REINSTATEMENT OF THE DINOFLAGELLATE GENUS Tripos TO REPLACE Neoceratium, MARINE SPECIES OF Ceratium (DINOPHYCEAE, ALVEOLATA)

Morphological and molecular data support the split at the genus level of the marine and freshwater species of the dinoflagellate Ceratium (Gonyaulacales, Dinophyceae). A new genus name Neoceratium F. Gomez, D. Moreira & P. Lopez-Garcia was proposed for the marine species. However, it is considered illegitimate (type species is type of Biceratium Vanhoffen), and the nomenclatural priority is here given for the genus Tripos Bory (type species Tripos muelleri ) which replaces Neoceratium . New combinations are proposed for the existing names of species and infraspecific taxa. A new Miocene deep-sea chiton and early evidence for Teredinidae-sustained wood-fall communities

Deep-sea wood-falls are important biodiversity hot spots for insights on chemosynthesis-based communities. The study of deep-sea wood-fall-related palaeocommunities from the Neogene of north Italy shed light on interesting associations from the Miocene of Torrente Cinghio (Tortonian) and of Moncasale di Casina (Langhian). Seasonality of coastal phytoplankton in the Baltic Sea: Influence of salinity and eutrophication

Abstract In this study long-term (1984–2001) phytoplankton and physico-chemical monitoring data representing different salinity regimes of the Baltic Sea were compiled from HELCOM, national and regional databases. The aim was to define seasonal succession patterns of phytoplankton in seven different areas of the Baltic sea, characterised by different salinity, climate, and trophic conditions and to delineate a set of phytoplankton community indicators that are independent of season and salinity, but indicative of trophic status of different coastal areas. The role of lantern fish (Myctophidae) in the life-cycle of cetacean parasites from western Mediterranean waters

Myctophids (lantern fish) and cephalopods play a key role in trophic webs from the continental slope and oceanic waters linking the zooplankton to top predators. Many cetaceans feed on both lantern fish and cephalopods, and such prey would thus be expected to bridge the trophic gap in the life-cycles of helminths infecting cetaceans. However, information on the life-cycles of most of these helminths is extremely scanty. Modeling of the effect of EDTA on copper(II) biosorption onto Posidonia oceanica waste in batch and fixed-bed systems

Abstract The performance of Posidonia oceanica for copper(II) biosorption in the presence of EDTA was investigated in batch and column experiments. In batch mode, copper(II) uptake in the presence of EDTA was lower than in its absence for the pH range 1.5–6.0. The decrease in the copper(II) uptake, attributed to the change in the chemical speciation of copper(II) with EDTA in solution, was from 71.7 to 58.8 mg/g in the absence and presence of EDTA respectively at pH 6. Records of environment contained within the accretionarily deposited tissues of fossil organisms afford a means of detailed reconstruction of past climates and hence of rigorous testing of numerical climate models. We identify the environmental factors controlling oxygen and carbon stable-isotopic composition, and microgrowth-increment size, in the shell of modern examples of the Queen Scallop, Aequipecten opercularis. This understanding is then applied in interpretation of data from mid-Pliocene A. opercularis from eastern England. A simplified infiltration model for highly permeable porous media was introduced, assuming the matric potential gradient as negligible compared to the gravitational gradient. This model enabled us to determine the delay time, i.e., the time that the water front takes (from the beginning of rainfall) to reach the bottom of the highly permeable layer. A simple model relating habitat features to a diapause egg bank

As a way to escape from adverse conditions, many zooplankton populations produce diapausing eggs that accumulate in the sediments and hatch when suitable environmental conditions are restored. While buried in the sediment, diapausing eggs may be affected by several processes (i.e., production, hatching, deterioration, and loss). We present a simple mathematical model for the dynamics of diapausing eggs in the sediment.
