Denoising of MR spectroscopy signals using total variation and iterative Gauss-Seidel gradient updates

We present a fast variational approach for denoising signals from magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Differently from the TV approaches applied to denoising of images, this is the first time to our knowledge that it has been used for the processing of free induction decay signals from single-voxel spectroscopy (SVS) acquisitions. Another novelty in this study is the direct use of the Euler Lagrange formulation coupled with Gauss Seidel gradient updates to improve the speed of iteration and reduce ringing. Results from brain MRS signals show improvement in signal to noise ratio as well as reduction in estimation error in the quantification of metabolites.

Accuracy in dynamic laser speckle: optimum size of speckles for temporal and frequency analyses

The dynamic laser-speckle phenomenon has been used as a potential tool to monitor the activity of many biological and nonbiological samples; however, a key tailoring of the experimental configuration must be taken into account to avoid wrong measurements, since the general rules addressed to speckle as information cannot be directly adopted in dynamic laser-speckle monitoring. The speckle/pixel size ratio is provided by the f-number and by the magnification of the macro lens, and attention is mainly directed toward adjusting a speckle/pixel ratio higher than 1. An increasing threat to local, native freshwater mussels (Unionida)—an ecologically important but globally alarmingly declining group— is the invasion by exotic bivalves. The Enemy Release Hypothesis predicts that introduced species should benefit from enemy-mediated competition because they are less likely to be harmed by natural enemies, such as parasites, than their native competitors. Flexible optical implementation of fractional Fourier transform processors. Applications to correlation and filtering

Abstract Recently, in the field of fractional Fourier transforms (FRT) an operation coined “fractional correlation” has been proposed and investigated experimentally. In this paper we propose a new setup for obtaining the fractional correlation, which presents several advantages from the experimental point of view. The fractional filter plane can be adjusted accurately with the help of converging beam illumination and using an adjusting device consisting of a combination of Fresnel zone plates. This longitudinal study investigated the role of parents and peers as well as of education-related goal motivation during educational transitioning in late adolescence. The sample consisted of 1520 upper secondary education students attending either academic or vocational upper secondary school in Finland. They were surveyed three times: (1) in the first year of their upper secondary education, (2) in the second year of their upper secondary education, and (3) two years later. Accurate detection and characterization of corner points using circular statistics and fuzzy clustering

Accurate detection and characterization of corner points in grey level images is considered as a pattern recognition problem. The method considers circular statistic tests to detect 2D features. A fuzzy clustering algorithm is applied to the edge orientations near the prospective corners to detect and classify them. The method is based on formulating hypotheses about the distribution of these orientations around an edge, corner or other 2-D feature. The method may provide accurate estimates of the direction of the edges that converge in a corner, along with their confidence intervals. Spatiotemporal and gender-specific parasitism in two species of gobiid fish

Parasitism is considered a major selective force in natural host populations. Infections can decrease host condition and vigour, and potentially influence, for example, host population dynamics and behavior such as mate choice. We studied parasite infections of two common marine fish species, the sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus) and the common goby (Pomatoschistus microps), in the brackish water Northern Baltic Sea. We were particularly interested in the occurrence of parasite taxa located in central sensory organs, such as eyes, potentially affecting fish behavior and mate choice. Les monnaies gauloises et romaines de l'oppidum de Bibracte

Over a century of coin finds at Bibracte, between 1868 and 2000, makes this site a major reference point for Celtic numismatics. The Catalogue raisonné of 2471 Gaulish coins and 478 Roman coins gives us an insight into the circulation of coins / coinage in this oppidum after the Roman Conquest and an idea of the level of coin usage in the Gaulish economy. The progressive emergence of coin types in archaeological contexts shows on the one hand a constant use of coins from La Tène D1, (end of the 2nd century BC), an exponential increase in the volume of coin issues up to the Roman Conquest, and a late introduction of Roman coins.
