Decayed, missing and filled teeth and dental anomalies in long term survived leukemic children: a prospective controlled study
2011
Objective: The aim of this prospective controlled study is the comparison between long-term children survived leukaemia and a control group in terms of the decayed, missing or filled permanent teeth (DMFT) and dental anomalies. Study design: Fifty-two long term children survived leukaemia, aged from 8 to 15 years (27 females, 25 males; mean age 11.5 years) were evaluated for the possible effects of the anti-leukaemic therapy on dental development and compared to a control group of 52 healthy children (27 females, 25 males, mean age 11 years). All long-term children who survived were at least 24 months in continuous complete remission. The study of the dental status with a routine oral exami…

Clinical indicators of periodontal disease in patients with coronary heart disease : a 10 years longitudinal study
2011
Objectives: There is evidence about a possible relationship existing between periodontal diseases and coronary heart disease. The aim of the present longitudinal study was to investigate the changes in periodontal evolution after etiological periodontal treatment, comparing a healthy control group with another having coronary heart disease. Study Design: The study included initially 55 patients of which 44 finished it. They were placed into two groups: Healthy Control Group (HCG) n =9, and Coronary Heart Disease Group (CHDG) n=35. The gingival level (GL), probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), plaque index (PI) and bleeding on probing (BOP) were measured to compare the periodo…

Coronectomy - An alternative approach to remove impacted teeth in oncological patients.
2018
Background Coronectomy involves the section of the tooth crown leaving the roots in the socket. Possibility of inferior alveolar nerve injury and mandibular fracture are the main indications for this approach. Herein, we describe a case series of coronectomy to highlight its indication in normal and oncological patients. Material and methods A total of 9 patients were submitted to coronectomy, 6 of them were oncological. Three patients were evaluated before head and neck radiotherapy (HNRT), 2 after HNRT and 1 before bone marrow transplantation. Results Mean age of the patients was 49 years, most of them male (n=7). Lower third molars were the main teeth that received this procedure, and al…
Resting position of the head and malocclusion in a group of patients with cerebral palsy
2014
Cerebral palsy are found as a result of these disorders, along with associated neuromuscular functional alterations that affect the resting position of the head. In this context, the resting position of the head could be responsible for several skeletal and dental occlusal disorders among patients with cerebral palsy. Objective: To assess the presence of malocclusions in patients with cerebral palsy, define the most frequent types of malocclusions, and evaluate how the resting position of the head may be implicated in the development of such malocclusions. Study design: Forty-four patients aged between 12-55 years (18 males and 26 females) were studied. Occlusal conditions, the Dental Aesth…
Osteogenesis imperfecta type III : oral, craniofacial characteristics and atypical radiographic findings oral
2021
Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a disease characterized by decreased bone mineral density, causing susceptibility to bone fractures by mild trauma and bone deformities. The aim of this study was to describe an osteogenesis imperfecta type III clinical case, its craniofacial and oral changes as well as its atypical radiographic findings. An eighteen-year-old, male patient diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta type III was referred for dental evaluation; the clinical examination showed the craniofacial and oral changes of the disease such as triangular face, class III malocclusion, anterior open bite and posterior crossbite, dentinogenesis imperfecta presenting amber discoloration. Long-term effect on adenoid dimensions and craniocervical angulation after maxillary expansion with fixed or functional appliances
2020
Background Maxillary expansion is a common orthodontic procedure that could have a positive effect also on airway patency. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long-term effects of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) on nasopharyngeal area and cranio-cervical angulation in growing patients, compared to controls treated with a function-generating bite appliance (FGB). Material and methods Sixty patients aged 6-14 consecutively treated with RME or FGB were selected retrospectively and divided into two groups. Lateral cephalograms taken before and after treatment were retrieved, and the nasopharyngeal area, delimited superiorly by a sella-posterior nasal spine (PNS) line and inferiorly…
Incidence of oral health in paediatric patients with disabilities: Sensory disorders and autism spectrum disorder. Systematic review II
2016

Dental procedures cause stress in children with cerebral palsy?

Material and Methods A total of 38 children aged 7 to 12 years were divided into two groups: one with 18 children with cerebral palsy and the other with 20 healthy children (control group). Saliva was noninvasively collected before and after dental care to analyze salivary biomarkers. The Frankl Behavior Scale and the Facial Image Scale were applied. Results After the dental procedure, cortisol levels were significantly higher (p = 0.02) in the cerebral palsy group than in the control group. Salivary alpha-amylase was not significa…
