Cádiz en Charcas: conjeturas e indicios

2012

The brainstem efferent acoustic chiasm in pigmented and albino rats

2015

Abstract The present study examined whether structural peculiarities in the brain-efferent pathway to the organ of Corti may underlie functional differences in hearing between pigmented and albino individuals of the same mammalian species. Pigmented Brown-Norway rats and albino Wistar rats received unilateral injections of an aqueous solution of the retrograde neuronal tracer Fluorogold (FG) into the scala tympani of the cochlea to identify olivocochlear neurons (OCN) in the brainstem superior olivary complex. After five days, brains were perfusion-fixed and brainstem sections were cut and analyzed with respect to retrogradely labeled neurons. Intrinsic neurons of the lateral system were lo…

Computation of inverse functions in a model of cerebellar and reflex pathways allows to control a mobile mechanical segment.

2003

Abstract The command and control of limb movements by the cerebellar and reflex pathways are modeled by means of a circuit whose structure is deduced from functional constraints. One constraint is that fast limb movements must be accurate although they cannot be continuously controlled in closed loop by use of sensory signals. Thus, the pathways which process the motor orders must contain approximate inverse functions of the bio-mechanical functions of the limb and of the muscles. This can be achieved by means of parallel feedback loops, whose pattern turns out to be comparable to the anatomy of the cerebellar pathways. They contain neural networks able to anticipate the motor consequences …

Venezuela's humanitarian crisis, resurgence of vector-borne diseases, and implications for spillover in the region

2019

In the past 5–10 years, Venezuela has faced a severe economic crisis, precipitated by political instability and declining oil revenue. Public health provision has been affected particularly. In this Review, we assess the impact of Venezuela's health-care crisis on vector-borne diseases, and the spillover into neighbouring countries. Between 2000 and 2015, Venezuela witnessed a 359% increase in malaria cases, followed by a 71% increase in 2017 (411 586 cases) compared with 2016 (240 613). Neighbouring countries, such as Brazil, have reported an escalating trend of imported malaria cases from Venezuela, from 1538 in 2014 to 3129 in 2017. In Venezuela, active Chagas disease transmission has be…

A Paravermal Trans-Cerebellar Approach to the Posterior Fossa Tumor Causes Hypertrophic Olivary Degeneration by Dentate Nucleus Injury

2021

Background: In brain tumor surgery, injury to cerebellar connectivity pathways can induce a neurodegenerative disease called hypertrophic olivary degeneration (HOD), along with a disabling clinical syndrome. In children, cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS) is another consequence of damage to cerebello&ndash

Academia de Ciencias Fisicas, Matematicas y Naturales paziņojums ar Ernesta Foldāta piezīmi

1998

Paziņojums latviešu biologam, orhideju pētniekam Ernestam Foldātam no Venecuēlas Fizikas, matemātikas un dabaszinātņu akadēmijas par to, ka viņam piešķirta Huana Alberto Olivaresa balva bioloģijas zinātnēs.

Neuroproteomics in the auditory brainstem: candidate proteins for ultrafast and precise information processing.

2014

In the mammalian auditory brainstem, the cochlear nuclear complex (CN) and the superior olivary complex (SOC) feature structural and functional specializations for ultrafast (<1 ms) and precise information processing. Their proteome, the basis for structure and function, has been rarely analyzed so far. Here we identified and quantified the protein profiles of three major auditory brainstem regions of adult rats, the CN, the SOC, and the inferior colliculus (IC). The rest of the brain served as a reference. Via label-free quantitative mass spectrometry and 2-D DIGE/MALDI-MS, we identified 584 and 297 proteins in the plasma membrane/synaptic vesicle proteome and the cytosolic proteome, respe…
