Urban air pollution and emergency room admissions for respiratory symptoms: a case-crossover study in Palermo, Italy
2011
Abstract Background Air pollution from vehicular traffic has been associated with respiratory diseases. In Palermo, the largest metropolitan area in Sicily, urban air pollution is mainly addressed to traffic-related pollution because of lack of industrial settlements, and the presence of a temperate climate that contribute to the limited use of domestic heating plants. This study aimed to investigate the association between traffic-related air pollution and emergency room admissions for acute respiratory symptoms. Methods From January 2004 through December 2007, air pollutant concentrations and emergency room visits were collected for a case-crossover study conducted in Palermo, Sicily. Ris…
Risk factors of Oral cancer- A hospital based case control study
2018
Background Oral cancer is a highly prevalent malignancy in Pakistan. Among various risk factors associated with this neoplasm, habits such as smoked and smokeless tobacco usage, betel quid, and betel nut consumption are the major culprits in our society. In the present study, we aimed to ascertain prevalent risk factors for OC in our population and to compare our findings with healthy controls to establish their significance. Material and methods A hospital-based case control study was conducted at Dow University of Health Sciences, Pakistan from January 2015 - September 2016. Information pertaining to unhealthy oral habits was obtained from 62 oral cancer patients (cases) and 62 healthy co…
No findings of dental defects in children treated with minocycline
2004
Thanks to their broad antimicrobial spectrum, tetracyclines were found to be valuable for the treatment of many infections (10). Unfortunately, they irreversibly bind to calcifying tissues and are deposited along the incremental lines of dentine and enamel, causing defects and staining, from bright yellow to dark brown (3, 5, 8). According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, tetracyclines are not indicated for the treatment of common infections in children younger than 8 years of age. However, doxycycline (a tetracycline analogue) is recommended for treatment of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in children of any age (1). Minocycline has several advantages over other tetracyclines: it is bet…
A multi-centre study of candidate genes for wheeze and allergy: the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood Phase 2
2009
BACKGROUND: Common polymorphisms have been identified in genes suspected to play a role in asthma. We investigated their associations with wheeze and allergy in a case-control sample from Phase 2 of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood. METHODS: We compared 1105 wheezing and 3137 non-wheezing children aged 8-12 years from 17 study centres in 13 countries. Genotyping of 55 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 14 genes was performed using the Sequenom System. Logistic regression models were fitted separately for each centre and each SNP. A combined per allele odds ratio and measures of heterogeneity between centres were derived by random effects meta-ana…
MAINZ CONGENITAL BIRTH DEFECT MONITORING SYSTEM
1994
The two most important aims of tho Mainz Congenital Birth Defect Monitoring Syitem wore to find “incidence” rates and to took for etiological causes of congenital malformations. All babies born in Mainz underwent a standardized physical and sonographic examination. Anamnestic data of family history, enviromental factors, drug exposure etc. were collected. Using case controll studies we looked for special correlations between morphologic defects and anamnestic data as factors of risk. The relative risk was calculated as odds ratio. Results: In 1990 and 1991 we examinated 8430 newborns. 656 (7,8%) children had major and 2609 (31,1%) minor malformations. Systemic localisation of major defects:…
Vitamin D status during pregnancy and wheezing and asthma during childhood
2019
Background: Maternal vitamin D can have a protective role on child’s respiratory health, but the results from prospective studies are still inconsistent. We examined whether maternal circulating vitamin D levels during pregnancy are associated with wheezing and asthma during childhood in a Spanish birth cohort. Methods: Maternal circulating 25(OH)D3 levels were measured during the first trimester of pregnancy. Information on active wheezing (wheezing episodes plus medication), wheezing patterns (early, late-onset, and persistent wheeze), and physician-diagnosed asthma ever was obtained from parental questionnaires administered from 1 to 7 years in new cohorts(N=1964) and from 1 to 9 years i…
Objectively recorded physical activity and the association with gestational diabetes
2014
The aim of this population-based study was to assess the association between objectively recorded physical activity (PA) in early gestation and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) identified at 28 weeks of gestation in a multi-ethnic cohort of healthy pregnant women in Oslo, Norway. In total, 759 women were included. In early gestation (<20 weeks), light-, moderate-, and vigorous-intensity PA and number of steps were objectively recorded (SenseWear™ Armband Pro3), and self-reported PA, demographics, and anthropometrics were collected. The 75-g oral glucose tolerance test was performed at 28 weeks of gestation. Women with GDM had fewer objectively recorded steps (mean 7964 steps/day vs 8879 …
HUMAN LEUKOCYTE ANTIGEN POLYMORPHISMS IN ITALIAN PRIMARY BILIARY CIRRHOSIS: A MULTICENTER STUDY OF 664 PATIENTS AND 1992 HEALTHY CONTROLS
2008
Genetic factors are critical in determining susceptibility to primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), but there has not been a clear association with human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes. We performed a multicenter case-control study and analyzed HLA class II DRB1 associations using a large cohort of 664 well-defined cases of PBC and 1992 controls of Italian ancestry. Importantly, healthy controls were rigorously matched not only by age and sex, but also for the geographical origin of the proband four grandparents (Northern, Central, and Southern Italy). After correction for multiple testing, DRB1*08 [odds ratio (OR), 3.3; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.4-4.5] and DRB1*02 (OR 0.9; 95% CI 0.8-1.2) …

A Comparative Analysis of Hospital Readmissions in France and the US
2015
International audience; Policymakers in the US and France are struggling to improve coordination among hospitals and other health care providers. A comparison of hospital readmission rates, and the factors that may explain them, can provide important insights about the French and US health care systems. In addition, it illustrates a methodological approach to comparative research: how an empirical inquiry along a single indicator can reveal broader issues about system-wide differences across health care systems and policy. Using data from three French regions, the article extends a previous national-level comparison indicating that rates of hospital readmission for the population aged 65+ a…
