Safety of primary anastomosis following emergency left sided colorectal resection: an international, multi-centre prospective audit
2018
Introduction: Some evidence suggests that primary anastomosis following left sided colorectal resection in the emergency setting may be safe in selected patients, and confer favourable outcomes to permanent enterostomy. The aim of this study was to compare the major postoperative complication rate in patients undergoing end stoma vs primary anastomosis following emergency left sided colorectal resection. Methods: A pre-planned analysis of the European Society of Coloproctology 2017 audit. Adult patients (> 16 years) who underwent emergency (unplanned, within 24 h of hospital admission) left sided colonic or rectal resection were included. The primary endpoint was the 30-day major complic…
Influence of gallic acid esters on drug-metabolizing enzymes of rat liver
1982
The effect of three antioxidants, propyl, octyl and dodecyl gallate, on hepatic drug metabolism in male rats was studied in vivo and in vitro. When fed at a dietary concentration of 1% for 14 days, only dodecyl gallate increased relative liver weight. Cytochrome P-450 content was not influenced, but a slight increase in cytochrome b5 content was observed after the feeding of propyl gallate. Monooxygenase activity (benzo[a]pyrene-hydroxylase and ethoxycoumarin-deethylase activities) was not affected by propyl or octyl gallate, but a significant decrease in benzo[a]pyrene-hydroxylase activity was apparent in rats fed dodecyl gallate. Study of benzo[a]pyrene-metabolite formation in liver micro…
Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy Combined With Chemotherapy in Patients With Neuroendocrine Tumors
2019
Combinations of therapies may enhance therapeutic effects without significantly increasing the incidence of adverse events. However, there are few data regarding survival after concomitant chemotherapy and peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) with [Lu]Lu-octreotate in patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Thus, we explored the outcome of this combination of therapies.Fifteen patients with somatostatin receptor-positive, rapidly progressive G2/G3 NETs during chemotherapy or PRRT alone from 2 German cancer centers were included in the retrospective analysis. The patients received a combination of PRRT and chemotherapy with temozolomide (n = 3) or temozolomide plus capecitabine (…
Multicenter, Observational Study of Lanreotide Autogel for the Treatment of Patients with Neuroendocrine Tumors in Routine Clinical Practice in Germa…
2021
Abstract Background The long-acting somatostatin analog lanreotide autogel is effective in the treatment of patients with neuroendocrine tumors. Objective To evaluate the long-term treatment response in patients with neuroendocrine tumors receiving lanreotide autogel in routine clinical practice. Methods Non-interventional, 24-month study in patients with neuroendocrine tumors treated with lanreotide autogel (NCT01840449). Results Patients (n=80) from 26 centers in Germany and Austria were enrolled. Neuroendocrine tumors were mainly grade 1/2, metastasized, intestinal, and associated with carcinoid syndrome; 88.9% had received previous neuroendocrine tumor treatment. Of those, 84.4% had pre…
Therapeutic sequences in patients with grade 1−2 neuroendocrine tumors (NET): an observational multicenter study from the ELIOS group
2019
Purpose: Many different treatments are suggested by guidelines to treat grade 1−2 (G1−G2) neuroendocrine tumors (NET). However, a precise therapeutic algorithm has not yet been established. This study aims at identifying and comparing the main therapeutic sequences in G1−G2 NET. Methods: A retrospective observational Italian multicenter study was designed to collect data on therapeutic sequences in NET. Median progression-free survival (PFS) was compared between therapeutic sequences, as well as the number and grade of side effects and the rate of dose reduction/treatment discontinuation. Results: Among 1182 patients with neuroendocrine neoplasia included in the ELIOS database, 131 G1–G2 ga…
Focal or whole-gland salvage prostate brachytherapy with iodine seeds with or without a rectal spacer for postradiotherapy local failure: How best to…
2016
International audience; PURPOSE: Salvage prostate permanent implant (sPPI) for postradiation local failure provides high rates of biochemical control. The cumulative dose delivered to the prostate and the rectum is still unknown. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We reviewed the postimplant CT-based dosimetry of 18 selected patients who underwent sPPI with I-125 seeds for isolated biopsy-proven local failure several years after external beam radiation therapy. Ten patients had whole-prostate sPPI, and 8 patients had multiparametric MRI-based focal sPPI. In 8 patients, hyaluronic acid (HA) gel was injected into the prostate rectum space. RESULTS: The median cumulative biological effective dose after EB…
In-vivo confocal real-time mini-microscopy in animal models of human inflammatory and neoplastic diseases
2007
Background and study aims Although various improvements in tissue imaging modalities have recently been achieved, in-vivo molecular and subsurface imaging in the field of gastroenterology remains a technical challenge. In this study we evaluated a newly developed, handheld, miniaturized confocal laser microscopy probe for real-time in-vivo molecular and subsurface imaging in rodent models of human disease. Materials and methods The minimicroscope uses a 488-nm, single line laser for fluorophore excitation. The optical slice thickness is 7 microm, the lateral resolution 0.7 microm. The range of the z-axis is 0-250 microm below the tissue surface. Imaging was performed using different fluores…
Randomized clinical trial of prophylactic transanal irrigation
2019
Background Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is a frequent problem after rectal resection. Transanal irrigation (TAI) has been suggested as an effective treatment in patients who have developed LARS. This prospective RCT was undertaken to evaluate the effect of TAI as a prophylactic treatment to prevent symptoms of LARS. Methods Patients who had undergone ultralow rectal resection were randomized to start TAI on a daily basis, or to serve as a control with supportive therapy only after ileostomy closure. All patients were seen after 1 week, 1 month and 3 months, and the maximum number of defaecation episodes per day and night documented during follow‐up. Wexner score, LARS score and Sh…
Neuroprotection of lipoic acid treatment promotes angiogenesis and reduces the glial scar formation after brain injury
2012
After trauma brain injury, a large number of cells die, releasing neurotoxic chemicals into the extracellular medium, decreasing cellular glutathione levels and increasing reactive oxygen species that affect cell survival and provoke an enlargement of the initial lesion. Alpha-lipoic acid is a potent antioxidant commonly used as a treatment of many degenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis or diabetic neuropathy. Herein, the antioxidant effects of lipoic acid treatment after brain cryo-injury in rat have been studied, as well as cell survival, proliferation in the injured area, gliogenesis and angiogenesis. Thus, it is shown that newborn cells, mostly corresponded with blood vessels …
The Qualification of Outcome after Cervical Spine Surgery by Patients Compared to the Neck Disability Index
2016
Contains fulltext : 168196.PDF (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) OBJECTIVE: The Neck Disability Index (NDI) is a patient self-assessed outcome measurement tool to assess disability, and that is frequently used to evaluate the effects of the treatment of neck-related problems. In individualized medicine it is mandatory that patients can interpret data in order to choose a treatment. A change of NDI or an absolute NDI is generally meaningless to a patient. Therefore, a correlation between the qualification of the clinical situation rated by the patient and the NDI score was evaluated. METHODS: Patients who completed an NDI after anterior surgery because of symptomatic single level degenera…
