On finding common neighborhoods in massive graphs

2003

AbstractWe consider the problem of finding pairs of vertices that share large common neighborhoods in massive graphs. We prove lower bounds on the resources needed to solve this problem on resource-bounded models of computation. In streaming models, in which algorithms can access the input only a constant number of times and only sequentially, we show that, even with randomization, any algorithm that determines if there exists any pair of vertices with a large common neighborhood must essentially store and process the input graph off line. In sampling models, in which algorithms can only query an oracle for the common neighborhoods of specified vertex pairs, we show that any algorithm must …

Muséo-parcs et réenchantement de l’expérience muséale : le cas de la Cité des Arts et des Sciences de Valencia

2010

The museum offer undergoes at present profound transformations. Beyond the traditional structures which do not any more hesitate to use innovative museographies and to slide in the sphere of the leisure activities, it seems to develop a new sector, halfway between museums and amusement parks called museopark. The aim of this article is to analyze an example of this hybrid offer, the City of Arts and Science in Valencia (Spain), fitting very well with the edutainment logic and to understand the structuring elements and the borrowings made in of the amusement parks. After the presentation of theoretical foundations underlying the definition of experiential museums, we expose our case study, b…

Modeling the Probability of Informed Trading in the European Carbon Market

2012

We provide evidence of informed trading in the European carbon market. We adapt Easley et al.’s (1996) PIN methodology to the particularities of this market by isolating the trading activity on the two carbon offsets: European Union Allowances (EUAs) and Certified Emission Reductions (CERs). We find that the PIN regularly increases before the publication of the yearly verified-emission reports. CERs exhibit lower average PIN than EUAs. While the PIN of CERs has increased over time, together with its share in total trading activity, EUAs’ PIN has remained pretty stable. Our findings suggest that CERs must not be avoided in any decision or analysis made by researchers, regulators or traders i…

Going Public – Going Private: The Case of VC-Backed Firms

2012

We investigate the decisions of listed firms to go private once again. We start by revealing that while a significant number of firms which go public is VC-backed, an overproportional share of these VC-backed firms go private later on (they stay on the exchange for an average of 8.5 years). We interpret this very robust pattern such that IPOs of VC-backed firms are to a large extent a temporary rather than a permanent feature of the corporate governance of these firms. We investigate various potential hypotheses why VCs actually seem to be able to bring marginal firms to the exchange by relating the going-private decisions to various characteristics of the IPO market as well as to VC charact…

Physician pharmacist practice groups : consistency and feasibility in the primary healthcare system. Evaluation of an experiment in France

2022

The regulation of drug prescription by general practitioners is based on various mechanisms, but unlike other countries (Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland), it does not include practice groups between general practitioners and community pharmacists (GPMPs). This thesis analyses the coherence and, above all, the feasibility of such practice groups in our health system. The first chapter presents a macroeconomic and microeconomic analysis of the drug prescription by French general practitioners (GPs). It emphasises that it is an important target for regulatory policy because of its contribution to health expenditure but also its health impact, with prescriptions whose relevance could be i…

Patents, Competition, and Firms’ Innovation Incentives

2014

This paper presents fresh evidence on the interaction between industrial property rights (patents) and competition, and their joint effect on firms’ innovation. We use panel data of Spanish manufacturing firms for 1990–2006, as well as external information on European Patent Office and US Patent Office patent counts. We construct a new synthetic measure of competition and estimate the impact of patents on this measure at the industry level. Then, the effect of industry-wide competition and patenting on firms’ innovation is estimated at the firm level. Our results suggest that patents reduce the level of competition in the industry, whereas the effect of competition on innovation varies with…

Pulsed-Resource Dynamics Constrain the Evolution of Predator-Prey Interactions

2011

Although temporal variability in the physical environment plays a major role in population fluctuations, little is known about how it drives the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of species interactions. We studied experimentally how extrinsic resource pulses affect evolutionary and ecological dynamics between the prey bacterium Serratia marcescens and the predatory protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila. Predation increased the frequency of defensive, nonpigmented prey types, which bore competitive costs in terms of reduced maximum growth rate, most in a constant-resource environment. Furthermore, the predator densities of the pulsed-resource environment regularly fluctuated above and below …

Identifying individuality and variability in team tactics by means of statistical shape analysis and multilayer perceptrons.

2012

Abstract Offensive and defensive systems of play represent important aspects of team sports. They include the players’ positions at certain situations during a match, i.e., when players have to be on specific positions on the court. Patterns of play emerge based on the formations of the players on the court. Recognition of these patterns is important to react adequately and to adjust own strategies to the opponent. Furthermore, the ability to apply variable patterns of play seems to be promising since they make it harder for the opponent to adjust. The purpose of this study is to identify different team tactical patterns in volleyball and to analyze differences in variability. Overall 120 s…

Prove di coltivazione di Calendula (Calendula officinalis L.) in ambiente semi-arido

2008

Inside the family Asteraceae, Marigold is one of the most relevant species bearing some herbal interest. The evaluation of the bio-agronomical and yield response of the species to the field cropping conditions, especially when a low input cropping technique is applied, is the base for its full exploitation. With this objective, a long-term research activity has been started out by the DAAT (Department of Environmental and Land Agronomy) of the University of Palermo in the experimental farm “Sparacia” (Cammarata – AG – Sicily), performing observations on Marigold plants managed with a minimum recourse to external technical inputs (nor pesticides neither chemical weeding, and a light (50 kg h…
