Likelihood Calculations in Paternity Testing on the Basis of DNA-Fingerprints
1990
DNA-fingerprints seem to be a powerful tool in paternity testing. But the quantification of the results in terms of likelihood and likelihood ratios is a problem, because in most cases the correct genetic model and its parameters are not known. Two approaches have been suggested to circumvent these problems. The use of band sharing rates to distinguish between pairs of relatives and pairs of unrelated individuals, and the calculation of likelihood ratios on the basis of simplifying assumptions. The first approach reduces the available genetic evidence to “phenotypic” similarities. The second one makes unjustified simplifying assumptions. These two decision strategies have to be examined wit…
USING A.R.P. PROXIMAL SURVEY TO MAP CALCIC HORIZON DEPTH IN VINEYARDS
2012
The investigation of spatial variability of soil water retention capacity and depth is essential for a correct and economical planning of water supply of a vineyard. The advantage of measuring soil electrical properties by proximal sensors is the ability to operate with mobile and non-destructive tools, quicker than the traditional soil survey. A.R.P. (Automatic Resistivity Profiling) is a mobile soil electrical resistivity (ER) mapping system conceived by Geocarta (Paris, France), and it is comprised by a couple of transmitter sprocket-wheels, which inject current within the soil, and three couples of receiver sprocket-wheels, which measure the voltage-drop at three different depths, about…
Polymer aging affects the bioavailability of microplastics-associated contaminants in sea urchin embryos
2022
Microplastics (MPs) in the marine environment undergo complex weathering factors that can affect their ability to interact with different coexisting environmental contaminants (termed here co-contaminants). In this study, the influence of artificially aging using UV on the sorption of a complex mixture of co-contaminants onto MPs was investigated in order to provide meaningful hypotheses on their individual and combined toxicities on sea urchin embryos. A mixture of artificially aged MPs (PS particles and PA microfibers) combined with 2,2′ ,4,4′ - tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47), or Cd or Cu, both alone and in a mix, were used to expose embryos of Paracentrotus lividus. The effects of pol…

Il controllo della sismica a riflessione nella elaborazione dei Fogli Geologici del Progetto CARG nella Sicilia Occidentale Seismic reflection constr…
2009
In the frame of the CARG Project, the interpretation of several seismic reflection profiles has provided new important constraints aimed at clarify the deep structural setting of the Central-Western Sicily and the related offshore fold and thrust belt. It has already been envisaged as a tectonic pile mainly made up of deep water Meso-Cenozoic carbonate units overriding a thick stack of Meso-Cenozoic carbonate platform units, detached from their crystalline basement. The data collected, constrained by wells logs, field and stratigraphic data, have improved the knowledge of a complex sector outcropping in the Corleone and Caccamo geologic sheets area. Seismic interpretation displayed the rela…
Improving Irony and Stereotype Spreaders Detection using Data Augmentation and Convolutional Neural Network
2022
In this paper we describe a deep learning model based on a Data Augmentation (DA) layer followed by a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The proposed model was developed by our team for the Profiling Irony and Stereotype Spreaders (ISSs) task proposed by the PAN 2022 organizers. As a first step, to classify an author as ISS or not (nISS), we developed a DA layer that expands each sample in the dataset provided. Using this augmented dataset we trained the CNN. Then, to submit our predictions, we apply our DA layer on the samples within the unlabeled test set too. Finally we fed our trained CNN with the augmented test set to generate our final predictions. To develop and test our model we us…
User Activity Recognition via Kinect in an Ambient Intelligence Scenario
2014
The availability of an ever-increasing kind of cheap, unobtrusive, sensing devices has stressed the need for new approaches to merge raw measurements in order to realize what is happening in the monitored environment. Ambient Intelligence (AmI) techniques exploit information about the environment state to adapt the environment itself to the users’ preferences. Even if traditional sensors allow a rough understanding of the users’ preferences, ad-hoc sensors are required to obtain a deeper comprehension of users’ habits and activities. In this paper we propose a framework to recognize users’ activities via a depth and RGB camera device, namely the Microsoft Kinect. The proposed approach takes…
Towards Partners Profiling in Human Robot Interaction Contexts
2012
Individuality is one of the most important qualities of humans. Social robots should be able to model the individuality of the human partners and to modify their behaviours accordingly. This paper proposes a profiling system for social robots to be able to learn the individuality of human partners in social contexts. Profiles are expressed in terms of of identities and preferences bound together. In particular, people’s identity is captured by the use of facial features, while preferences are extracted from the discussion between the partners. Both are bound using an Hebb network. Experiments show the feasibility and the performances of the approach presented.
Detection of Points of Interest in a Smart Campus
2019
Understanding users' habits is a critical task in order to develop advanced services, such as personalized recommendation and virtual assistance. In this work, we propose a novel approach to detect Points of Interest visited by users of a campus, by using mobility traces collected through users' smartphones. Our method takes advantage of the intentional and recurrent nature of human movements to build up mobility profiles, and combines different machine learning methods to merge sensory information with the past users' behavior. The proposed approach has been validated on a synthetic dataset and the experimental results show its effectiveness.
