transient phase plastic deformations, is proposed. The problem is formulated according to a plastic shakedown criterion, so that incremental and instantaneous collapse are certainly prevented when the frame is subjected to very strongly amplified cyclic loads. The further condition that the structure must also behave elastically in serviceability conditions is imposed. Since the steady-state loading history is known it is possible to directly bound the steady-state plastic deformations. By applying a suitable own bounding theorem, i…
1998
Abstract Planktic foraminifera with radially elongated chambers appeared on four occasions in the early Cretaceous of the Vocontian Basin (SE France). These appearances coincided with or followed the deposition of organic rich levels which are evidence of hypoxic to anoxic conditions at the sea-floor. In addition, oxygen deficient surface waters are inferred from the occasional presence of Hedbergellas with deformed (insufficiently calcified) walls. It is suggested that the elongation of the chambers of these foraminifera was an adaptive response to the low oxygen content of surface waters, the increased surface area of the test allowing better gas exchange with sea water and the intake of …
Characterization of pressure retarded osmosis lab-scale systems
2016
Power generation from salinity gradient is a viable alternative to produce energy from renewable sources. Pressure Retarded Osmosis (PRO) is one of the technologies proposed so far for the exploitation of such energy source. In the present preliminary work, two different geometry modules were tested under atmospheric pressure (i.e. forward osmosis or depressurized-PRO conditions). The first one is a conventional planar geometry cell. The second is a customized cylindrical membrane module, able to mechanically support the osmotic membrane along with the spacers. The latter, thanks to its design, allows membranes and spacers to be easily changed for testing purposes. A novel simplified proced…
1999
Abstract The genus Bullatimorphites, (macroconchs Bullatimorphites, Kheraiceras; microconchs Bomburites, Schwandorfia, Spbaeroptycbius, Treptoceras), is characterized by an ontogenesis with three morphologic phases: serpenticone, sphaerocone and ellipticone. Within the successive populations, the relative development of these morphologies allows the defined species to be placed in an evolutive and stratigraphic lineage. The history of the genus comprises five steps: 1) emergence (Early Middle Bathonian), 2) first gradual evolution (Middle-Upper Bathonian), 3) first morphological diversification (Uppermost Bathonian), 4) second gradual evolution, 5) second morphological diversification and e…
2000
Structural analysis of extensional faults in the Mâconnais Hills shows that low-intensity extensional phenomena occurred back from the passive margin of the Ligurian Tethys, the axis of which lay some 400 km southeast of the study area in Mid-Jurassic times. Storm-induced rip current directions and coral lens positions suggest that the palaeotopography was maintained by early faulting.
