Island selection on mammalian life-histories: genetic differentiation in offspring size
2008
BACKGROUND: Since Darwin's pioneering work, evolutionary changes in isolated island populations of vertebrates have continued to provide the strongest evidence for the theory of natural selection. Besides macro-evolutionary changes, micro-evolutionary changes and the relative importance of natural selection vs. genetic drift are under intense investigation. Our study focuses on the genetic differentiation in morphological and life-history traits in insular populations of a small mammal the bank vole Myodes glareolus. RESULTS: Our results do not support the earlier findings for larger adult size or lower reproductive effort in insular populations of small mammals. However, the individuals li…

Coffee Restores Expression of lncRNAs Involved in Steatosis and Fibrosis in a Mouse Model of NAFLD
2021
Background and aim: Coffee intake exerts protective effects against non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), although without fully cleared mechanisms. In this study we aimed to assess whether coffee consumption may influence the expression of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the liver. Methods: C57BL/6J mice were fed a 12-week standard diet (SD), high-fat diet (HFD) or HFD plus decaffeinated coffee solution (HFD + coffee). Expression of specific lncRNAs involved in NAFLD was analyzed by real-time PCR. For the most differentially expressed lncRNAs, the analysis was also extended to their mRNA targets. Results: Decaffeinated coffee intake reduced body weight gain, prevented NAFLD, lowered…
When Customer base is not loyalty! : Differences in the Consumers' Appraisal of Performance of Mobile Telecommunications Service Providers in Port Ha…
2017
Reports from both local and international telecommunications agencies attest that Nigerian telecommunications industry is the fastest growing in Africa and one of the fastest growing in the world. Currently, the sector boasts of about 157 million active subscribers being serviced by four dominant operators. However, there have been strident calls by consumers to the regulatory agencies to apply sanctions to the operators as a result of persistent poor quality of service. As a matter of fact, all the service providers do not deliver uniform level of service. This study is therefore aimed at examining the differences in the consumers’ appraisal of the quality of service and offerings of the s…
Longitudinal Stability of Reading Difficulties : Examining the Effects of Measurement Error, Cut-Offs, and Buffer Zones in Identification
2020
This study examined the stability of reading difficulties (RD) from grades 2 to 6 and focused on the effects of measurement error and cut-off selection in the identification of RD and its stability with the use of simulations. It addressed methodological limitations of prior studies by (a) applying a model-based simulation analysis to examine the effects of measurement error and cut-offs in the identification of RD, (b) analyzing a non-English and larger sample, and (c) examining RD in both reading fluency and reading comprehension. Reading fluency and reading comprehension of 1,432 Finnish-speaking children were assessed in grades 2 and 6. In addition to the use of single cut-off points on…
Motor imagery in unipolar major depression
2014
International audience; Background: Motor imagery is a potential tool to investigate action representation, as it can provide insights into the processes of action planning and preparation. Recent studies suggest that depressed patients present specific impairment in mental rotation. The present study was designed to investigate the influence of unipolar depression on motor imagery ability. Methods: Fourteen right-handed patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for unipolar depression were compared to 14 matched healthy controls. Imagery ability was accessed by the timing correspondence between executed and imagined movements during a pointing task, involving strong spatiotemporal constraints (spee…
PREDICTING SUCCESS INDICATORS OF AN INTERVENTION PROGRAMME FOR CONVICTED INTIMATE-PARTNER VIOLENCE OFFENDERS: THE CONTEXTO PROGRAMME
2013
Recent legal changes in Spain have led to an important increase in the number of men court-mandated to community-based partner violence offender intervention programmes. However, just a few of those interventions have been systematically examined. This study aims to predict success indicators of an intervention programme for convicted intimate-partner violence offenders. The sample consisted of 212 convicted intimate-partner violence offenders who participated in the Contexto Programme. Three "intervention gains" or target criteria were established (increasing the perceived severity of violence, increasing the responsibility assumption for one's actions, and reducing the risk of recidivism)…
Trade-offs or Complements? : Balancing Diversified Stakeholder Expectations, Institutional Pressures, and Functional Demands in the Strategic Managem…
2019
While scholars and practitioners have warned that business schools are losing their edge in creating and disseminating relevant knowledge in the crosscurrent of environmental demands, the management and organization of higher education institutions (HEIs) have been described as “herding cats” and “organized anarchy”. The teaching–research nexus forms the cornerstone of academic organization and has a quintessential role in strategic management. However, despite the growing body of literature on HEIs’ teaching–research nexus, organization, and environmental changes, few studies have examined the interplay of the three. Therefore, this study combines two contingency-theory views to examine th…
Contaminated sediments from dredging activities as modern turbidites: geochemical signatures in box-core sediments from the Augusta area, Ionian Sea,…
2009
The Augusta area (SE Sicily) is one of the most industrialized and contaminated coastal environments in the Mediterranean region, having a relatively high influx of unregulated industrial effluents. Valuable sets of geochemical data (major elements and trace metals), obtained from box-core sediments collected along a transect from the Sicilian coastal zone seawards of Augusta and dated via 210Pb and 137Cs, indicated increased metal contamination (notably Hg) since ca 1940-1950, related to the industrial development of the area. Metal enrichment is considerable in the coastal sediments, being significantly in excess (for Hg and Pb) of background values estimated for the Strait of Sicily. Mor…
Du marketing expérientiel appliqué aux musées
2005
