An Exploratory Case Study of Offshore Outsourcing: Problems in Multicultural Settings
2014
Outsourcing means using factors which are external to an organization to perform its functions whereas offshore outsourcing relies on using foreign resources to perform those functions. We focus in this paper on offshore outsourcing of information systems (ISs). We have conducted an exploratory case study of outsourcing IS support services. The services have been outsourced by a supplier organization which has been based in Finland. Main parts of its customer support services have been allocated to so-called production centers, which have been located in three countries; Latvia, India, and the Philippines. We have gathered qualitative data from nine experts via theme-based interviews. The e…
Detection of behavioural patterns in Olympic male taekwondo athletes
2017
The relationship between athletes’ behaviours is relevant for developing defensive and offensive strategies. Traditionally, sequential analysis has been conducted to assess relationships between two behaviours (one considered as focal and the other as conditioned). The aim of the study was to examine Olympic taekwondo athletes’ behavioural patterns by conducting sequential analyses of tactical actions in bouts. Seventy-five male matches of the London Olympic Games in 2012 were studied to analyse tactical actions: attack (direct and indirect), counterattack (anticipatory, simultaneous and posterior), defensive (cuts, blocks and dodges), and opening actions. A sequential analysis of 2 lags (i…
Risk management in offshore outsourcing of software production using the ICT-supported unified process model: A cross-case study
2008
Successful execution of ICT-supported unified process of offshore outsourcing (ICT-SUPOO) of software development can offer various important benefits. However, ICT-SUPOO of software development is very complex and risky, and often fails. Almost no empirical studies are available on the risk factors that affect the ICT-SUPOO. The objective of this study is to investigate the key risk factors associated with ICT-SUPOO, understand how they create risks, and how the risks can be alleviated. We carry out a multiple case study from both of the vendorpsilas and clientpsilas sites, where professionals with extensive experience in managing offshore outsourcing of software development were interview…

Conservative swept volume boundary approximation
2010
We present a novel technique for approximating the boundary of a swept volume. The generator given by an input triangle mesh is rendered under all rigid transformations of a discrete trajectory. We use a special shader program that creates offset geometry of each triangle on the fly, thus guaranteeing a conservative rasterization and correct depth values. Utilizing rasterization mechanisms and the depth buffer we then get a conservative voxelization of the swept volume (SV) and can extract a triangle mesh from its surface. This mesh is simplified maintaining conservativeness as well as an error bound measured in terms of the one-sided Hausdorff distance. For this we introduce a new techniqu…
H∞ static output-feedback control design with constrained information for offshore wind turbine system
2013
Abstract This paper deals with H ∞ static output-feedback control design with constrained information for offshore wind turbines. Constrained information indicates that a special zero–nonzero structure is imposed on the static output-feedback gain matrix. A practical use of such an approach is to design a decentralized controller for a wind turbine. This will also benefit the controller in such a way that it is more tolerant to sensor failure. Furthermore, the model under consideration is obtained by using the wind turbine simulation software FAST. Sufficient conditions to design an H ∞ controller are given in terms of Linear Matrix Inequalities ( LMI s ). Simulation results are given to il…
Wave Energy Assessment along Sicilian Coastline, Based on DEIM Point Absorber
2017
The use of renewable energy sources is one of the most relevant goals to be achieved in order to match the climate protection targets. As a case study, the paper shows the current electrical energy production by sources in the Sicilian context. Among the renewable energy sources, the paper investigates the wave energy potential along the Sicilian coasts, because of the favorable climate around the island. A point absorber is present in order to exploit this source. Two scenarios are presented, with two different levels of energy production.
Comparison of different uncertainty techniques in urban stormwater quantity and quality modelling
2011
Abstract Urban drainage models are important tools used by both practitioners and scientists in the field of stormwater management. These models are often conceptual and usually require calibration using local datasets. The quantification of the uncertainty associated with the models is a must, although it is rarely practiced. The International Working Group on Data and Models, which works under the IWA/IAHR Joint Committee on Urban Drainage, has been working on the development of a framework for defining and assessing uncertainties in the field of urban drainage modelling. A part of that work is the assessment and comparison of different techniques generally used in the uncertainty assessm…
Italian incentive strategy and regulations on small wind power turbines: A critical overview
2016
Small wind power industry in Italy had its kick-start in 2009, after the Government implemented two measures introducing both the simplified regime and incentive rates for small wind power plants. In the last six years, a lot of plants and small wind turbines have been installed in Italy, especially in the South. Aim of this paper is to examine how local standards, incentive policy and regulations have affected the spread of small wind turbines in Italy. After examining national and regional legislation, an analysis of the data on the penetration of wind systems in Italy has been carried out, with particular attention to six Southern regions (Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Apulia, Sardinia…
The Effect of Friction in Passive and Active Heave Compensators of Crown Block Mounted Compensators
2012
Abstract This paper studies the effects of friction model during passive and active heave compensation of offshore drilling equipment. The main purpose of heave compensation while drilling from vessels or semi-submersible platforms is to maintain the drilling operation unaffected by the wave induced motion. The investigated system is of an existing crown mounted compensator. A model of the system is developed which includes mechanics, hydraulics and pneumatics. The passive heave compensation scheme is described including force equalising hydraulic cylinders. In this paper the detrimental effect of friction on the heave compensation performance in both passive and active heave compensation i…
