Predictors of nurses' attitudes and knowledge towards pain management in Italy. A cross-sectional study in the hospital settings.

2021

Abstract Introduction Pain is multidimensional, and as such it is the chief reason patients require urgent health care services. If inadequately assessed and untreated, pain may negatively impact on the quality of life of the patient. Pain management is an essential part of Nursing. The aim to this study is to examine the level of knowledge and attitudes with regard to pain among Italian nurses who work in clinical settings. Methods The Ferrell and McCaffery's Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain was distributed to 266 nurses employed in one specialized hospital in Rome, Italy. The staff in the survey work in three different settings: the intensive care unit, the sub-intensive care…

Analysis of Caesarean Section Rates Using the Robson Classification System at a University Hospital in Spain

2020

Background: The WHO recommends the use of the Robson ten-group classification system (RTGCS) as an effective monitoring and analysis tool to assess the use of caesarean sections (CS). The present study aimed to conduct an analysis of births using the RTGCS in La Ribera University Hospital over nine years and to assess the levels and trends of CS births. Methods: Retrospective study between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2018. All eligible women were allocated in RTGCS to determine the absolute and relative contribution made by each group to the overall CS rate

Sex differences in the relationship among alcohol, smoking, and Helicobacter pylori infection in asymptomatic individuals

2020

Objective We aimed to investigate the relationship of Helicobacter pylori infection with alcohol and smoking. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study among participants who underwent health check-ups for H. pylori infection between January 2013 and March 2017. We subsequently investigated the relationship of H. pylori infection with alcohol and smoking. Results A total of 7169 participants were enrolled in this study. The overall prevalence of H. pylori infection was 55.2%. Participants with H. pylori infection were more likely to be older than those without H. pylori infection. For male participants with H. pylori infection, multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated that bo…

Differential impact of syncope on the prognosis of patients with acute pulmonary embolism: a systematic review and meta-analysis

2018

Aims Controversial reports exist in the literature regarding the prognostic role and therapeutic implications of syncope in patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the association between syncope and short-term adverse outcomes, taking into account the presence or absence of haemodynamic compromise at acute PE presentation. Methods and results The literature search identified 1664 studies, 29 of which were included for a total of 21 956 patients with PE (n = 3706 with syncope). Syncope was associated with higher prevalence of haemodynamic instability [odds ratio (OR) 3.50; 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.67-4.58], as well…

Predictive value of the Kuijer score for bleeding and other adverse in-hospital events in patients with venous thromboembolism

2021

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) constitute a major global burden of disease. Current international guidelines recommend treatment with anticoagulant therapy after VTE for a duration of at least 3 months. Since anticoagulation also imposes an increased risk for bleeding events, the individual risk has to be evaluated to determine adequate treatment plans. The nationwide German inpatient sample of the years 2005-2017 was used for this analysis. Hospitalized VTE patients were stratified according to Kuijer risk class and the performance of the Kuijer score was evaluated to predict adverse in-hospital events.Overall, 1,204,895 VTE patients were treated between 2005 and 2017 in Germany and were incl…

Viral clearance in HCV viraemic patients with normal alanine aminotransferase after combination therapy: a controlled, open-labelled study

2004

Summary Background : In patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection and persistently normal alanine aminotransferase levels, liver fibrosis has been reported in 0–22% of cases and advanced liver disease in 5–10% of cases. Aim : To determine whether patients with persistently normal alanine aminotransferase levels clear infection after anti-viral therapy at equal or different rates from infected patients with raised alanine aminotransferase levels. Methods : Thirty-five hepatitis C virus RNA-positive patients with fibrosis at liver histology (Group 1) were matched for genotype, sex, age and histology with patients with raised alanine aminotransferase levels (Group 2). Both groups were …

Distal spleno-renal shunt versus endoscopic sclerotherapy in the prevention of variceal rebleeding

1992

Meta-analysis was used to evaluate 4 clinical trials comparing distal spleno-renal shunt (DSRS) with endoscopic sclerotherapy (EVS) in the prevention of variceal rebleeding: the interval between bleeding and therapy ranges from 100 days. A questionnaire was sent to each author of the published trials concerning methods, definitions and results of the trials in order to obtain more detailed and up-to-date information. The selected end-points for the meta-analysis were: rebleeding, mortality and chronic encephalopathy. Analysis of the results in the questionnaires was made using the method proposed by Collins. The pooled relative risk (i.e. the combined Odds ratio of each trial as an estimate…

Transmembrane 6 Superfamily Member 2 Gene Variant Disentangles Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis From Cardiovascular Disease

2015

Excess hepatic storage of triglycerides is considered a benign condition, but nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) may progress to fibrosis and promote atherosclerosis. Carriers of the TM6SF2 E167K variant have fatty liver as a result of reduced secretion of very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDLs). As a result, they have lower circulating lipids and reduced risk of myocardial infarction. In this study, we aimed to assess whether TM6SF2 E167K affects liver damage and cardiovascular outcomes in subjects at risk of NASH. Liver damage was evaluated in 1,201 patients who underwent liver biopsy for suspected NASH; 427 were evaluated for carotid atherosclerosis. Cardiovascular outcomes were assessed …

Systematic review of the diagnosis of gastric premalignant conditions and neoplasia with high-resolution endoscopic technologies

2013

Aim. The aim of the article is to systematically review the current evidence on the diagnostic use of narrow band imaging (NBI), flexible spectral imaging color enhancement (FICE) and endoscopic image enhancement technology i-scan endoscopies for gastric precancerous and cancerous lesions. Materials and methods. Original manuscripts were searched in PubMed until October 2012. Pertinent data were collected and pooled diagnostic accuracy measures were estimated when possible. Results. In total, 38 studies were evaluated. Thirty-one studies were included for NBI and 7 studies for FICE assessment in this systematic review. No article was found meeting inclusion criteria for i-scan endoscopy. Th…

Anxiety and depressive symptoms, and stress biomarkers in pregnant women after in vitro fertilization: a prospective cohort study.

2017

STUDY QUESTION Does in vitro fertilization (IVF) affect the course of anxiety and depressive symptoms as well as physiological stress from pregnancy to postpartum period? SUMMARY ANSWER IVF mothers have more anxiety symptoms and higher stress biomarker levels but fewer depression symptoms than natural conception mothers at the third trimester of pregnancy, but these differences are negligible during postpartum period. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Cross-sectional studies have found an association between IVF and high stress levels during the prenatal period. There is, however, no follow-up study about the IVF effect on the mental health status from pregnancy to postpartum, adopting simultaneous mea…
