Publisher Summary This chapter describes four interglacials preceding the Holocene—that is, during the time from about 100 to 450 kyr. The first knowledge on this time has been extracted almost 40 years ago from marine deep sea cores with a sampling resolution of several thousand of years. Deep ocean sediments can be easily dated, because δ18O stratigraphy can be applied all over the ocean basins and tuned directly to the ice volume/sea-level master curve of SPECMAP, which is based on the beat of the orbital insolation cyclicities. Review of paleo-humidity parameters in fossil rodents (Mammalia): Isotopic vs. tooth morphology approach

Paleoecology of fossil rodents is frequently inferred from the dental pattern of the teeth, attributing the habitat conditions of extant rodents to fossil species with similar dental pattern. This technique is common practice and has been in use for several decades. A relatively new technique is based on the carbon and oxygen isotope composition of the incisor enamel of fossil rodents to reconstruct paleoenvironmental scenarios. We combine these two methods, studying material from two Early Miocene Spanish sections, one in the Mediterranean coastal area and one in Northcentral inland Spain. Utilization of muddy detritus as organic matter source by the fan mussel Pinna nobilis.

The knowledge of the feeding habits in marine species is fundamental to better understand their relationship with the environment. Although phytoplankton has been traditionally reported as the main food source consumed by the Mediterranean fan mussel Pinna nobilis, recent studies have revealed that detritus represents an important food source for this species. Occurrence of Kemp's ridley sea turtle ( Lepidochelys kempii) in the Mediterranean

Recent reports of Kemp's ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys kempii) in the Western Mediterranean calls for a re-assessment of the relative importance and the presence of this species in this sea. Different hypotheses to account for the increase in reports are discussed. The present note provides a new report of the species, a juvenile of 28 cm curved carapace length caught close to Valencia (east Spain) on 16 July 2006. Conservation measures in the area should consider this species in the near future.

Diet of Risso's dolphin (<i>Grampus griseus</i>) in the western Mediterranean Sea

The diet of Risso’s dolphin in the Mediterranean is described based on 15 animals stranded between 40°25’N 00°32’W and 37°35’N 00°45’E from April 1987 to January 2003. The prey were mainly oceanic cephalopods. Pelagic octopods, especially A. argo, were the most abundant (mean = 41.28%; SD±34.32). Species belonging to the families Ommastrephidae, Histioteuthidae and Onychoteuthidae were also frequent components of its diet. The bathymetric distribution of cephalopods shows that Risso’s dolphin preferentially feeds on the middle slope (600 to 800 m depth) in the Mediterranean.

Is the Spanish coast within the regular nesting range of the Mediterranean loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta)?

We report the information on loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting events which occurred on the Spanish Mediterranean coast in 2006. Two clutches of 78 and 82 eggs were discovered in the provinces of Valencia (eastern Spain) and Barcelona (north-eastern Spain). We discuss the increasing number of reports of sea turtle nests in Spain within the context of the nesting range of this species in the Mediterranean Sea.

Drilling predation on Gryphus vitreus (Brachiopoda) off the French Mediterranean coasts

Abstract A total of 145 valves of Gryphus vitreus with naticid drillholes have been recorded from samples during 21 cruises in the Northwestern Mediterranean, out of about 30,000 empty valves. Drilling was lower than 1% in all stations, except in one station where it reached up to 25.5%. Selectivity of drillhole site by the naticid Euspirella pulchella seems to apply in G. vitreus as drillholes are mainly concentrated in the relatively meaty distal half of the shell, which is also the thickest part of the valve (about 0.6–2 mm).
