Diagnostic yield of a one sample immunochemical test at different cut-off values in an organised screening programme for colorectal cancer
2013
Abstract Background Quantitative immunochemical faecal occult blood tests have become the recommended tests for colorectal cancer screening. The aim of this study was to complete our knowledge on the performance of one of the quantitative immunochemical tests available, FOB-Gold, and to propose a possible strategy for an organised screening programme. Patients and methods Within the French organised screening programme, 23,231 average-risk individuals, aged 50–74 performed both a 3-day Hemoccult test and a 1-day FOB-Gold test. Performances of the immunochemical test were evaluated at different cut-off levels. Results The positivity rate for the Hemoccult was 2.1% and for the FOB-Gold varied…
Spatial Gradients of Intensity and Persistence of Soil Water Repellency Under Different Forest Types in Central Mexico
2016
Organic residues release hydrophobic compounds to the soil that may induce soil water repellency (WR), which may inhibit infiltration and increase runoff and soil loss rates. Although there are many studies on soil WR through the world, very few investigations have been conducted in Mexican areas. This paper studies the natural background of soil WR in soils from central Mexico under representative forest types, analyzing the spatial distribution of soil WR in relation with tree canopy, vegetation cover and main soil chemical (pH, CaCO3, organic C content and exchangeable cations) and physical properties (texture). The water drop penetration time and the ethanol tests were used to assess pe…
Approximate Algorithm for Fast Capacity Provisioning in WANs with Trade-Off between Performance and Cost under Budget Constraint
2014
Due to the emergence of Software Defined Networking (SDN) with the idea of centralized control over computer networks, the Capacity and Flow Assignment Problem (CFA) may be approached in a classical non-distributed fashion in real-life scenarios. The question arises whether a heuristical approach to this NP-complete problem is of any use in practice.
On the Determinants of the Going Public Decision in Spain
2008
Though the going public decision has been addressed by several theories, empirical research is particularly scarce to European countries. This is the first research in the Spanish market that investigates ex ante and ex post characteristics of IPO firms, using a large database of private held firms that potentially may go public. Some of our results are consistent with previous studies. Our evidence suggests that firms that go public are young firms with large capital expenditures previously to the IPO. However, a firm's need to finance activity is not the main motive to go public, but to achieve the proper conditions to rebalance firm's economic and financial structure. Our results are con…
La Psicologga Financiera Y La Estructura De Capital De Las Pymes (The Financial Psychology and SME's Capital Structure)
2015
TRADE-OFF THEORY VS. PECKING ORDER THEORY – EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM THE BALTIC COUNTRIES
2014
Capital structure is of particular importance in estimating the company value; an accurately estimated and selected equity and debt ratio can maximize the company value and minimizes the cost of capital; therefore, this issue is especially significant in the changing conditions of economic development. The main purpose of this study is to simultaneously evaluate the pecking order and trade-off theories of capital structure and determine which one performs better for a sample of companies from the Baltic states. Analysis is conducted on a sample of 75 listed companies (Baltic Stock Exchange) over the period from 1998 to 2011. The authors test theories using panel data and regression analysis…
The influence of business groups on board composition in offshore financial multinational enterprises
2023
Based on resource dependence theory we argue for an influence of business groups (BGs) on the board composition of constituent offshore financial multinational enterprises (FMNEs). Using a unique sample of 171 Caribbean FMNEs in an inter-island BG setting, we find BGs’ control in constituent firms to be indicative of the importance of the internal financing and intermediation within the group network. This control leads to a higher proportion of lawyers hired to the boards of directors in BG-constituent firms and supports the argument that lawyers provide skills in complex offshore regulatory frameworks that facilitate BGs’ optimal tax management. Furthermore, we observe that an increased a…
SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE MANAGEMENTS TO CONTROL SOIL EROSION
2021
[EN] High rates of soil erosion compromise sustainable agriculture. In rainfed agricultural fields, erosion rates several orders of magnitude higher than the erosion rates considered tolerable have been quantified. In Mediterranean rainfed crops such as vineyards, almonds and olive groves, and in the new sloping citrus and persimmon plantations, the rates of soil loss make it necessary to apply measures to reduce them to avoid collapse in agricultural production. Managements such as weeds, catch crops and mulches (straw and pruning remains) are viable options to achieve sustainability. This work applies measurements through plots, simulated rainfall experiments and ISUM (Improved Stock-Unea…

The Experience of Impecuniousness in a Noble Family at the End of the Nineteenth Century
2017
Abstract Being a member of the elite imposed high demands on the livelihood of noble civil servant families in Finland at the end of the nineteenth century. Although the salaries of high-ranking officials were relatively substantial, they could not always ensure the standard of living which was demanded by the elite of the Grand Duchy of Finland. This article concerns the family of the governor, Baron Gustaf Aminoff, and their livelihood. The living of the Aminoff family was totally derived from Governor Aminoff's salaries and fees; they had no other sources of income, such as a manor or land. The Aminoff family constantly suffered a lack of money and its everyday consumption was rational a…
