What Is Regional in Regional Clusters? The Case of the Globally Oriented Oil and Gas Cluster in Agder, Norway

2012

This paper focuses on the question to what extent knowledge sources in regional clusters stimulate the innovation activity of cluster firms. In doing so we contribute to the literature by combining two analytical approaches: by (1) distinguishing firms dominated by different innovation modes; and (2) differentiating between inter-organizational linkages and open knowledge environments as two distinct knowledge sources. Based on data from the Agder equipment supplier industry we demonstrate that mobility of labour, local buzz and inter-organizational linkages are key regional knowledge sources, but clearly more so for some types of firms than others.

On the Assessment and Optimisation of the Processing Conditions of Tyre-Rubber Modified Bitumen

2021

The current study aims at understanding the effect of the variables associated with manufacturing rubberised bitumens in order to develop rubberised bitumen with superior mechanical properties and identify optimised processing conditions for its production. The experimental work covered extensive laboratory testing of several rubberised bitumen blends. The rubberised bitumen was manufactured using four paving grade bitumens (180/240, 160/220, 70/100, 80/100), three tyre rubber types (mechanical ground, waterjet powder, ambient ground powder), and various processing conditions (shear levels, temperatures, processing times). Characterisation of the manufactured blends included rotational visc…

More planet and less profit? The ethical dilemma of an oil producing nation

2019

Every oil producing nation is confronted with a complex and fundamental ethical dilemma. On the one hand, there are moral arguments for the nation to use the petroleum resource for the benefit of society and make it available for countries who do not have this natural resource endowment. On the other hand, there are moral arguments for not extracting and using fossil fuels because of CO2 emissions. In short, this creates tension between the need for government revenues to finance welfare benefits and the objective of preserving the environment. A complicating factor is that a nation's domestic oil and gas activities are in its nature global because the activities have a direct impact on the…

Isotopic ordering in eggshells reflects body temperatures and suggests differing thermophysiology in two Cretaceous dinosaurs

2015

International audience; Our understanding of the evolutionary transitions leading to the modern endothermic state of birds and mammals is incomplete, partly because tools available to study the thermo-physiology of extinct vertebrates are limited. Here we show that clumped isotope analysis of eggshells can be used to determine body temperatures of females during periods of ovulation. Late Cretaceous titanosaurid eggshells yield temperatures similar to large modern endo-therms. In contrast, oviraptorid eggshells yield temperatures lower than most modern endotherms but B6 °C higher than co-occurring abiogenic carbonates, implying that this taxon did not have thermoregulation comparable to mod…

An Empirical Study of Performance Appraisal and Career Opportunities

2011

Using survey data from a large international oil company, this econometric study explores the perceptions ofperformance appraisal and career opportunities on one hand, and how this is dependent on variation in propertiesand characteristics of the local working environment on the other hand. Perceptions indicate that performanceand payoff are better balanced among women than among men. Moreover, the connection between perceivedachievement and appreciation is strengthened by time of service for leaders, but not for employees innon-managerial positions. Finally, perceptions of performance appraisal and career opportunities depend oncharacteristics of the local work environment, with positive i…

DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT IN THE UPSTREAM OIL INDUSTRY

This is a study about investments in the upstream oil industry. The goal is to describe how investments that lead to oil and gas production, are made. The study of oil supply is central, because it represents 60% of the world’s primary energy supply. It is vital for energy renewables policy makers, in order to assess oil supply scenarios and adjust incentives for lower fossils consumption. It is also important for consuming countries. Previous studies have stressed the importance of market volatility for investment appraisal in the UK; irreversibility of investments; and remaining reserves as main drivers of investment and production in the UK. My study differs, since my results can be comp…

Considerations on sand control in natural gas wells

2017

Mechanism of sand production in gas wells is complex and influenced by every operation performed into the well, starting from the opening of the production interval by drilling, and continuing with completion and putting into production as well as with the exploitation regime. Sand production along with fluids from gas reservoirs creates a series of potentially dangerous and costly problems. For selecting the most appropriate methods of sand-control all the data and information related to properties of reservoir rock, the history of sand production, the potential well flow rates as well as HSE and costs need to be evaluated. The conclusion of the authors is that the best results in sand con…

A Recent Advancement: Casing while Drilling – A Viable Alternative to Conventional Drilling

2021

Mankind’s increased requirement for and dependence on energy resources, including the resources resulting from discovery and development of new hydrocarbon commercial reservoirs involves the use of new technologies such as optimization of the drilling process by reducing the non-productive time, the costs and the risks. Casing while drilling involves elimination of classical drilling string by using the casing string both for transmission to the bit of the mechanical energy and for circulation of drilling fluid into the well. Casing while drilling, constantly improving over time, has proven an efficient method to reduce risks, especially those related to the presence of a conventional…

Solids and Hydraulic Retention Time Effect on N2O Emission from Moving-Bed Membrane Bioreactors

2018

Biological nutrient removal was operated at different solids (SRT) and hydraulic retention times (HRT) in order to assess their influence on nitrous oxide (N2O) emission from a hybrid moving-bed membrane bioreactor. The observed results show that the N2O production decreased when the SRT/HRT was decreased. The maximum N2O gaseous concentration was measured in the aerobic reactor at the end of phase I, and it decreased through phases II and III. From mass balances over the reactors of the system, the aerated (aerobic and membrane) reactors were the largest producers of N2O, showing that the greater part of N2O was produced during the nitrification process.
