A cost of maternal care in the dung beetle Onthophagus taurus?
2002
Parental care theory assumes that investment in current offspring will trade against future investment. A number of field studies on birds have used clutch size manipulations to demonstrate a survival cost to chick rearing. However, such studies do not account for costs accrued during earlier stages of reproduction because not all aspects of reproductive effort are manipulated by varying the number of nestlings. In this study, we investigate the effect of reproductive effort on female survival in the dung beetle, Onthophagus taurus. By experimentally manipulating mating status and dung availability, we demonstrate that virgin females survive longer than mated females and that the survival o…
Multiple aspects of plasticity in clutch size vary among populations of a globally-distributed songbird.
2013
Plasticity in life-history characteristics can influence many ecological and evolutionary phenomena, including how invading organisms cope with novel conditions in new locations or how environmental change affects organisms in native locations. Variation in reaction norm attributes is a critical element to understanding plasticity in life history, yet we know relatively little about the ways in which reaction norms vary within and among populations. We amassed data on clutch size from marked females in eight populations of house sparrows (Passer domesticus) from North America and Europe. We exploited repeated measures of clutch size to assess both the extent of within-individual phenotypic …
Mitigating the Climate Change Impacts of Aviation through Behavioural Change
2020
Aviation plays a crucial role for economic development and social welfare, but at the same time it also significantly contributes to climate change. Therefore, if the industry wants to follow the same growth path as it has in the past, it will need to mitigate its environmental impacts more seriously or it may otherwise face regulatory restrictions. The current literature has discussed five mitigation strategies. These are technological changes, market-based changes, operational changes, regulatory changes and behavioural changes. While several authors have regarded behavioural changes as the measure with the greatest mitigation potential, it is also the measure that has received far less a…
Micropropagation of Globe Artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L. var. scolymus).
2013
The globe artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L. var. scolymus) is a perennial plant cultivated in the Mediterranean region and the Americas for its edible young flower heads. Although vegetative propagation by offshoots or by “ovoli” (underground dormant axillary buds) has been the primary method of propagation, the potential for the diffusion of diseases and the phenotypic variability can be very high. The propagation of this species by axillary shoot proliferation from in vitro cultured meristems produces systemic pathogen free plants and a higher multiplication rate as compared to that obtained by conventional agamic multiplication. Axillary shoot proliferation can be induced from excised sho…
Work rhythm, flow and success in a project : a case study research
2013
Masteroppgave i økonomi og administrasjon - Universitetet i Agder 2013 Organisations and individuals are shaped and influenced by their environment and interaction with others in a conscious or unconscious manner. Due to increased competitiveness, organisations need to be aware of elements in their environment and how these can affect operations and outcomes. Rhythms in organisations and the employee’s work rhythms are considered to influence flow and the achieved level of success in organisations. This thesis aims to investigate factors setting the work rhythms for organisations and individuals, and to study whether work rhythms influence flow and level of success. Our research question wa…
Strategiimplementering i offentlig sektor
2017

Master´s thesis in Business Administration (BE 501) The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of perceived flexibility and work-home interaction on life satisfaction. The lack of previous research, on the direct connections between the variables, perceived flexibility, and life satisfaction, resulted in the purpose of this study. Work-home interaction has indications of connection to both perceived flexibility and life satisfaction (Hill et al., 2001: Clark, 2000: Vodanovich et al., 2006), and was of that reason presented as a possible mediator. Based on this, hypotheses regarding the relationship between the variables were created. In order to test the seven hypotheses, the method …

Master´s thesis in Business Administration (BE501) This thesis expands upon the debate surrounding the paper of DeMiguel, Garlappi &Uppal (2009). We investigate the performance of optimized strategies compared to the naive 1/N rule while controlling for data-snooping. Using the Sharpe ratio and theFFC4 alpha as performance measures, we investigate 10 basic portfolio strategies with datasets from the US and Norwegian markets. We attempt to answer two weaknesses of previous studies on the topic by accounting for data-snooping using White’s RealityCheck (WRC) and the Superior Predictive Ability (SPA) test. In addition, we include the alpha measure in order to account for the established factor…
