Raman and optical reflection spectra of germanate and silicate glasses
2005
Abstract Germanate and phosphosilicate glasses made in oxygen surplus conditions were studied by Raman and optical reflection methods. We found that the optical reflection spectra of the germanate glasses are quite similar to the one those of a GeO 2 crystal with the α-quartz structure. The reflection of phosphosilicate glasses is very close to silica glass-related spectra. Hence, the determining influence of the tetrahedral structure on reflection spectra is revealed. The Raman spectra of germanate samples are similar to those reported the one known in the literature. Octahedral entities, namely bands similar to stishovite vibration modes, were difficult to detect in phosphosilicate glasse…
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: THE ITALIAN CASE WITHIN PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION
2013
This study offers an Italian perspective of the theme of social responsibility and social reporting. Although it is a widely explored field of accounting research, we focus our attention on the Italian case because we believe that this would be the very first step for a broader research that underlines the significant differences between countries which requires exploring different backgrounds and cultures. This study therefore seeks to: (1) Describe the concept of social responsibility regarding the Italian doctrine, in particular in the Public Administration field; (2) Analyze the characteristics of social reporting in two areas of the public administration which operate in the Italian co…
Calibration of a knock prediction model for the combustion of gasoline-LPG mixtures in spark ignition engines
2015
Gaseous fuels, such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas (NG), thanks to their good mixing capabilities, allow complete and cleaner combustion than gasoline in spark ignition (SI) engines, resulting in lower pollutant emissions and particulate matter. In a previous work the authors showed that the simultaneous combustion of gasoline and LPG improves an SI engine efficiency with respect to pure gasoline operation with any significant power loss. The addition of LPG to the gasoline-air mixture produces an increase in knock resistance that allows running the engine at full load with overall stoichiometric mixture and better spark advance. In order to predict both performance and ef…
Perfluorinated Compounds Distribution and Source Identification in Sediments of Lake Victoria Gulf Basin
2011
Perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonate were determined in the sediments from Winam Gulf, which is in the Kenyan side of Lake Victoria and in its source rivers. The sources of perfluorinated compounds within the Gulf of Lake Victoria have been identified and their levels determined for the first time, in this study, using SPE and HPLC-MS-MS analytical methodology. Variability in the concentrations of perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonate ranged from 1.4–99.1 and <1–57.5 ng/g in river sediments, respectively, which was higher than concentrations obtained from lake sediments (range perfluorooctanoic acid <1–24.1 ng/g and perfluorooctane sulfonate <1–4.0 ng/g). The …
Patient participation in the medical decision-making process in haemato-oncology - a qualitative study
2013
Cancer patients are showing increased interest in shared decision-making. Patients with haematological illnesses, however, express considerably less desire for shared decision-making as compared with other oncological patient groups. The goal of the current project was to identify the reasons for the lower desire for shared decision-making among patients with haematological illness. We conducted qualitative, semi-structured interviews with 11 haematological patients (39-70 years old) after the beginning of therapy concerning the course and evaluation of medical shared decision-making. The patients were often overwhelmed by the complexity of the illness and the therapy and did not want to as…
