Bacterial Contamination of Anterior Chamber Fluid Following Non-complicated Cataract Surgery

1993

Objective: To study the anterior chamber contamination during non-complicated cataract surgery and its relationship with normal conjuctival organisms. Setting: Ophthalmology Department, La Fe Hospital, University of Valencia. Patients: Forty patients who had undergone cataract extraction using either ECCE, phacoemulsification or nucleus fracture methods. Results: Positive cultures of aqueous humour were obtained in 32.5% of cases. The most commonly isolated organism was Staphylococcus coagulase-negative. Only in 7.7% of cases was the microorganism found in the conjunctiva the same as that found in the anterior chamber. The inoculum size ranged between 20 and 160 colonies/ml. One of the case…

Tear Film Surface Quality in Modern Daily Disposable Contact Lens Wear

2021

Objectives As reported previously, tear film surface quality (TFSQ) should be considered in contact lens (CL) fitting. This study followed noninvasive keratograph tear film break-up time (NIKBUT) in CL wearers for 12 months to validate its clinical utility in predicting CL performance. Methods Fifty-five subjects (M/F=17/38) aged 26±4 years were prescribed silicone hydrogel or hydrogel CLs. The study included baseline measurements without CLs; 2 visits for CL fitting and control; follow-up after 3, 6, and 12 months of CL wear; and postwear visit without CLs. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), 8-Item Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire (CLDEQ-8), first and mean NIKBUT (F/M-NIKBUT), fluoresc…

<p>A randomized multicenter study comparing seawater washes and carmellose artificial tears eyedrops in the treatment of dry eye syndrome</p…

2019

Purpose To investigate the safety and efficacy of sterile isotonic seawater washes vs standard treatment with carmellose artificial tears in dry eye syndrome (DES). Patients and methods This is a randomized multicenter prospective study with 12 weeks of follow-up. A group of patients with DES (N=60) were treated with seawater spray (Quinton®) five times daily, and another similar group (N=60) were treated with carmellose artificial tears eyedrops (Viscofresh® 0.5%) five times a day. The parameters studied and measured were as follows: Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire score, Schirmer I test (without anesthesia) score, tear osmolarity (TearLab®), tear breakup time, tear meniscus hei…

2017

Purpose To compare two surgical approaches for treating encapsulated blebs after trabeculectomy with mitomycin C, in terms of the development of intraocular pressure and progression of glaucoma in a long-term follow up: 1. bleb needling alone vs. 2. a combined approach of needling with additional transconjunctival scleral flap sutures, to prevent early ocular hypotony. Methods Forty-six patients with failing blebs after trabeculectomy with mitomycin C were enrolled in this study. Patients received either needling revision alone (group 1; n = 23) or a combined needling with additional transconjuctival flap sutures, if intraoperatively the intraocular pressure was estimated to be low (group 2…

Functional brain imaging: a window into the visuo-vestibular systems

2007

Advances have been made in identifying how areas involved in processing vestibular, ocular motor, and visual information are represented in the human cortex as well as the cortical interaction between these systems in healthy subjects. While we know how some vestibular and ocular motor disorders modify visuo-vestibular interaction by changing the 'normal' cortical activation-deactivation patterns, it is still early days in functional magnetic resonance imaging studies of patients with specific disorders. Findings from current brain imaging studies of several vestibular, ocular motor, and cerebellar disorders are presented. The promise of more insights into the complex neuronal networks of the…

Graft Healing in ACL Reconstruction: Can We Enhance It in Clinical Practice?

2012

The ACL-Deficient Knee: A Problem Solving Approach, focuses on problem analysis and problem solving, as well as analyzing the possibility of prevention. In each chapter, the biomechanics, anatomy, etc. that are relevant to the topic are reviewed. There are chapters where highly specialized surgical techniques are presented (v. gr. double bundle reconstruction or meniscal transplant), as well as developing areas such as ACL tears in children, where we are finding a growing number of injuries due to the increase of sports at early ages Surgical reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) using tendon grafts is the current standard to treat the functionally ACL-deficient knee. The s…

Early histological maturation in the hippocampus of the guinea pig.

2000

The vesicular zinc-rich synaptic systems of the principal neurons of the hippocampus are well developed in newborn guinea pigs, a precocial species. In addition, alvear and fimbrial myelinated fibers as well as significant inhibitory interneurons (i.e. somatostatin, parvalbumin and opioid immunoreactive hippocampal interneurons) are also well developed. On the contrary, neither vesicular zinc synapses nor myelinated fibers nor the above mentioned immunoreactive interneurons are detectable in newborn specimens of other related altricial species such as rats or rabbits. These data suggest that early maturation of a highly integrative center related to cognitive map building such as the hippoc…

Tetrodotoxin slightly shortens action potential duration in ventricular but not in atrial heart muscle.

1988

Tetrodotoxin (TTX), at concentrations significantly decreasing maximal upstroke velocity (dV/dtmax) of the action potential, exerted variable effects on action potential duration (APD) in different myocardial preparations. APD was virtually unchanged by tetrodotoxin in the guinea pig atrium, but slightly shortened in the guinea pig ventricle at maximally effective concentrations. In the human ventricle, both dV/dtmax and APD were reduced in the same concentration range of TTX. These results suggest that a TTX-sensitive sodium current significantly contributes to the repolarization phase of the action potential in ventricular but not in atrial heart muscle.

Heritability of corneal refraction and corneal astigmatism: a population-based twin study among 66- to 79-year-old female twins.

2012

. Purpose:  To examine the heritability of corneal refraction power (CR) and corneal astigmatism (AST) in older women. Methods:  Corneal refraction and AST were measured by IOL master in 52 monozygotic (MZ) and 47 dizygotic (DZ) female twin pairs aged 66–79 years. The relative contribution of genetic and environmental factors to individual differences in CR was estimated by applying an independent pathway model to the twin data and AST by intraclass correlations (ICC). Results:  For the right eye, mean CR was 44.58 dioptres (D) (standard deviation (SD) ±1.28) When comparing CR of the right and left eye between MZ and DZ, no significant difference was found. Mean AST was 0.77 D (SD ±0.44) wi…
